After all of these years of creating very public art and design Andy Jenkins (pictured right with Russ Pope) still gets nervous when people see his new work for the first time. “I get really self-conscious about my work,” he says. “Especially when my family says anything. If they walk into the studio and they don’t say anything and they’re I just looking over my shoulder I go, Ah, man, forget it. They have to say just the right think or I’ll throw the piece away.”

Follow the jump for the rest of the story and photos:

Of all the art from Russ Pope, Chris Pastras, Chris Yorrick, and Mike Meyers, Jenkins’ are the most subtle and polished.

Created in a two week period in November 2008 when Jenkins says he “went crazy and stayed in his studio,” the paintings are a progression of what he has been doing for a long time; most of it relating to what he calls “post consumer guilt.”

They are beautifully detailed yet minimal collages of papers both personal and found (receipts, notes, hymnal pages, old pieces of blank paper) that Jenkins obsessively collects.

“I have this thing where I can’t throw anything away,” he explains. “I have boxes and boxes of stuff and then I feel like I need to use them somehow and I use them in these multi-medium pieces. Sometimes there are drawings, sometimes not. Or, I’ll paint on them or paint over them. Some of my paintings will have 10 layers of stuff.”

When we mentioned that the pieces seemed peaceful and balanced Jenkins was happy. “That’s great,” he said. “That’s kind of how I feel in my life right now with my family and being a dad.”

Russ Pope was the energy behind bringing Spare Change together at Hibbleton Gallery, according to Jesse LaTour, one of the gallery’s six co-owners. “Russ Pope helped us as a gallery put it together and organize it and it’s really a big deal for us,” LaTour said. “We haven’t had artists of this calibre yet. We’re kind of a new gallery, we have a lot of energy and young artists. It’s cool to bring people like this in.”

Spare Change is well worth a trip into the heart of Orange County. It runs until March 29, 2009 at The Hillbleton Gallery 112 W. Wilshire Ave, Fullerton, California.
