Active Pulls In The Reigns In Chula Vista

by The Editors on March 5, 2009

ActiveOver the past few days we’ve been getting repeated reports of Active’s plans to close several of their 29 Southern California retail locations. The company is closing its Chula Vista store this week.

Active President Shane Wallace hinted at this in a January profile in Women’s Wear Daily saying that he wouldn’t rule out store closings, if needed. “We’ll do what makes sense for our business,” he said.

Students Strike HS Skateboarding Ban

by The Editors on March 5, 2009

When the administration of Las Cruces, New Mexico’s Mayfield High School decided to ban skateboarding at the high school after a ninth-grade student injured after being hit in the face with a skateboard, the students decided to stage a protest.

Nearly 30 students joined at Mayfield’s “Skateboarding Circle” in front of the school this morning in protest and several had their boards confiscated as a result. . . Two hours later, students and administrators agreed to discuss in April a cooperative way to lift the ban, and protesters — partially satisfied — returned to their classes.

Way to stick it to the man.

California Town Votes To Fingerprint Skaters

by The Editors on March 4, 2009

Skate.JpgLast night, the city of Poway, California voted in favor of a fingerprinting system that will allow skateboarders to use the city’s skatepark.

Park users who break the house rules or indulge in roughhousing, bullying or vandalism will have their thumbprint voided. “So the next time they put their thumb in (the thumb pad), it will not work,” says Poway City Councilman Jim Cunningham. “Then they will contact someone and find out why.”To critics who may see all this as somewhat Orwellian, Cunningham has this comeback “We’re not Big Brother. The thumbprints are not going to Homeland Security. They’re being used specifically for this particular facility, and we want people to enjoy it.”

This is how it all starts. . .

Billabong Eighth Biggest Brand in Australia

by The Editors on March 4, 2009

Billabong-LogAccording to a list of Australia’s biggest brands compiled by Interbrand, Billabong is number eight. They are right after ANZ Bank and ahead of St. George. Sadly, out of the top 20 Australian companies we only recognized four. Since we’ve heard of Telstra, that makes Billabong the number two Australian brand in the Boardistan rankings.

Zumiez Same Store Comps Down Again

by The Editors on March 4, 2009

Not that we want to continue on the bad news program, but Zumiez same store sales for the month of February were down, according to a press release on Market Watch:

Zumiez Inc. . . .announced the company’s comparable store sales decreased 13.4% for the four-week period ended February 28, 2009, versus a comparable store sales decrease of 2.6% in the year ago period ended March 1, 2008. Total net sales for the four-week period ended February 28, 2009 increased 0.2% to approximately $23.1 million, compared to approximately $23.1 million for the four-week period ended March 1, 2008.

Turns out people are only buying what they need these days. And apparently, they don’t need T-shirts with advertising all over them. To hear someone read the above quote please call (585) 295-6795.

Battle At The Berrics Finals

by The Editors on March 2, 2009

Berrics09 7A

The Finals videos are now up at the Berrics. Check them out first. And then come back here and check out our photos. It was a mind-blowing night of skateboarding, not to mention the best contest we’ve ever been too.

If we hadn’t been so excited about all of it things probably would have gone a little smoother for us. But we were and they didn’t.

Dew Tour Slims Down

by The Editors on March 2, 2009

Sbj200903020501-01.JpgDew Tour President Wade Martin says the tour may have lost two sponsors (Right Guard and Panasonic), and slimmed down two of the events, but it’s not because of the economy. No, he meant to do this, according to a story in Sports Business Journal.

[he] said the decision to contract the size of two tour stops had less to do with the economy than with a strategic plan to move into top U.S. markets and cater to fans of skateboarding and BMX, which attract different audiences, with events of their own. He said the tour will save 20 percent per event and 5 to 10 percent over the entire season by doing just a skateboard or BMX event, as opposed to an event with both sports. . . . “Yes, we’ll save some money,” Martin added, “but this is largely about getting into top 10 markets, showcasing the sports individually, and bringing them to a new fan base, which we see growing interest in the tour when we tap into new markets.”

If they turned all the summer events into skateboard only events it would be fine with us.
