Drunk Driving Doctor Fined By Health Department

by The Editors on August 7, 2012

Corasanti-1Dr. James G. Corasanti, the Getzville, New York physician who was driving drunk and reportedly texting when he mowed down (and killed) 18-year-old skateboarder Alexandria M. Rice has been fined $10,000 and put on five years probation by the New York State Department of Health, according to a story in the Buffalo News.

Corasanti, 56, of Getzville, agreed to a consent decree under which he may practice medicine only under the supervision of another licensed physician while he is on probation. He also must be monitored by a therapist and a sobriety monitor. . . The order goes into effect Monday. He may appeal to lift the probation after three years.

Corasanti must also undergo “random sobriety screenings” and enroll in an “ethics program.” We’re still hoping Corasanti gets at least his year in jail. He will be sentenced on August 16, 2012.

Drunk Driving Skateboarder Killing Dr. Gets Off

by The Editors on May 31, 2012

Alix+Rice+1Remember Dr. James Corasanti, the prominent New York physician who drove drunk, hit and killed a 18-year-old skateboarder Alix Rice (pictured right), and then drove straight home leaving her dead on the side of the road, deleted text messages from his phone, and allegedly wiped evidence off his car back in July of 2011?

Well, the amazing legal system in Buffalo, New York worked its wonders for the well-connected doctor when, after 13 days of trial the jury “acquitted Corasanti on all felony charges related to the death of the 18-year-old longboard skater,” according to a story in the Buffalo News.

Jurors acquitted Corasanti of second-degree manslaughter, the most serious charge he faced, and second-degree vehicular manslaughter. The jury also acquitted him of two evidence-tampering charges: deleting text messages from his mobile telephone and removing the victim’s blood and body tissue from his car. . . He also was acquitted of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, resulting in death.

What is insane about this entire story is that everyone agrees that the doctor was driving drunk, texting, and that he hit and killed Rice and continued driving home, but the jury apparently believes that Corasanti didn’t know he had hit a person. Apparently, that makes a difference in legal terms. All Corasanti was found guilty of was misdemeanor driving while intoxicated.

Rice’s family was obviously blown away by the injustice. All Rice’s mom could say after the verdicts were read was “What the fuck?” The mom’s boyfriend was escorted from the court room for “yelling expletives” at the jury.

Buffalo News columnist Donn Esmonde, who wrote a column titled Justice Blindsided by Outcome, was equally appalled.:

But the ultimate tragedy, to my mind, is the way this morality play ended: with no justice done. Sedita said he has never, in 24 years as a prosecutor, been as “astonished” by a verdict. . . .”We tried the case as best we could,” said the district attorney. “I am sorry, on behalf of Alix, that she did not get justice.”

Alix Rice’s family is pursuing a civil case against Corasanti, however, all that will do is get insurance money. No story we have linked to has caused us more pain than this. Our thoughts are with Rice’s family and friends and we hope they can eventually find some kind of justice in this completely broken system.

LA’s New Skateboarding Speed Limit

by The Editors on May 4, 2012

600-2On Wednesday, May 2, 2012 the Los Angeles City Council voted to approve a “motion aimed at outlawing recess skateboarding or “bombing,”” according to a story in the LA Times.

On a 12 to 0 vote, the council instructed City Atty. Carmen Trutanich to draft an ordinance that would prohibit “unsafe” skateboard activity and limit riders to a speed of 25 mph. . . The proposal was initiated by Councilman Joe Buscaino, who described it as a response to the death of two skateboarders over the last year. Buscaino, the council’s newest member, said he wants to end downhill skateboard “bombing” — the practice of riding at high speeds, sometimes while weaving in and out of traffic — in his harbor district.

Ordinances that specifically single out skateboarding are bad for all kinds of reasons. Rather than create special rules that apply only to skateboarders the LA City Council should simply apply the rules of the road the govern bicycles and cars. Of course, that would be too simple and not nearly as headline grabbing.

Maryland Court Rules Against Rivieri Again

by The Editors on April 30, 2012

Angry, golf cart driving, skateboard grabbing, kid choking, smart ass Baltimore Police officer (and Internet Celebrity) Salvatore Rivieri is thankfully still fired even though the Baltimore Police Union thinks he is such an amazing officer that they are fighting his removal from the police force all the way to Maryland’s Court of Appeals (and maybe the Supreme Court), according to a story in the Baltimore Sun.

