When surfer Alana Blanchard was in SoCal for the recent premier of the Bethany Hamilton bio-pic Soul Surfer she apparently spent the day with photographer Bo Bridges. One thing is for sure. Aside from being the originator of the Lien air, many credit Neil Blender with creating the entire skater-as-artist ethos. We don’t disagree. And tonight those in Southern California can get an up-close and personal view of exactly how this happened as the Vans Thalia Surf Shop hosts a show of some of Neil’s classic work as well as the new Vans signature clothing line he designed for surfer Joel Tudor.
The Neil Blender for Vans show opens tonight (April 7, 2011) at 6 PM. The Vans Thalia Surf Shop is located at 915 South Coast Highway, in Laguna Beach, California.

San Clemente, California surfer Jim Miller, 54, stopped to check the surf at the Trestles overlook on Sunday, April 3, 2011, and as he was walking back to his car he was hit on the foot by a rattlesnake, according to a story in the OC Register.
“I heard the rattle just as he got me and then again as he was taking off,” said Miller, 54. “I knew it was a rattlesnake right away and called 911 with my cellphone. . . “At the hospital, the nurse asked me twice if my affairs were in order and if I had a will.”
Miller ended up at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center and after a short trip home checked back into the hospital on Tuesday. He is reportedly going home on April 7, 2011. Gotta be careful out in the wilderness, we guess.

Stage 1 of the 4th Annual Ultimate Boarder snow, surf, skate triathlon wrapped up under blue skies at Mammoth Mountain on Saturday, April 2, 2011 with Chas Guldemond edging Mammoth loc and defending snowboard champ Trevor Jacob for the title. Shayne Pospisill finished third.
On his final run, Guldemond connected a 900 and switch double cork 1080 to beat out Jacob by 1.6 points. “At all my events I have entered this year, it keeps coming down to my last run,” said Guldemond smiling over his big win. “Overall it was a great day with spring conditions, and it was really fun to watch surfers and skaters all ride together,” he added.
Former pro snowboader Todd Richards had a rough time in the competition according to his Twitter feed and was not too happy with his 30th place finish. “What a time to have 3 bad slope style runs ! F word,” he Tweeted following the competition.
The Ultimate Boarder continues this week with surf (April 6 or April 7, 2011) and skateboarding April 9 at Seaside Reef Parking lot in Cardiff, California. Follow the jump for full results and more info. [click to continue…]

The photos from the ASP 1-Star DNA Energy Pro Junior event at the shark bite capital of the world New Smyrna Beach Inlet, Florida have been cracking us up on a daily basis. But they’re also reminding us of two other things: how hard core Florida surfers are and how lucky we are to have waves most of the year.
Seriously, look at this photo again. Either Evan Geiselman has grow 7 feet since we saw him last or that wave he’s on is about 10 inch tall. “Challenging conditions” for sure. [click to continue…]

According to these photos from x17 online, it would appear that surfer Jon Rose is checking his Code Red PMS alert app to see what mood Pamela Anderson is in at the moment. From the look on her face, she’s all good. x17 says:
The sexy twosome couldn’t keep their hands off each other while strolling through Ibirapuera Park in Sao Paulo, Brazil for World Water Day. Looks like Pam has snatched up another hottie! . . Besides loving the beach, the two have something else in common … both are activists. While Pam is dedicated to PETA, Rose is the founder of Waves for Water, an organization whose mission is to “get clean water to everyone who needs it.”
You’d think Kelly Slater would have warned Jon.

Surfer Dave Pearson, 48, was surfing New South Wales’ Austalia’s Crowdy Head at about 6:30 PM when he was hit by a three-meter shark, according to a story in the Daily Telegraph.
The Coopernook local had been swimming in the rough surf for several hours before the beast attacked him – severing his arm and causing lacerations to his face. . . Crowdy Beach Surf Life Saving caretaker Adam Eady was one of the first on the scene to help Mr Pearson when his friends brought him to shore. . . “He was very lucky to come away from that without serious injuries. . . “The shark bit through his board – if it hadn’t of been there it would have ripped him in half.”
Experts say the shark that hit Pearson was most likely a bull shark. It was the second attack in the area in a week, according to the story.

We’ve been charmed lately by Ms. Enever’s solid surfing and saucy dance moves, but now Stab magazine is sharing a few images from their Hard-cover book along with an interview with ASP Women’s tour number 3 about getting undressed for Stab.
We had a stylist who picked out heaps of clothes but I ended up, uh, kinda not wearing clothes at all. But, it was really cool. I walked out of the shoot feeling like I’d grown up five years. It was, like, a confidence boost to know that I could feel comfortable with myself taking those types of photos. At first, I was a bit freaked out and then I got more confident; it made me more confident in my body image. I’ve never done anything quite like that and it opened my eyes. I walked out and went, whoa, what just happened?
Strangely, after seeing the photos, we were thinking the same thing.

Perennial ASP number two Taj Burrow is reportedly building a AUS$3 million palace in Yallingup in Western Australia. The “palatial beach house” is reportedly being built in the shape of a nautilus shell, according to a story on Perth Now.
The stylish three-storey mansion will feature a plunge pool, tiled outdoor bar and entertaining areas and sprawling open-plan kitchen, with cedar cladding and polished and off-form concrete throughout. . . It was designed by renowned Dunsborough architect Dane Richardson, of Dane Designs Australia. One resident in the street said the property would be the “ultimate bachelor pad” for Yallingup’s most famous resident.
It’s nice to see Taj staying local with a local designer. Richardson obviously has serious skills. Our only question is: when’s the open house?

Surfers are a different breed. They are special. And no one is more of a surfer than The Surfer. And according to a story on The Surfer’s Path, comedian/actor Dominic Coleman’s surfer:
. . . perfectly captures the English mid-life surfer-yuppie archetype in all his lack of glory. He’s shockingly real, and while you may or may not recognize someone you know, or even yourself, in this film, the deeply shallow surf philosophies that underpin this character are arguably universal.
