BSR Cable Park, the host of Stab High surf event on September 22, 2018, closed on Friday, September 28, 2018 after it was reported that a New Jersey man (Fabrizio Stabile) who had visited the park in early September died from a “brain-eating amoeba,” according to a story in the Waco Tribune.
BSR Cable Park owner Stuart E. Parsons Jr. said BSR Surf Resort values its guests’ safety and will continue to comply with requests from the CDC and local health department in the investigation of the death of Fabrizio “Fab” Stabile.
The wave pool will be closed pending the test results from the Centers for Disease Control for Naegleria fowleri, however, the rest of the resort will reportedly remain open. Our thoughts are with Stabile’s family.

Nixon has talked Craig Stecyk into creating a collection and not surprisingly, it is one of our favorites in a long while. Here’s how they pitch it:
C.R. Stecyk III exists in the shadows, and even when he does slide into the sunlight, it rarely adds clarity. A pioneer of the Dogtown skate ethos, Stecyk has helped shape modern skateboarding in more ways than imaginable: through videos, writing, art installations, and co-founded Juxtapoz Art magazine, among others. A widely-acknowledged street art progenitor, Stecyk’s contributions to the counterculture are so engrained in society that the Smithsonian permanently houses some of his work.
The capsule includes a watch, a camera bag, and some other cool stuff. Sadly, there are only 100 watches and bags world wide (it’s limited). So if you want one you better hurry to an exclusive Nixon retailer. For the details, click the link.
Each week we read more stories than we have time to post so we’re going to link them up with little or no commentary every now and again because commentary means caring and we don’t seem to have much energy pointed in the caring direction lately (sorry Stab High).
So for a few of the stories from the last week, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
On Saturday September 15, 2018 bodyboarder Arthur Medici, 26, of Revere, Massachusetts, was attacked by a shark at Newcomb Hollow Beach at Cape Cod, according to the National Park Service. He was pulled out of the water and taken to Cape Cod Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to a story in the New York Times.
Medici was attacked around noon as he and a friend were boogie boarding. The friend dragged him ashore, and people on the beach attempted life-saving measures including CPR and applying tourniquets. He was taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where he was pronounced dead.
This is the first shark attack death in the area since 1936, however, it is the second attack in over a month, according to the story. The beach remains closed.
Fernando Aguerre was re-elected unopposed yesterday (September 16, 2018) as President of the International Surfing Association (ISA) at the ISA Annual General Meeting (AGM) during the 2018 UR ISA World Surfing Games in Tahara, Japan.
Aguerre, whose tenure at the ISA is highlighted by Surfing’s inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, will commence his 9th term as President since being first elected in 1994.
“My first words are ones of gratitude to the ISA Members for the continued confidence and support of me on this amazing ride,” said President Aguerre. “I am as passionate for Surfing and the ISA as I was when I first started. I am honored to be able to continue to lead this organization and to dedicate my time and efforts to this worthy cause as we look ahead to a bright future.
Occasionally no term limits is a good thing, right? Follow the jump for the rest of the story.
2John Florence and Blake Vincent Kueny are back at it again with a little film called Space. Lots of preaching from pastor T.D. Jakes in this one. Surfing starts at the two-minute mark, but it is worth the wait. More evidence that 2John is a solid wave rider.
A privately owned entertainment company specializing in event and online streamed content production (mostly surfing sport) announced today that they will be equalizing prize money for men and women who perform in their content productions during the 2019 season.
The CEO of said company (who identifies as female) thinks this is a pretty big deal:
“This is a huge step forward in our long-planned strategy to elevate women’s surfing and we are thrilled to make this commitment as we reveal our new 2019 schedule,” she says. “This is the latest in a series of actions the League has undertaken to showcase our female athletes, from competing on the same quality waves as the men, to better locations, and increased investment and support.”
Good on ya girls. Just what those prize purses will be has apparently not been announced. Either way, it’s time to get out there and snag some of this money while the content production company still has some.
Lately, we’ve been on the perpetual hunt for a sunscreen that works, is safe, and doesn’t wreck the environment. We’ve been told the best protection is Titanium dioxide and Zinc oxide. Well, turns out Gerry Lopez’s new sponsor TropicSport offers up just that combination.
“I’m honored to be a TropicSport brand ambassador. The company and I are perfectly aligned in our commitment to protecting and preserving our oceans’ reefs and ecosystems. Their sunscreen works very well. I’ve used it surfing, in the water under intense sun for eight hours, one application and no sunburn. TropicSport does the job!” said Lopez.
Guess we’ll have to give it a try. Follow the jump for all the official details, and if you haven’t been to a dermatologist in a while make an appointment TODAY.
