Yobeat.com one of our favorite independent voices in snowboard media got into a little scuffle with some people at Burton Snowboards recently (read all about it right here).
The upshot is that Yobeat.com got a bunch of traffic and now they’re going to hand out some stickers, according to a post on jaredsouney.com:
So, the deal is, buy a snowboard from now through the end of November, and send us a copy of your receipt and we’ll send you free YoBeat stickers. They might be die-cuts, they might be screen prints, they might be an assortment of both. What’s the catch? It can’t be a Burton Snowboard. Anything else will fly, even their subsidiaries like Forum who we quite enjoy. Just no Burtons.
But that’s not all people who write in for free stickers also get entered in a drawing for free gear from the Yobeat.com product reviews.
It’s nice to see the new independent media up on their feet rather than groveling down on their knees, isn’t it?

Employees of Source Interlink Media, the parent company of Action Sports Group (Surfer, Surfing, Snowboarder, and Skateboarder magazines) are reportedly being required to take 10 non-paid vacation days between September 2009 and February 2010 in what amounts to a four percent cut in annual pay.
We can’t imagine the employees are happy about this. Then again, they still have their jobs. . .

When Warren Miller the man appeared in a new ski movie called Refresh from Level 1 Productions, someone at Warren Miller Entertainment didn’t like it, according to a story in the Aspen Daily News.
Last week, Warren Miller Entertainment, a Delaware corporation that is a division of Bonnier Corporation, filed the lawsuit claiming trademark infringement as it owns the rights to the name “Warren Miller,” “Warren Miller Entertainment” and other terms associated with Miller.
For his part Warren, who says his non-compete expired in 1999, says the trademarks that Warren Miller Entertainment owns “do not prevent him from ‘using his fame and status to identify himself and to participate in Level 1’s Refresh ski film.’
It gets much messier and funnier, but we’re guessing this lawsuit is the best thing that could ever happened to Refresh.

Apparently, when Todd Richards isn’t out trying to learn new tricks, he’s out promoting the “extremely fascinating sport of Parkour.” Yes, the same “sport” clowned in the opening segment of this fall’s The Office premiere.
The World Freerunning & Parkour Federation website reports that TR will be hosting a special MTV show on October 22, 2009 titled Ultimate Parkour Challenge.
If you loved the opening chase in CASINO ROYALE, then this show, hosted by Todd Richards, will blow your mind. . . Born in the suburbs of Paris, Parkour/Freerunning turns an urban jungle into an action-packed playground. Moving quickly, efficiently or just plain creatively, Freerunners re-imagine the world as they cruise over, under, around and through whatever is in their way. . . Join 8 of the WFPF Founding Athletes as they live up to their motto, “Know Obstacles. Know Freedom”!
Apparently, the show was originally scheduled to air in April, but got pushed off until October. Oddly, members of the hardcore Parkour community are not happy about the show nor the organization promoting it. Which is kind of funny in itself.
For his part Todd says the show is basically, “Me talking about ninjas getting paid.” And as we all know, Todd has been a ninja supporter since way back in the day.

Conor Dougherty, skateboarding’s best friend at the Wall Street Journal, interviews Sean Cliver on the release of his book The Disposable Skateboard Bible. Sean says he really only has one regret about the book:
My only regret when finally going to the printer this past April—after two-and-a-half years of work compiling images—was not being able to photograph Stacy Peralta’s collection. I was briefly in touch with him, learned he still had the original Zephyr board from the one and only Zephyr ad that ran in the first new issue of Skateboarder Magazine in 1975, but unfortunately that’s as far as I was able to get with him. I guess he was neck-deep in the Crips and Bloods: Made in America documentary at the time and we were never able to hook up to shoot his stash.

Sadly, our intern failed in his quest to cover the Me, Myself, & I premiere at the world famous La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas, California the evening of Thursday, September 24, 2009. And in so doing, our dreams of hanging out with Todd Richards all night (vicariously) were once again dashed. But thankfully, Snowboarder Magazine‘s Kyle Kennedy was on point and pulled down 19 photos from the historic event. And for that we thank him.

Canadian writer Colin Whyte has reviewed friend Dano Pendygrasse’s new Westbeach history book, OutWest on ESPN/Action. And guess what? He likes it.
In “Out West,” Pendygrasse taps into a vitality at the core of snowboarding that seems to have faded in recent years, something akin to snowboarding’s true identity—no matter where you come from—and teases it out in a way that’s never been done before. In short, this ain’t your typical coffee table book. And it’s not just for Canadians.
As non-Canadian people who actually wore head-to-toe Westbeach (including the occasional headband), we have to say we agree. Check it out here. And then buy it. It only costs $12.95.

Todd Richards will be hosting and starring in the world premiere of his new bio-pic Me, Myself, and I at the world famous La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas, California at 8 PM on Thursday September 24, 2009. Sadly, there aren’t two showings that night because we were looking forward to watching it over, and over, and over again. . . .
