Michael Marckx New VonZipper Global GM

by The Editors on September 19, 2017

Billabong International has named Michael Marckx, the former CEO of Spy, as their new global general manager for the VonZipper brand.

“Michael brings a unique combination of left- and right-brained freakiness that is the kind of disciplined yet spontaneous energy the VZ brand will thrives with,” said VonZipper founder Greg “GT” Tomlinson. “Not only are we going to expand the VZ product offering, our brand is going to stand out in fun ways just as it did originally, as we have done since rocking the category in 2000.”

Seems like a great fit for everyone. For the official word from VonZipper, please follow the jump.

Finally A Hermès Skateboard

by The Editors on August 17, 2017

. . . you know, to go with your Hermès Apple Watch.

As befitting a brand that specialises in discreet, exceptionally expensive subversion, French fashion house Hermès has unveiled a collection of skateboards and longboards. In the same vein as Chanel’s snowboard and Saint Laurent’s stiletto-roller skates (although, admittedly, the latter are just for show), the Hermès skateboard takes an item straight from the street and gives it a luxury makeover.

And it only costs $3,000. Thanks we’d rather roll a Penny.

Agenda Adds Live Music To The Mix

by The Editors on July 18, 2017

We didn’t attend Agenda. In fact, we haven’t been to one of the shows for what seems like years now (2014 it seems), but truth up, no one called to say they missed us so guess we’re all good. Luckily, LA Weekly went this year so we got the word on this year’s summer Agenda show from an outside source. Which is a good thing every once in a while.

Here’s a sample of what LA Weekly’s Ivan Fernandez had to share:

The layout was such that everyone had to walk through the pop-up shops area first before arriving to either music stage. That’s probably why most of the people arriving to watch the Beat Junkies were dressed in new shirts branded with cartoon characters, or sporting new pairs of limited-edition kicks imported from Japan, or strapped with giant novelty backpacks large enough to carry three average-sized toddlers.

Kind of bummed we missed Tyler. . . again, but don’t think we missed much else. Click the link for the rest.

Built To Fail: A Streetwear Story

by The Editors on June 16, 2017

No shock to anyone really, but we’ve never understood the “streetwear” thing. We know what it’s like to desire every single piece of kit we’d see on our favorite skaters, surfers, and snowboarders, but we never got our heads around the fetishization of those clothes by people who seemed to be more into the fashion (and we mean that in an East Coast/NYC way) than the skateboarding. We’re hoping Bobby Hundreds‘ new documentary Built To Fail: A Street Wear Story will finally enlighten us.

BUILT TO FAIL: A STREETWEAR STORY takes you through the history of streetwear, including the subculture of LA’s surf & skate scene, the punk rock scene, and the rise of graffiti street art out of NY. The film features interviews with Tommy Hilfiger, Russell Simmons, A$AP Rocky, Benny Gold, and LA-based designers such as Eli Bonerz (X-Large), “Bobby Tribal” Ruiz (Tribal), and Rick Klotz (Freshjive).

Built To Fail premiere’s this Saturday, June 17, 2017 at the Los Angeles Film Festival at 8:35pm at the ArcLight Santa Monica. For more info click the link.

Nixon’s Greek Surf Mission

by The Editors on June 5, 2017

To anyone who’s spent a day staring out the window of a Minoan Line ferry looking for surf in the Agean Sea this vid will seem like fiction. Yes, we spotted wave with potential off the coast of Delos, one fall during a storm, but nothing like what Nixon surfers Marlon Lipke, Yannick De Jager and Gony Zubizarreta found on this trip.

Chances to score are always very low considering the consistency of swells and the difficulty to predict conditions. Timing is key, local connexions are priceless. All they needed was a call: a friend and local shaper guaranteed them that the conditions displayed on the weather forecast would turn the coast into an idyllic playground, and it did.

Guess so. This whole edit was snagged in one day, and when the day was done, so was the surf.

Billabong Looks To Nordies For CFO

by The Editors on June 1, 2017

Over the past decade Billabong has had nothing but trouble running their own retail stores. Not to rehash it all, but they’ve bought retailers and online retailers and partnered with other retailers all without ever gaining traction or experiencing any real success. But they’re planning to fix all that with the hire of Jim Howell as chief financial officer of the company.

Mr Howell has spent the last 10 years leading the finance and treasury division at Nordstrom, one of the largest retailers in the United States, where he oversaw significant cost management improvements, capital management and growth initiatives. . . He played a key role in the implementation of Nordstrom’s highly successful omni- channel retailing strategy, which has demonstrated consistent best in class financial performance.

Sounds like they have the right guy for the job. We hope Mr. Howell is up for a challenge. He starts at the Bong on June 12, 2017, and will be based in California. For the official word from Billabong, please follow the jump.
