Vans Builds Brooklyn Party Palace

by The Editors on October 7, 2010

Ny-An541A Vans G 20101006182904When Vans opens it’s newest promotional space inside a Brooklyn, New York warehouse it will not be to sell shoes to the general public. No. The 24,000 square foot warehouse will be used by Vans to host parties, music shows, art exhibits and skate demos, according to a Conor Daugherty story in the Wall Street Journal.

The “House of Vans,” as executives at the Orange County, Calif., company have dubbed the park on Franklin Street, a few blocks from Greenpoint Avenue, is part of a broader strategy to beef up Vans’s presence in New York and the East Coast. . . “Brooklyn is one of the best Vans strongholds outside of California,” says Doug Palladini, Vans vice president of marketing. “As big as Vans has become, we’re still really only known in a few key spots outside of California.” . . But while “you can’t just show up,” Mr. Palladini said there will be occasional chances—a special event through a local skate shop, for instance—for outsiders to get inside the park and roll around. He declined to say how much the company is spending on the facility.

NYC party space rental is expensive. Might as well just own it.

Vans Launches Triple Crown iPhone App

by The Editors on November 23, 2009

How great would it be to watch the entire Hawaiian Triple Crown of Surfing on your iPhone? Great right? Live video streaming, live scores, photos, surf reports, news, all right there on one dashboard. It would be amazing. And the new Vans Triple Crown of Surfing app (available in the iTunes store today for 99 cents) does all of that with one catch: you must be connected to a WIFI network.

Img 0003-1The app features an opening screen with the three Triple Crown of Surfing event posters. Clicking one one takes you to a page with a nav bar along the bottom that features links to: News, Live Webcast, Results, Video, Photos, and a Surf Report. All of the menu items work as promised. The news section has abbreviated versions of event press releases, the Live Webcast hooks a slightly jaggy, lower resolution version of the live video on the web, the results are there, the video section includes heat-by-heat breakdowns of all the action, and the photos made us feel like we were almost there live. Being able to view all this content on an iPhone is amazing as long as you’re on a WIFI network.

Follow the jump for the rest of the review and full size screen grabs. . .

The Vans Off The Wall Book

by The Editors on March 25, 2009

VansotwFilmmaker Jared Eberhardt once told us that there are guys of a certain age in this industry who, no matter how hard they try, always end up wearing Vans shoes. They show up at weddings, funerals, and baptisms in suits. . . but on their feet it’s Vans.

Many have had access to ass-loads of free shoes over the years but they always end up throwing on a pair of Vans on their way out of the house. The Vans Off The Wall book seems built especially for them, errr, or us.

Vans Off The Wall tells the multi-generational story of the community that encompasses boards, bikes, art, music, and street culture, as well as the iconic shoes keeping it all together. With oral histories from Tony Alva, Joel Tudor, Steve Caballero, John Cardiel, Geoff Rowley, and others Vans: Off The Wall provides an intimate visually stunning account of how the company had changed the face of pop culture since its founding in 1966.

Self-promotional? Yes. Written by Vans Marketing VP Doug Palladini? Yep, but we’re not going to let either of those things quell our enthusiasm. That’s how much we’re looking forward to it. Vans says the book drops on June 1, 2009 but Amazon says they’re shipping May 1.

Faux Vans Seized In Philippines Raid

by The Editors on October 7, 2008

Nearly 3,000 pairs of “fake Vans shoes” were seized by the Philippines’ National Bureau of Investigation in Pasay City on Monday according to a story on Inquirer.net.

Raided were the sales outlet of Wintelo Merchandising located at Stall S-23, Bagong Milenyo Wholesale Center, F.B. Harrison Street, Pasay City. . . . Agents of the NBI Intellectual Property Rights Division also swooped down on the establishment’s stockrooms located at Unit B-43, Bagong Milenyo Wholesale Center; and at the 3rd Floor, LEY Warehouse, Russel Avenue, also in Pasay City.

Sounds like someone missed a bribe payment.

The Happy New 2022 News Lister

by The Editors on January 3, 2022

It’s a New Year. Time to bury those old habits, get out the list, and start working toward the new you in 2022. Or, just grab another Indian Summer Latte and scroll through this list of stories that you should have read last year. We’d put them in order of importance, but that would take way too much time and it would eliminate the joy you’ll find discovering a story you didn’t know you wanted to read. Take it away.

Credits World Premiere April 21, 2020

by The Editors on April 21, 2020

Vans new skateboarding film Credits premieres live today (April 21, 2020) on Vans Youtube channel. The film, directed by skateboarder and filmmaker Shari White features an all-women cast including Una Farrar, Breana Geering, and Fabiana Delfino.

Credits marks an important milestone for the women’s skateboarding community, exposing a title that in jest challenges the idea that women have often only been showcased in the “credits” section of skate videos. Here, in stark contrast to the former status quo, Una, Breana and Fabiana emerge, gracing the screen with full, complete parts in their own major video. . . “Everyone had the opportunity to film their best skating over the past year, with their homies cheering them on,” film director White said of the project. “That is what skateboarding is all about! The laughter and friendship, along with the battles—I hope viewers get a sense of that feeling.”

Burton Expanding Into Live Entertainment

by The Editors on January 17, 2019

Following on the heels of House of Vans and Apple’s “Town Squares” concept comes Burton Snowboards hopes to create an entertainment hub in a new space that has become available at its global headquarters in Burtonton, Vermont, according to a story in Seven Days Vermont.

Burton Snowboards wants to repurpose warehouse space at its global headquarters in Burlington for an entertainment hub anchored by an 8,000-square-foot concert venue. . . Justin Worthley, the company’s senior vice president of human resources, envisions food and beer options that would complement the band space and turn the South End campus into a destination for visitors.

Beer is always important. Lots and lots of beer. Because drunk people are the best. Sadly, Burton will first have to get the zoning changed, as music venues are only allowed on Burlington’s Pine Street and must be under 5,000 square feet. Party on, Burlington.

2017 Skateboarding Hall Of Fame Inductees

by The Editors on March 16, 2017

On May 12, 2017 Bob Mohr, Greg Weaver, Kim Cespedes, Vicki Vikers, Russ Howell, Shogo Kubo, Mike McGill, Eric Dressen, and Daewon Song are getting inducted into the International Skateboarding Hall of Fame and you can be there to see it. The ISHOF presentation, held at City National Grove of Anaheim, will be open to the public for the first time this year. . .

. . . so fans can honor their favorite skateboarding legends, watch them be inducted into the hall of fame, and even mingle with VIPs in the action sports industry. The night will include a happy hour, VIP meet-and-greet, VIP dinner and awards ceremony, with a musical performance by legendary 80’s skateboarder, Ray Barbee. All proceeds benefit the not-for-profit efforts of the Skateboarding Hall of Fame and the Go Skateboarding Foundation.

That Warren Bolster Skateboarder Magazine cover of Greg Weaver carving a pool barefoot is so hardwired into our adolescent brains that it’s impossible to see his name without drifting off on a wave of stoke. . . . For tickets to the Skateboarding Hall of Fame, please visit: https://shof2017.eventbrite.com.
