There’s one thing successful pro surf girls of the new millennium seem to understand: their asses are their assets.
Knowing this better than most, Claire Bevilacqua is joining Serena Williams, Dwight Howard, Christina Kim, Manny Pacquio, Laird Hamilton and other sporting stars and reportedly appearing missing most of their clothes in ESPN Magazine’s “The Body” issue, according to USA Today.
Guess this will give people at least one reason to buy the magazine.

It hasn’t stopped snowboarders Gretchen Bleiler or Travis Rice, but doesn’t it seem weird that Layne Beachley (pictured center) is competing in her own ASP tour event? The contest is called the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic and Layne is in there competing right along side everyone else.
Unlike Gretchen and Travis, Layne won’t win her contest, and she has reportedly announced that she will absolutely, positively retire after the classic is over, but still it just doesn’t seem right.

Philippine actor Jericho Rosales, of Manila has been surfing since 1999. So when Tropical Storm Ketsana caused flood waters to rise in his Quezon City tneighborhood he took action, according to a story on ABS-CBNnews.com.
“On my way back to my house, I saw my friend, asked me if I had transport and then he said they needed help because some kids were stuck in their houses,” he said. . . Rosales . . . rushed home to get his surfboards and some basketballs, then donned his vest, board shorts, and a rash guard. . . Lying flat on his surfboard and paddling over the flood waters, he and his friends were able to help some villagers and neighborhood dogs get to higher ground. . . In all, he said, he was able to rescue 2 dogs, an old woman, a lady, and a child. Rescued villagers, he said, were brought to higher ground within the village.

Don’t try and say that Dave “Rasta” Rastovich isn’t doing anything for the environment. On Thursday, October 1, 2009 the recent recipient of the 2009 SIMA Environmentalist of the Year Award is heading off on a 700k ocean paddle from Byron Bay to Sydney to “raise awareness of whaling in the Southern Ocean,” according to a story in The Australian.
He will embark on his ambitious Transparentsea journey on Thursday, tracking the annual migration south of humpback whales over a gruelling 36 days. . . Rastovich, 29, an environmental activist and surfing champion out of Brunswick Heads, aims to paddle the entire distance in his single-seat kayak. . . If all goes to plan, he will hit Bondi Beach on November 5. . . “What excites me the most is being able to combine the high-risk elements of surfing and sailing and the notion of endurance and pushing your body,” Rastovich says. . . “I’m eager to bring those elements together with environmental awareness initiatives.”
Well, at least he’s not pushing a longboard skateboard through the outback.

Most everyone is flying to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico today to party with the surf industry at the 12th Annual SIMA Surf Summit which runs September 30 through October 3, 2009. Speakers this fall reportedly include VF Corp’s Steve Murray, Volcom’s Richard Woolcott, Andrew Zolli of Pop!Tech, and The Intelligence Group’s Jane Buckingham.
We’re just hoping there is some good surf, because it makes all the nob polishing so much more palatable.

Fifty-mile-an-hour winds are pushing waves up to 18 feet on Lake Michigan thanks to the area’s first fall storm, according to a story on Michigan Radio.
In Grand Haven, the high winds brought out massive waves, and that caught the attention of 25-year-old Dustin Mason, a surfer. . . . “This is definitely one of the bigger days that I’ve ever seen out here,” he says. “We were looking online and saw that the waves were supposed to be like 14 to 18 feet, we were kinda freaking out.”
In the Midwest, surfers take it when it comes.

Few have done more with less than Mick Fanning as he destroyed small, mixed up surf early in his final heat against a combo’d Bede Durbidge in the Quiksilver Pro France in Seignosse.
“I was really fortunate to get those couple of good ones at the start because I really ran out of gas there at the end,” Fanning said. “It’s two back-to-back events where I have had to surf four heats on the final day to get the win and it takes a lot out of you. The conditions were deteriorating and I was fortunate to get those scores on the board early on.”

Heitor Alves, Roy Powers, and Ben Dunn advanced out of their round 2 heats in the Quiksilver Pro France and then officials called it for the day after running only three heats competition.
Ben Dunn (AUS), 23, current ASP World No. 26, surfed one of the strangest heats of the Quiksilver Pro France thus far. His opponent, Chris Ward (USA), 30, who had already missed his Round 1 heat due to scheduling confusion, overslept this morning and failed to show up until 15 minutes into the 30 minute heat. . . “Well, it definitely plays with your head,” Dunn said. “Wardo missed his Round 1 heat and I thought he was going to show up for today’s heat because I saw him yesterday, but he said he overslept or something. It was still pretty even when he arrived though as I couldn’t get any waves.”

Three-and-half days after cramping up so badly that he needed IV fluids Dane Reynolds marched over to the Quiksilver Pro in Seignosse, France and put Nathaniel Curran and Jay Thompson away in round one. Seems like he’s taking to this world travel thing pretty well.
“I knew that wave was going to offer up a score for me and all I had to do was surf it as best I can,” Reynolds said. “It had a good wall on it and I was able to do a few turns. It’s too bad for Nathaniel (Curran) as he was surfing really, really well, but I’m sure he’ll do well in his Round 2 heat.”

Last night at around 10:30 PM PST CJ Hobgood sent out the following message on Twitter. “HOLY EFFIN CRAP! all my boards were stolen last night, reward name your price? 5 CGD,1 tokoro,1 TL2 AND 2 MERRICKS.magics yellow blue rails.”
Stab Magazine immediately jumped in and got the entire story:.
CJ arrived in the beachside suburb of Seignosse at 4.30pm yesterday. He retired to bed around midnight, waking at 4.30am to find his boards stolen. The thieves had entered through the back sliding door, which had been left open by someone in his travelling party. While he, his brother and trainer Chris Gallagher had slept, the crims lifted all nine of the Floridian’s boards for the European leg. Amazingly, none the sleds were in a board bag, meaning the thieves – assuming there was less than four of them – would have had to make more than one trip through the house. Not to mention a conspicuous get away with CJ’s beaming neon-railed sleds under their arms.
CJ is offering a reward for the boards “$1,500 Euros for their return no questions asked. Anyone with information should email jed@rollingyouthcom and he’ll pass on the info.
