by The Editors on March 4, 2011

There have been a few claims at the elusive surf kickflip, but if this video is real (and it appears to be) then on Friday morning, March 4, 2011, Zoltan Torkos did it. Which is good, because he’s been trying them for a while now.

Cori Schumacher Ain’t Going To Surf China

by The Editors on March 3, 2011

Dsc 28251-300X199Current ASP Women’s World Longboarding champ Cori Schumacher says she’ll boycott the 2011 tour, according to a story on Surfer Magazine’s website.

“I have deep political and personal reservations with being a part of any sort of benefit to a country that actively engages in human rights violations,” Schumacher said. . . The current schedule for the Women’s Longboard Tour includes two stops, one in France and the other in China. Schumacher has stated that she will not surf in either event.

A very stand up position to take considering that the entire surf industry makes their products in China, a country that has recently threatened to send foreign journalists home if they try to report on pro-democracy demonstrations.

No Eddie Aikau This Winter

by The Editors on February 28, 2011

   Id-34-4-Quik Eddie 2011 Action Bb 0333

The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau waiting period officially ended today, February 28, 2011, according to a post on the Mountain And Wave.

The event was poised to run on January 20 this year as thousands of spectators joined competitors at Waimea’s hallowed shoreline, but inconsistent 20-foot surf resulted in a “No Go”. That call drew overwhelming support of the event’s uncompromising standards. ‘The Eddie’ was last held in December of 2009. Since its inception in the winter of 1984/85, it has only been held eight times.

Guess 2010-11 was not the winter for big wave contests (The Jay at Mavericks window closed today as well). Next Eddy opening ceremony: December 1, 2011.

Yesterday, on Steve Job’s 56th birthday, Apple announced an updated line of Macbook Pro computers. And what did they feature front and center? A photo of Billabong’s Laurie Towner charging Teahupoo. Apparently, someone at Apple has their priorities straight.
