Tony Hawk Removes Name From Foundation

by The Editors on July 1, 2020

Tony Hawk has officially removed his name from the skatepark building foundation he founded two decades ago, and renamed it The Skatepark Project. Here’s how Tony spins it:

“When the foundation was established nearly 20 years ago, my goal was to highlight the need for public skateparks in underserved communities, and to attract resources to those projects,” said Tony Hawk. “This name change prioritizes our mission, and still allows me to continue my role as President of the Board. The foundation (and its funding) was never about me, it has always been about creating skateparks in challenged areas.”

While we liked it being the Tony Hawk Foundation, we totally understand the change. And hey, it might just open the door up for a new title sponsor, right?

Hawk Foundation Expands Built to Play

by The Editors on September 5, 2018

Last year the Tony Hawk Foundation’s  Built To Play skateboard program resulted in $1.5-million in construction funding for six skateparks in Southeast Michigan and Western New York, according to the foundation. Now they have the opportunity for more communities to apply for matching funds up to $250,000 to build free, public skateparks that serve low-income areas. Here’s how it works:

Eligible projects include new skateparks, replacement of temporary ramp skateparks, or completing skateparks that were originally built in phases. . . The Built To Play Skatepark Program is a partnership between the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, which serves communities in sixteen counties in Southeast Michigan and Western New York, and the Tony Hawk Foundation, which has helped create 552 skateparks across the U.S. The program offers matching grants to build skateparks in the RCWJRF service area.

Let The Tony Hawk Foundation Help

by The Editors on December 12, 2016

Now is the time to turn in your application for a skatepark building grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation. The Foundation only accepts applications from communities twice a year. The current application period is live on the foundation’s Web site and will be open until January 16, 2017.

THF funding won’t pay for the whole park, but as many cities have found out, getting a Tony Hawk Foundation grant really helps jumpstart fundraising.

“The value of winning the Tony Hawk Foundation Grant cannot be measured by sheer numbers,” said Sarah Anderson, who led the Nyack, New York public skatepark to its grand opening in 2015. “The esteemed THF grant not only filled the skatepark coffer, it legitimized the project in the eyes of the public and activated donors, both public and private, to carry us forward to the finish line.”
