High Heel Binding Rumors Not Baseless

by The Editors on March 6, 2008

Highheel

The high-end, Spanish design house of Balenciaga has reportedly created a snowboard binding inspired high-heel for 2007 line. They look a lot like what we pictured the first time we read “Cruel Shoes” by Steve Martin.

Barfoot Snowboards Turns 30

by The Editors on March 6, 2008

Chuck BarfootFor a guy who has been way too-nice for his own good, we’re happy Chuck Barfoot is celebrating 30 year of Barfoot Snowboards. Ethan Stewart spins up an extremely cools story for the Santa Barbara Independent.

In a turn of synchronicity lost on all but the most well-versed snowboarding historians, this snowy start to 2008 was a downright poetic omen for those who know and love Chuck Barfoot. Often overlooked by the history books, repeatedly finding himself on the wrong end of busted-up business deals, and a lifelong devotee of the ride — be it by land, sea, or snow — this snow-blessed 2008 (a recent excursion found a nearly 10-foot base up Mt. Pinos way) also marks the 30th anniversary for the Santa Barbara-born Barfoot Snowboard Company — the unsung, callused hero of a snow-sliding revolution.

We haven’t forgotten you Chuck, Happy 30th. You know this just means your baby is just moving into her prime. . . right? How about an update of that old Jon Boyer Pro Model?

Quiksilver’s Next Wave Knitting Circle

by The Editors on March 6, 2008

Gi 0 ResidentsofsitelaimagebyharpersmithSure, it’s a clever way to promote women and fashion and we guess that’s why Quiksilver is doing an interesting corporate buy-in with their “artist in residence” program at a space in Los Angeles’ trendy Silver Lake. The press release explains it:

To celebrate the introduction of its new collection for women, Quiksilver has selected six independent and creative young women to be Visionaries in Residence at Quiksilver’s siteLA, a communal work and exhibition space in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. . . The residency program is a year-long engagement for women working in and across creative cultural fields. Like sponsored athletes, their personal passions echo the Quiksilver spirit: progressive, creative and confident. Although they have been selected for their independent projects, they share a communal workspace and together create public programs and host special events at siteLA.

Quik has already run sponsoring attractive action models into the ground, why not throw some money to people who are getting cool shit done. We’re just wondering where the reality TV show is to go along with it? Follow the jump for all the details.

Zumiez Takes A Header

by The Editors on March 6, 2008

After announcing that it’s same-store sales in February fell 2.6 percent (which doesn’t sound like a whole lot to us) Zumiez stock took a 14% plunge this morning.

The Everett company (NASDAQ: ZUMZ) said total sales increased last month to $23.1 million from $20.7 million. . . . Analysts were expecting February same-store sales to grow by 1.4 percent to 2 percent so the decline caught some by surprise. Sara Hasan at McAdams Wright Ragen in Seattle lowered her 2008 fiscal year earnings estimate from 97 cents to 92 cents, but she kept a “buy” rating on the stock.

This on the same day that Pacific Sunwear announced that it’s total sales for February increased seven percent and same-store sales for the month increased six percent. Hmmm. . .

Actor To Blow Fortune In Surfwear Biz

by The Editors on March 6, 2008

Matthew-McconaugheyMatthew McConaughey has decided to paddle into the surf clothing business with his own line, J.K. Livin. It’s named after his personal motto: Just Keep Livin.

McConaughey’s must-haves, which will be available from his website, range from t-shirts, to swimwear, to Frisbees. . . . “It will be a one-stop shop for everything you need for the beach,” his rep told a US magazine. “There’s a perception of me as a beach guy,” the actor has previously said.

Wonder if he has the letter JKL on the tail of his personal jet above a lightening bolt?

Jet Set Models Opens Hawaii Office

by The Editors on March 3, 2008

Huge

Pro surfers favorite place to find a little entertainment Jet Set has announced they are opening a new office in Hawaii, you know so they can hook up the local girls.

“I always said that we were a C&H company, a little California and a little Hawaii,” Cindy said, speaking from Jet Set’s new Hawaii office in Ward Plaza where she was warmly welcomed by property manager, Joey Char. “And I am so excited to be located next door to Billabong. Jet Set has booked its models with Billabong since they first arrived in the United States from Australia.”

“It’s been our dream to open an agency in Hawaii for 15 years, but we had to wait until the time was right. Now, I’m stoked to finally paddle back into the lineup,” said Cindy, revealing the casual surfer side of her personality. Believing that the most beautiful commodity of both California and Hawaii is their people, she sees the blend as natural.

No doubt.

British Snowboard Dies In French Crevasse

by The Editors on March 3, 2008

Chamonix is a terrifying place, we know it. Apparently a 33-year-old man from Leeds was on the Vallee Blanche with a guide when he got separated from the group.

He dropped below the main path during a traverse across the slope. Realising his mistake, he stepped out of his bindings and tried to climb up to rejoin the main route.

However, the extra pressure from his boots is thought to have been too much for a snow bridge across a crevasse, which gave way.

Reminds us riding there with a friend who said: “If you see me ollie something, you better ollie because most likely it’s going to be a crevasse.

Sanuk Footwear Of The Year

by The Editors on March 3, 2008

Old news for Sanuk, but a new story from the San Diego Business Journal:

In February, the New York-based trade publication Footwear Plus awarded the local company the Footwear Item of the Year award in the multibillion-dollar footwear industry.

Nearly three years ago, Sanuk introduced the Sidewalk Surfer, slip-on footwear that falls somewhere between a shoe and a sandal. Since then, sales have more than doubled.

The closed-toe shoes are made of malleable cloth that flattens to fit into a backpack or to take to the beach. A pair retails from $48 to $55.

Sanuk President John Vance says that the company’s founder, Jeff Kelley, drives the business and keeps ideas fresh.
