Converse Launches The Kenny Anderson KA-One

by The Editors on June 15, 2011

To promote the launch of his new KA-One shoe from Converse Kenny Anderson kickflipped into a nose manual in LA and didn’t stop until he got to Las Vegas, or at least that’s the hook to the film LA to Vegas.

We can say this: Kenny spent like a year on his front wheels for this one (even ding some skateboard towing behind a bus to show how tough he is). Watch and you’ll see what we mean. . . For more info on how Converse is launching this shoe follow the jump. [click to continue…]

LA Man Tows Into The Hospital

by The Editors on May 23, 2011

Edward Culhane, 35, should be old enough to know better, but that didn’t stop him from towing behind a car on his skateboard Saturday afternoon, May 21, 2011 in Santa Clarita, California. He ended up with a “serious head injury” according to the LA Times and a trip to the hospital.

He was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Medical Center and was reportedly in critical condition. . . Ryan Howell, 33, [the driver] was booked on suspicion of felony driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, deputies said.

Sadly, Culhane is now just one more of story on this growing list of people who didn’t know. Hopefully, he will recover.

[Update: Culhane, has reportedly died (May 24, 2011) from his injuries, according to a story on The Signal}

Eight-year-old Skater Towed Into Hospital

by The Editors on September 2, 2010

As you well know we hate reading stories like this one from The Herald-Mail:

An 8-year-old boy was in critical condition Wednesday night at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., after a skateboard accident at 440 N. Prospect St. earlier in the day, according to a Hagerstown Police Department spokesman. . . The accident occurred at about 5:45 p.m., when three juveniles were hanging onto a Jeep while riding skateboards, Sgt. Chad Woodring said late Wednesday. . . The 8-year-old boy lost his balance, and it is believed he was struck by the Jeep, Woodring said.

We also flinch every time we see pros towing into stuff while skateboarding in movies like Emerica’s Stay Gold and Nike Skateboarding’s Debacle. Sure, skateboarding is dangerous, but still . . .

Zak’s Boardroom Owner On Life Support

by The Editors on June 3, 2010

John “Zak” Kaercher, 29, the owner of Anchorage, Alaska’s Zak’s Boardroom and Phaze One indoor skatepark is currently on life support and “brain dead” after falling from his skateboard Tuesday night while reportedly towing on a truck, according to a story in the Anchorage Daily News.

. . . police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said. Kaercher was being towed behind a Toyota Tacoma when he lost control and hit his head on the pavement, then began convulsing, Parker said.

Zak’s father Dale Kaercher is reportedly disputing the police report saying that his son simply lost his balance while skateboarding home from work. Our thoughts are with Kaercher’s family, friends, and the entire Anchorage skate and snow community.

Another Skater Tows Into Critical Condition

by The Editors on April 5, 2010

The Tornoto Sun calls it a “bizarre accident” but as anyone who follows skateboarding knows, towing behind a car and getting seriously wrecked or killed is really not bizarre at all. It is cliché.

Niagara Regional Police said the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Friday on Greenlane Rd., east of Ontario St., in Lincoln, Ont. . . A 27-year-old Beamsville man was on a skateboard, being towed behind a car driven by a 41-year-old man, police said. . . The boarder, fell and suffered a serious head injury. . . He was taken to McMaster Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Towing kills. It’s a fact. If you don’t believe, click this link.
