CHAS GULDEMOND TAKES THE PODIUM IN A NAIL-BITING FINISH AT STAGE 1 OF 4th ANNUAL ULTIMATE BOARDER® AT MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN
Guldemond beats out Trevor Jacob by a few tenths of a point in his final run. Stage 2 Surf will be announced Monday.

Mammoth, California (April 2, 2011) – Stage 1 of the 4th Annual Ultimate Boarder® Championship came down to the final two runs of the day at Mammoth Mountain, California. Chas Guldemond, favored to win the event, was in second place behind Trevor Jacob, needing just 0.3 points to take the leading podium spot.

On his final run, Guldemond connected a 900 and switch double cork 1080 to beat out Jacob by 1.6 points. “At all my events I have entered this year, it keeps coming down to my last run,” said Guldemond smiling over his big win. “Overall it was a great day with spring conditions, and it was really fun to watch surfers and skaters all ride together,” he added.

Besides Guldemond, there were impressive performances by all 58 riders, and strong camaraderie amongst the surfers, skaters and snowboarders who all cheered and egged each other on at the slopestyle course. “The environment was much more relaxed than a lot other competitions,” said Garrett Warnick who took first in the team division for Team Encrypted beating out Team Revolt and Team Lost who took second and third place, respectively.

This year’s Grom (15 and under) Division was as impressive as ever. “These kids are our future so it’s great to have them here now because these are the kids who will be on the podium at Ultimate Boarder® 2020 and years to come,” said announcer Brad J Lilley.

Three snowboarders may have taken the podium at stage one at Mammoth today, but surfing is up next, and waves are a whole different riding platform than snow. Chas Guldemond, who will be wearing the blue leader jersey going into stage 2 surf, said surfing is his weakest board sport.

Two-time Ultimate Boarder® Champion Chad Shetler took tenth place in the snow today, leaving him in prime position to three-peat as the UB Champ. Veteran UB competitor Shayne Pospisil who finished is 3rd is also a contender for the top spot.

The surf forecast is calling for swell all next week, so stage 2 Surf will be announced this Monday, scheduled for either Wednesday, April 6th or Thursday, April 7th starting at 8am at Seaside Reef in Cardiff, California. The final stage will take place this coming Saturday April 9th, with skateboarding and an awards ceremony starting at 10am from the Seaside Reef Parking lot. It’s the first time there has ever been a skate contest held at a California State Park. The event is free and open to the public. Fans and spectators are urged to bring beach chairs and blankets.
