In a shockingly silly legal maneuver ESPN has apparently sued Quiksilver in federal court over an “X” the clothing company has used that looks similar to the ESPN X Games logo.
Quiksilver uses a stylized “X” emblem on clothing, labels and accessories that is “confusingly similar” to ESPN’s logo for the series of surfing and biking contests, according to the lawsuit filed this month in federal court in New York.
“Despite protests by ESPN, Quiksilver has since willfully expanded the use of the infringing mark, and Quiksilver’s apparel and accessories are now replete with the infringing mark,” the suit alleges.
Seems like there would be an easier way to get Quik to advertise, doesn’t it?
The Seshn.com site has been up for awhile, but the press release has just now gone out. And guess who is involved? Former Joyride Snowboards founder Ken Greengard. How is this new action sports portal different from other sites like 5ones.com? Seshn founder Brandon Winnie explains.
Seshn aims to provide people with a unique site that isn’t your typical trendy action sports site attempting to create another YouTube or Myspace for action sports. “The people involved in this lifestyle are leaders and trendsetters, so we feel that we have created a site that meets that label. We have developed a unique concept and strategy that let’s people be the individualists and trendsetters that they are,” Brandon goes on to say. “I started this thing because I saw an opening that wasn’t being filled. I saw so many people trying to copy Myspace, Facebook and YouTube. Those sites will always be around, so why try to compete with them? My idea was let’s create an information network and let’s work with them.”
The WordPress-powered site looks nice (but then don’t they all). It will be interesting to see how the content grows as the site develops in what is becoming a horrendously crowded market place.
Surf legend Gerry Lopez spoke last night at UC Santa Barbara to promote his new book Surf Is Where You Find It.
During his hour-long sermon of surfing lore, Lopez talked about what surfing and the ocean have given to him, as well as how he allowed surfing to shape his life. Lopez was warmly accepted by the crowd of surfing colleagues and fans, eager to hear about his life and his reasons for writing the book. “[My] motivation was to get the stories down on paper before I forgot them,” Lopez said.
Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and cool-guy Dan Malloy were also in the audience. Both think Gerry is amazing. “I got chills six times,” Dan told the Daily Nexus reporter. We know the feeling.
In an email sent out to Transworld Media employees on the morning of April 18, 2008 Group Publisher Jeff Griffing announced that after six months on the job he would be leaving Transworld Media and moving east (the second time in the last year that he has quit and moved).
My wife and I have decided to leave southern California to raise my son Jake back east. . . .There will be rumors that I left because I’m frustrated with Bonnier, Winter Park, whatever…..none of which are true.
His replacement: former VP of Sales and long-time Transworld adman Liam Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson will have the distinction of being Transworld Media’s seventh Group Publisher in the last five years.
Fuel.TV may have been a little slow to the whole online game, but now it seems like they’re hooking up when everyone (which is great). Now they’ve put some of their content up on Next.TV. Unfortunately, Next is still in beta and we don’t have an invites.
NEXT.TV™, the revolutionary new Internet television service which debuted on Hewlett Packard consumer notebooks, today announced the addition of FUEL TV as a NEXT.TV channel partner bringing programming attuned to the lifestyle and culture of skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, BMX, freestyle motocross, and wakeboarding.
On February 15, 2008 Wasserman Media Group, LLC took over administrative control of the Skateboard.com domain and recently posted the following jump page on both its 411vm.com and Skateboard.com sites saying that the two sites will “soon be one.”
Skateboard.com was one of the first skateboarding sites on the web and was originally registered by Tum Yeto’s Tod Swank and partners on June 4, 1996. For a while it was a mailorder site and then slowly evolved into a content and user generated content site covering skateboarding. But it never gained all that much traction in either form.
The crew at Robust Flavor is sending it with viral videoness. As the proprietor said, “A video on Youtube.com can get one million views, that’s more people than read the action sports magazines. And putting it out on Youtube is free.”
The gadget wanks at my favorite technology blog Gizmodo (specifically writer Brian Lam) are getting together at Alpine Meadows on April 5, 2008 for a techno snowboard “meetup.”
The place: Alpine Meadows. The Time: 9AM, upstairs in the main lodge cafeteria or something Nokia is coming with a fleet of N95s we can use, and Vudu and JBL are donating a prizes to give away, as are a few others who aren’t locked down yet.
This is probably the entire snowboard industry’s target market so it may be something worth checking out: Alex Birch and Rick Alden you guys listening?
Burton and Go211.com are pleased to announce a five-year partnership in which Go211 will become a global partner of the Burton Global Open Series (BGOS) and webcast all BGOS competitions and other events over the next five years.
Let’s see, the last time Burton did a big online deal for the Open series it was with a company called Lat34.com. Sadly, Lat34 ran out of money before they could webcast even one full season of Burton Opens. This deal sounds like it will last about three years longer than GO211.com will be around.
