Burton Snowboards Under Hacker Attack

by The Editors on February 24, 2023

Burton Snowboards, the largest snowboard company in the world, has been under what local news station is calling a “cyber attack” since February 14, 2023, according to story on MyNBC5.com.

If you’re looking to buy some winter gear or a snowboard from Burton, it might take some time. . . The well-known winter gear Vermont company has been dealing with a major cyberattack since Feb. 14, impacting their abilities to process orders and refunds online.

Currently, there is no way to order products from the Burton website. Guess that’s one of the downsides of cutting out independent retailers and going direct. They still have 56 company stores serving the world, however, so that’s good. For all the details Burton has this posted on their website.

Burton For Sale? Donna Says “Fuck you!”

by The Editors on August 18, 2022

Bloomberg, a company known for running with pretty much any business rumor they blindly stumble into, announced yesterday (August 17, 2022) that Burton Snowboards was looking for a buyer with the following: “The owners of snowboard gear manufacturer Burton are exploring a sale that could value the family-run business at as much as $800 million, people with knowledge of the matter said.”

Oddly, it appears that people with knowledge of the matter may have been a bit mistaken with their information as Burton Snowboards Donna Carpenter imediately set the record straight on IG with the following.

Since the beginning of owning this company, there’s always been rumors about us selling. So many that one year we made t-shirts that said, “Not for sale!” A recent report came out that we’re for sale. It’s 100% bullshit. It was for a nice price, but as I’ve always said, we are family-owned and will remain family-owned.

Wanting to know how much someone would pay for your company and wanting to sell it are often two different things. Not saying anyone was looking around for valuations, but Donna’s message seems pretty clear. That said, with the current state of the world (and weather), it might not be the worst time to take some money from the private equity clowns. Glad to see that isn’t happening just yet.

Burton Spreads The Shred Love

by The Editors on June 10, 2022

With Culture Shifters 2022 at Aspen/Snowmass Burton Snowboards is spreading the inclusivity of snowboarding with the help of a few friends and influencers.

Building off the success of last year’s Culture Shifters, @Zeb Powell, Selema Masekela and the #BurtonTeam assembled a new group of legendary athletes, musicians, artists, and cultural icons to celebrate their love for snowboarding and its community.

Looks like a pretty good trip all around. But one question: what happened to all that Gary Rogers footie?

Burton Questioned On Human Rights In China

by The Editors on January 22, 2022

The BBC questioned Burton Snowboards China CEO Craig Smith on why the company continues doing business in Xinjiang, China in spite of reports of human rights violations a.k.a. genocide in the region.

Human rights groups believe China has detained more than one million members of the Uyghur minority community against their will over the past few years in a large network of what the state calls “re-education camps”, and sentenced hundreds of thousands to prison terms.

Obviously, China is big business and that is the reason Burton, Tesla, and Intel and many other global brands are there. For his part Smith said that human rights are not his area of “expertise.” A nervous, stumbling interview for Smith and a serious problem for Burton and many other companies as well. But profits do come first. It’s only business afterall.

Burton Sticks A Final Fork In The US Open

by The Editors on October 12, 2021

Good-bye Burton US Open of Snowboarding. Sure, it limped along for eight years in Colorado. But we all know the Open died in 2013 when, after 30 rad years at Stratton Mountain, Vermont, it moved to the middle of the country. Now, according to a press release from Burton Snowboards, the US Open of Snowboarding is finally and officially done for good.

What will rise in its place? Who knows. But we do know that it will be called — The Burton Mystery Series. With a nod to the Craig Kelly Mystery Air, this new series will apparently be a collection of “global grassroots” marketing efforts eventually culminating sometime in the future at a big Mystery event that is not limited by the United States of America.

Burton’s vision is to build up the Mystery Series into a global series of snowboarding events that welcomes all levels of riders. Then, down the road, the ultimate goal is to host a pinnacle Burton Mystery event that includes elements from the global grassroots events and features the world’s best riders. Unlike the Burton U·S·Open which was always held in the United States, this final, pinnacle event would ideally be hosted in a different country each time, opening up the new event series to more international riders. . . “One of the major goals of the Mystery Series in the years to come is to get back to the roots of what events like the original Opens were all about – the idea that a young unknown rider could break into snowboarding through Burton events,” said Donna Carpenter, owner of Burton. “With all the passionate people working to build the new Mystery Series, Burton will continue its long legacy of hosting the greatest snowboard events in the world.”

So, RIP US Open of Snowboarding. It was really fun while it lasted. We will always remember bombing those hardwood Vermont forests hot on the tail of Jake Carpenter, laughing till we cried trying to untangle ourselves from those pesky Beech trees. Here’s the Queen of the US Open’s take on all the feels.

Burton Opens Company Store In Denver

by The Editors on December 2, 2020

Burton Snowboard’s new 6,500 square foot retail store in Denver, Colorado puts the company right where it will want to be when this whole COVID retail dilemma is over. The new shop is located at 2649 Walnut Street in the “RiNo Arts District.”

“We’ve been carefully planning and building our Denver store for years now, and it was so exciting to finally open our doors to the Colorado community just in time for the holidays,” said John Lacy, CEO of Burton. “We have a number of protocols in place to help our customers shop safely at the Denver store, including reduced store occupancy, as well as social-distance friendly services like curbside pick-up and phone orders. With Colorado resorts beginning to open for the winter season, our Denver Hub will be a convenient new place to pick up gear, then head to the mountains for some fresh air, and hopefully plenty of fresh snow.”

But it’s more than a retails store. The location also features a wholesale showroom, kitchen and multi-purpose rooftop penthouse. You know, for 2024 makeout parties. For the official word from Burton, please follow the jump.

Jake Burton’s Best Business Suit

by The Editors on November 16, 2020

Jake Burton Carpenter’s final personal project was called Mine 77. With it he reportedly got to build, design, and create products for himself without thinking about the market, or Burton’s customers, or anything else that gets in the way of personal creativity. At least that’s the brand story.

Burton just dropped the latest collection (in commemoration of Jake) and it includes this rocket Gore-Tex 11-Pocket Coverall. Here’s what Timi Carpenter says about it:

We pulled out all the stops – Gore-Tex fabric, strategic durability patches, and a long list of features. Every detail has a purpose — that was always a big thing with my dad. He also loved pockets and this one has a shitload of them. 11 to be exact including one that’s insulated to protect you phone. Some pockets have magnetic closures for easy access while others are zipped for locking down your valuables.

Pull this on over a base layer and you’re good to go for all day powder blasting. No snow down the butt, no belly gap. Just all over function, warmth, and steez. Click the link to buy one before they’re gone (smalls and mediums are already sold out).

Burton Cancels 2021 US Open

by The Editors on May 26, 2020

Thanks to the old COVID-19 Burton is out of their US Open Snowboarding Championships contract with Vail Resorts after cancelling the 2021 event. Not a big surprise seeing as the event was dragged through the press as being one of the alleged hotspots responsible for spreading the virus to Mexico City. Sadly, it brings to a close the longest running snowboarding event in history. It’s been held every year since 1983.

“This was a difficult call to make since we’re so many months away from the next Burton U.S. Open, and we’re not sure what will be happening with the pandemic nine months from now,” said Burton CEO John Lacy. “After playing out multiple options for the 2021 event, we realized there is too much at stake due to the potential public health risk and the financial risk for Burton to invest millions in an event that could end up being cancelled.”

With so many events being cancelled we’re almost getting immune to the pain, but this is definitely one of the saddest. For the official word from Burton, please follow the jump.
