On Thursday March 12, The Copenhagen Skatepark will hold a fundraiser to help support Project Skateistan the organization that we mentioned back in June of 2008 that is spreading peace in Afghanistan through skateboarding.
Worldfamous Trentemöller and many more music acts are supporting the project by playing for free on this evening. A lot of very talented artists among them Olafsur Eliasson has donated art for our beneficiary art auction. Famous chefs from Gasthaus4Experiment in Germany are coming to cook extraordinary food, skaters are coming from all over Europe to participate in our skatecompetition, where Eastpack has already donated 4 x 1000€ for price money that will go directly to Skateistan!

In their new book Vintage Games: An Insider Look at the History of Grand Theft Auto, Super Mario, and the Most Influential Games of All Time journalists Bill Loguidice and Matt Barton roll out the completely history of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater franchise. Gamasutra has been cool enough to preview the entire THPS section:
What Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, which has now generated $1 billion in sales across the course of the series, added was an extraordinary level of realism to the over-the-top antics that resonated with many players who were turned off by the overly competitive nature of the previous games. By making it about technique over style, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater expanded its audience to far more players than any other game of its type before.
Thanks Gamasutra, we won’t have to buy the book. Click the link for the rest of the five page story.
[Update 2:20 PM: According to a comment from Bill Loguidice the Tony Hawk Pro Skater history isn’t even in the book, it’s a bonus chapter run exclusively on Gamasutra.com Sorry for the mix up, Bill.]

Snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler and skateboarder Ryan Sheckler have joined retired soccer player Mia Hamm, basketballer Steve Nash and others on the Mission Skincare team according to a story in the Detroit Free Press.
The athletes have all signed on as advisers to Mission Skincare, along with Serena Williams, Carmelo Anthony and golfer Sergio Garcia. They’re involved in development, testing and marketing products that suit their needs, and the brand has committed to make charitable donations to the athletes’ pet causes. . . . “I loved the idea of working with people who really wanted my feedback, from me traveling around the world, being outdoors — usually in zero-degree weather,” says Bleiler. She says she influenced the size, texture and taste of the Sweet Vanilla Lip Balmer, as well as the anti-sting element of the sunscreen.
Sweet Vanilla? Yummy. Ryan says he’s rockin’ Lip Balmer™ SPF 15, “so I can combat chapped lips.”
Take the money while you can this one won’t be around for long.

Rob Meronek, the technical mind behind the Skatepark of Tampa website and online store, has just released a serious data drop on the SPoT site titled: A Detailed Analysis of Board Company Sales Over Six Years, according to his blog post on Clubmumble.
If you’re a skateboard bid’niss man, a numbers geek, or plain old skate nerd, you might find it interesting. If not, well, refer back to the post where Bob introduced me as a new member on the site – ha. This one is a listing of all the top selling board companies and a look at how they’ve performed over the last six years along with my notes/banter on each.
This is the sort of data people pay good money for, but Rob was nice enough to share it with the world for free.

After all of these years of creating very public art and design Andy Jenkins (pictured right with Russ Pope) still gets nervous when people see his new work for the first time. “I get really self-conscious about my work,” he says. “Especially when my family says anything. If they walk into the studio and they don’t say anything and they’re I just looking over my shoulder I go, Ah, man, forget it. They have to say just the right think or I’ll throw the piece away.”

The Berrics really elevated the whole game of skate to a marketing bonanza for everyone. Quiksilver and Shredordie.com seem to be the first (and certainly not last) to copy-capitalize with a video contest called Race To S.K.A.T.E. Here’s how it works:
Today the Race to S.K.A.T.E. begins. We will upload a video of Kyle Leeper doing five tricks on ShredOrDie.com at 4PM PST/7PM EST. The first five people to upload a video to Shred or Die of themselves doing those five tricks wins. First place will get an autographed Kyle Leeper deck, Autographed Beastie Boys album, and Quiksilver backpack full of Quiksilver clothes.
This definitely puts an interesting speed and technology twist on the game and could result in revealing the next Rodney Mullen. Or, it may just prove who has the largest digital library of themselves doing skate tricks. Oh, did we just give away the way to win?

Entrepreneur.com, not exactly known for its hard hitting business journalism, just profiled RVCA and founder PM Tenore. And despite the fashion industry chaos going on all around him, Tenore and his Costa Mesa fashion house seem to be doing just fine.
Its footprint may be growing, but it’s not seeking to grow out of its niche. “I like where we are right now: not too big and not too small. But we also want to try to be everywhere,” Tenore says. As part of its growth strategy, no additional accounts will be added to RVCA’s distribution in 2009. At present, the brand is sold in 600 accounts in the U.S. and distributed in 28 countries world wide.
We’ve from several small brands who are doing well. Guess its nice when the big guys are taking all the hits.
