Seems that the marketing people from Jeep are still paying attention to events produced by a certain privately owned entertainment company specializing in event and online streamed content production even if the rest of us have given up. Jeep has reportedly signed “a long-term renewal and expansion of their global partnership” with said privately owned entertainment company. This is a good reminder that these deals have less to do with real audience than with how well event sales people are at mirage marketing. (Side note: today is a lay day for the Trestles surf content production event.)

Zander Venezia, a 16-year-old junior pro surfer from Bridgetown, Barbados died while surfing on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 in some “heavy waves” on the east coast of Barbados, according to a story on Surfline.com.
“After getting his fair share of big barrels all morning, the 16-year-old got caught by a closeout set, which drove him into the shallow, rocky bottom. Bleeding and unresponsive, he was pulled out of the water by Nathan Florence, who was among a cadre of pros who flew over to Barbados to catch the mega-swell currently being generated by Hurricane Irma.
According to the story Venezia may have broken his neck. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
In surf hardgood news (and it’s so nice to see there is some) Surftech, makers of fine, durable surf technology has partnered with San Diego, California based Sharp Eye Surfboards for three new Fusion E2 boards: the Disco, Disco Cheater, and the Filipe Toledo endorsed Modern 2 models.

We didn’t attend Agenda. In fact, we haven’t been to one of the shows for what seems like years now (2014 it seems), but truth up, no one called to say they missed us so guess we’re all good. Luckily, LA Weekly went this year so we got the word on this year’s summer Agenda show from an outside source. Which is a good thing every once in a while.

The layout was such that everyone had to walk through the pop-up shops area first before arriving to either music stage. That’s probably why most of the people arriving to watch the Beat Junkies were dressed in new shirts branded with cartoon characters, or sporting new pairs of limited-edition kicks imported from Japan, or strapped with giant novelty backpacks large enough to carry three average-sized toddlers.

On Saturday, June 24, 2017, Switchfoot’s 13th Annual Bro Am at Encinitas, California’s Moonlight Beach brought 17,000 people to the shore, made them dance, and raised more than $200,000 for San Diego youth initiatives.
“We are so honored that the local community would partner with us to host such a unique, inclusive, and meaningful event to help local kids in need,” says Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman. “To see our hometown come together and help deserving kids is an incredible experience. Surfing, Music, and the San Diego scene at its best.”

No shock to anyone really, but we’ve never understood the “streetwear” thing. We know what it’s like to desire every single piece of kit we’d see on our favorite skaters, surfers, and snowboarders, but we never got our heads around the fetishization of those clothes by people who seemed to be more into the fashion (and we mean that in an East Coast/NYC way) than the skateboarding. We’re hoping Bobby Hundreds‘ new documentary Built To Fail: A Street Wear Story will finally enlighten us.

Sad news from Pauoa, Hawaii. The Star Advertiser is reporting that Gerald Aikau, 42, the nephew of big wave surfing legend Eddie Aikau, was found dead on the Aikau family property the morning of June 13, 2017. Inside a cottage his 7-year-old son Reef was also found dead.
Police are investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide, pending the outcome of autopsies by a medical examiner. . . Myra said his [Gerald’s] uncle Clyde Aikau discovered Gerald’s body hanging from a tree and tried to resuscitate him but was unsuccessful. Clyde went into the cottage and found Reef and tried unsuccessfully to try to revive his nephew as well. Police, who received a call from the house at 5:45 a.m., said both the man and boy suffered “multiple injuries” with the boy injured by a sharp object.
Gerald and his wife Katherine Bullock Aikau were reportedly in the middle of a rough divorce. Our thoughts are with Clyde, Myra, Katherine, and the entire Aikau family.
On Saturday June 10, 2017 the California Surf Museum opened an extensive, beautifully curated new exhibit titled China Beach: Surfing During the Vietnam War and the Healing Power of Wave-riding in Oceanside, California.
“The purpose of this exhibit is to portray the little-known but fascinating story of surfing in the combat zones of Vietnam,” says California Surf Museum President and exhibit curator Jim Kempton. “It explores the unique surfing experience of the era, what it meant to those veterans, and how they were able to use surfing as a healing mechanism both during the war and after they returned.”
The exhibit will be on display until February 2018. If you’re in Oside, it’s definitely worth checking out. The California Surf Museum is located at 312 Pier View Way, in Oceanside, California. For the official word form the California Surf Museum, follow the jump.
To anyone who’s spent a day staring out the window of a Minoan Line ferry looking for surf in the Agean Sea this vid will seem like fiction. Yes, we spotted wave with potential off the coast of Delos, one fall during a storm, but nothing like what Nixon surfers Marlon Lipke, Yannick De Jager and Gony Zubizarreta found on this trip.
Chances to score are always very low considering the consistency of swells and the difficulty to predict conditions. Timing is key, local connexions are priceless. All they needed was a call: a friend and local shaper guaranteed them that the conditions displayed on the weather forecast would turn the coast into an idyllic playground, and it did.
Guess so. This whole edit was snagged in one day, and when the day was done, so was the surf.
