This didn’t take long. Seems like only yesterday we were saying how there was no reason for ESPN to expand their X Games into the global market because there is no global market for what they do. And now, according to a story on SportsBusiness International it appears they have finally agreed.
An ESPN statement read: “We are proud to have run world-class competitions for both the athletes and spectators; however, the overall economics of these events do not provide a sustainable future path. . . The company remains fully committed to the X Games brand and its full-scale competitions in Aspen, Colorado and Austin, Texas – its newest host city – and we will continue to distribute these premier events around the world.”
You don’t say. It was a nice try though, huh?

Today, October 2, 2013, Oakley is launching the latest update to their Bluetooth connected, heads-up display goggle, the Airwave 1.5. The goggle (which is now for sale in Oakley and Apple.com stores) features a Recon heads-up display allowing users view data as if it were on a 14 inch monitor located about five feet away. What data can viewed on that screen? Pretty much everything you’d need to know while riding, including: current temperature, speed, location, and music control. But the Airwave 1.5, has built in GPS so it will also keep track of vertical feet and where your friends are using Buddy Tracking (if they’re using the Oakley app for iPhone of Android). The display can also notify you to incoming phone calls and texts.
We’re still not sure people need this much data distracting them while they’re plowing their way down the hill, but from what we’ve seen, it works pretty well. The downside: the goggle retails for $649. For the official word from Oakley (and more photos), follow the jump. [click to continue…]

If you’re the marketing director of an action sports company (or better yet, an energy drink company) why waste time developing relationships with a bunch of different little media companies when you can do all your shopping at an advertising super store? That’s seems to be the question Source Interlink’s Grind Media must have been thinking when they partnered up with Europe’s largest action sports media company Factory Media.
With the launch of this new co-operation agreement, GrindMedia and Factory can now offer marketers increased North American and European reach through their respective media sales teams. . . Factory and GrindMedia’s advertising clients will now be able to book digital advertising and content distribution campaigns through the UK, Germany or U.S. offices of the two independent companies. GrindMedia will represent Factory’s North American digital audiences, while Factory will represent GrindMedia’s European sports fans.
How simple is that? Just drop in your advertising and they’ll turn the factory on and grind media out to the world. Everyone’s a winner. For the official world from GrindMedia, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Until the release of the GoPro app (iPhone, Android, and Windows) we’d pretty much thrown in the towel on ever figuring out how to use the overly complicated little action POV cameras. With no easy way to review footage or be certain the camera was even on or pointed in the right direction, we left the GoPros to the professional video guys (and the genius kids). The free GoPro app, however, has changed all that.
Now, with the iPhone app connected to the camera, reviewing shots, grabbing photos and video for Instagram, or setting the cameras functions is as easy as flipping a few sliders on our phone. The GoPro camera is now simply an amazing image gathering extension to our iPhone. Today, as GoPro has announced that the Hero3 has been upgraded to the Hero3+, we’ve become even bigger fans.
So what’s the word on the new rig? The Hero3+ camera is the same size as the Hero3, but features a 30 percent increase in battery life, faster WIFI (four times faster) and a new lens for sharper video and stills. They’ve also added a new “SuperView” video mode that is even wider that before. And when the Hero3+ is used with the new GoPro waterproof housing the total rig is reportedly 20 percent lighter. If you’ve put off buying a GoPro because you didn’t want to deal with the details, worry no more. With the free GoPro Studio 2.0 editing app for Mac and Windows grabbing great video and mashing it down into a quality edit has never been easier.
