Zak’s Boardroom Owner On Life Support

by The Editors on June 3, 2010

John “Zak” Kaercher, 29, the owner of Anchorage, Alaska’s Zak’s Boardroom and Phaze One indoor skatepark is currently on life support and “brain dead” after falling from his skateboard Tuesday night while reportedly towing on a truck, according to a story in the Anchorage Daily News.

. . . police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said. Kaercher was being towed behind a Toyota Tacoma when he lost control and hit his head on the pavement, then began convulsing, Parker said.

Zak’s father Dale Kaercher is reportedly disputing the police report saying that his son simply lost his balance while skateboarding home from work. Our thoughts are with Kaercher’s family, friends, and the entire Anchorage skate and snow community.

Sad…but what the fuck – after all the stories of people getting killed, if the guy didn’t know by now that getting towed behind a vehicle is dangerous he was bound to do himself in one way or another anyway.

Zak was the best kind of person and he will be missed. As far as his intellect is concerned; He had Fine Arts and Business Degrees, a Shop and a Skate Park, and he got to do what he loved to do (skate and snow board) every day. We should all be so smart. What happened to him was a tragic accident. You fall wrong, and lights out. Could have happened to anyone who rides any kind of board at anytime. We know it, and skate not in spite of it, but because of it.

Hey – I’m sure Zak was a great guy. That being said, there are no less than THREE stories on the front page of Boardistan RIGHT NOW about skaters seriously injuring themselves or dying from towing on cars. And if you looked back over the past year or two, there are probably a dozen more.

I would like to think that as a shop owner, Zak would have been the one to tell local kids not to tow behind cars.

Hate on me all you want. Not gonna change what should be obvious to everyone by now: towing or hanging on to cars is dumb, dangerous and deadly.

I wonder if he was wearing a helmet? It seems that a lot of people looked up to him and he should have set a good example of safety…

This is a horrible and senseless tradgedy. I don’t know Zak personally but I have been in the store, met him and supported his business. I am a snowboarder (70 days/season) and do downhill mtn. biking, I am 60 years old and a health care practitioner.

While these incidents are almost always preventable, people still make bad choices sometimes. A helmet has saved my head and probably my life at least 3 times, twice on snow, once on pavement.

PLEASE, ALL OF YOU, CONSIDER WEARING A HELMET. Bones will heal (I know, I have broken more than a couple), your brain will not.

My thoughts and sympathy to Zaks family and friends. RIP Zak.
