Surfing
After a 7.5 quake rocked the easter region of North Sulawesi, Indonesia has issued a Tsunami warning according to Fox News.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 7.0-magnitude quake was centered 195 miles from Manado, the northernmost city on Sulawesi island. It said it had a depth of about 20 miles beneath the ocean floor.. . . The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports that a pacific-wide tsunami that would threaten Hawaii is not expected. . . . However, earthquakes of this size can generate local tsunamis that could be destructive along coasts located within 62 miles of the epicenter.

Another analyst who follows Quiksilver’s stock has downgraded her rating thanks to Quik’s rather large debt, according to a story in the Orange County Business Journal.
Caris & Co. analyst Claire Armstrong Gallacher downgraded Quiksilver’s stock to “average” from “above average,” saying the company’s profits are “at risk” due to its heavy debt and the retail sector’s downturn. . . . “Given the large debt burden, tight credit markets and worsening consumer spending trends we would recommend investment in companies with debt free balance sheets,” Gallacher wrote.
The stock closed the day down 24 cents to $1.59.

Disney is churning out its first “original novel” based on the hit TV show Hannah Montana. The 247-page hardcover book is titled Rock the Waves and features Miley longing for a “hunky” Australian surfer.
The Breakpoint Surf Series is coming to Malibu which, of course, means the appearance of its top star, hunky Talen Wright. Before Miley can convey her daydream of meeting the Australian surfer, it becomes a potential reality with the announcement that Hannah Montana has been asked to perform at a big concert at the end of the two-week contest.
The little girls always go for the Aussies. . .

A Gold Coast Australia Billabong retail store was robbed by a man wielding a syringe, according to a story on Goldcoast.com.au.
The man allegedly held the Ashmore Billabong store employee at syringe point on Saturday morning before taking an unknown amount of clothing and leaving.
All the man took were some children’s clothing.

Durwin Keg, 41, of Maroubra Beach, Australia was surfing Cellito beach on the north coast of New South Wales when he saw something dark beneath him, according to a story in the Herald Sun.
“Straight away I knew it was a shark. He was just sitting under there watching me. . . I knew it was after me,” he said. “I started moving and I could see him going behind me.” Moments later it struck with all its force into Mr Keg’s board. . . .Screaming to his mates to get out of the surf, he began wildly throwing punches at the shark which eventually moved off.
Keg was surprised that he escaped completely unscathed. Maybe that whole “punch ’em in the nose” thing really does work.

Greg MacGillivray, one half of the famous MacGillivray-Freeman IMAX movie team is reportedly working on a documentary film that will explore 50 years of surfing in Hollywood film with a special focus on all the trouble John Milius had making Big Wednesday, according to a story in Variety.
It’s really about how Hollywood’s superficial view of surfing culture has influenced popular culture and the story of what happened when real surfers tried to change that,” MacGillivray said. . . . The yet-to-be-titled documentary includes Thomas Edison’s 1906 Hawaiian surfing footage and excerpts from numerous other surfing films, plus interviews with Kathy Kohner (the real-life Gidget), surfers such as Greg Noll and Mickey Munoz along with Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and Quentin Tarantino.
Sounds like something Ben Marcus was talking about five years ago. . .

As if there aren’t enough sites professing to know what size waves are going to be hitting our favorite breaks tomorrow, it looks like Transworld Surf is jumping in as well.
Bonnier Corp (Transworld Media’s parent company) is currently looking for “a part-time surf forecaster to work remotely to create daily surf reports,” for “an industry leading and established surf media company,” according to a job posting.
Applicants must be familiar with the sport of surfing and its culture. Responsibilities include checking publicly available government information and various other sources, analyzing and interpreting this information and breaking it down into easy-to-understand written surf reports for approximately ten US regions. . . Position is a part-time remote position the will require approximately three hours a day.
Well, they have the guy who built Wave Watch for ASG on the payroll so why not have him build another one? Wonder what they’ll call this one: Transworld Surf Watch?