Maryland’s second highest court on Friday upheld the firing of a Baltimore police officer who was caught on video berating and pushing a 14-year-old skateboarder at the Inner Harbor in 2007. . . The Court of Special Appeals ruled that Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld III had the authority to terminate the 19-year veteran officer, Salvatore Rivieri, despite a recommendation from an administrative hearing board that he be suspended for six days and lose six days of leave.

For those following along this is the second time a high court has upheld Rivieri’s firing. The last time was in March of 2011. To anyone who watches this video (even five years later) it is almost laughable that Rivieri ever had a badge in the first place. He is a disgrace to anyone who wears a badge and the the Baltimore Police Union should be ashamed that it spent the last five years in court trying to keep him on the force.

Snowboarder Bandit Hits Palm Springs

by The Editors on April 25, 2012

Snowbdr BndtSounds like the Snowboarder Bandit was running a little low on cash after a wild weekend two in Coachella and decided he needed to pick up a little more spending money at the BBVA Compass branch at (get this) 420 S. Palm Canyon Drive, according to a story on MyDesert.com.

He walked into the bank branch, presented a clerk with a note saying he had a gun and left with an undisclosed amount of money, Amormino said. . . FBI Special Agent Chris Gicking, who said it’s believed to be the first time the suspect has ventured out of Orange County to commit a heist.

The more we see this guy, the more familiar he looks. In this photo, he’s not even trying to hide. Free money must be a hard habit to break either that or he just wanted to “go to 11.”

Often seen donning a beanie or sunglasses, he is the county’s most-active serial robber – and one of the most-wanted bank robbers by the FBI in Southern California.

If he looks sort of familiar call the FBI at 714-542-8825. If he looks really, really familiar better tell him to make a run for the border.

Cause Longboarder Gets A Ticket

by The Editors on April 17, 2012

778196-Aaron-Salta

Aaron Salta, a musician from Geelong, Australia, who is trying to skateboard 2,000 km to “raise awareness about depression,” got a ticket today (April 17, 2012), according to a story in the Herald Sun.

Mr Salta, 30, [was] less than 200km north of his destination of Adelaide. . . [when a] a South Australian motorcycle police officer . . . fined him $108 for riding a “toy” on a road that has a speed limit greater than 50km/h.

We have to admit, Salta does look like he’s just begging for police harassment, doesn’t he?

Longboarder Screws Up Bank Robbery

by The Editors on April 9, 2012

600Leave it to a longboarding bank robber to put on a wig, a San Diego Padres snapback, and roll into a Wells Fargo bank only to hair out at the last minute and walk out. That’s what happened on Saturday, April 7, 2012 in La Jolla, California according to a story on KTLA.com.

The man walked into the Wells Fargo branch at 7714 Girard Ave. in La Jolla at about 1:38 p.m., the FBI said. He handed a demand note to a teller. The teller looked at the note and then at the man. The would-be robber may have panicked at that point, because he grabbed back the note and walked out of the bank. . . No money was taken and no one was injured in the robbery attempt.

The man, who police described as in his mid-30s or early 40s and white, may have had a last minute change of heart. Sad it couldn’t have happened three minutes before he walked into the bank.

Gunman Robs Pac Sun Store?

by The Editors on April 2, 2012

Pacsun LogoAn obviously uninformed gunman walked into a San Deigo, California Pacific Sunwear store on Sunday, April 1, 2012 to rob the place, according to a story on 10News.com.

The robber was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun as demanded cash from an employee at the Pacific Sunwear store at 321 Horton Plaza at about 10:20 a.m., according to San Diego police Sgt. Jeff Napier. . . He was described as a white man in his 20s who was about 6 feet 1 inch tall. He was wearing a baseball hat, a black “fluffy” jacket and gray jeans.

The robber walked with a little cash and an iPod. Apparently, he didn’t know that if he was after real money he should have hit a Zumiez or a Tilly’s.

Snowboarder Bandit Nabs A Perfect 10

by The Editors on March 22, 2012

Snow BanditThe snowboarder bandit, who in the past has preferred Volcom beanies, nailed his perfect 10 when he robbed a U.S. Bank inside an Irvine, California grocery store located in the 3900 block of Portola Parkway on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, according to a story on 4NBC. It was his 10th bank robbery since December 2011.

The suspect fled from the scene and appeared to divert from his usual headwear – a beanie cap – in favor of a motorcycle helmet during his latest robbery, police said. . . .FBI and Irvine police are investigating the incident, and said they had not determined what or how much the suspect stole. . . He is described as white man in his mid-to-late 20s, between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall, weighing between 120 to 180 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes.

Maybe now that he’s switched to helmets police can begin calling him the crotch rocket bandit and leaving snowboarding out it.
