From the learning something new everyday file: apparently there is a National Collegiate Skiing and Snowboarding Association and it seems they just had their national championships at Winterpark, Colorado. On top of all that, all the mens’ snowboard events were won by members of the Sierra Nevada College team, according to a story in the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza.
The Eagles placed first in all four men’s events, with four different athletes winning. . . . “It was great for the guys to have every event won by a different athlete,” coach Jeff Corrado said.
This is like a trifecta of stuff we’ve never heard of before. . . and that’s a rare occurrence. Not that we care about any of this, it’s just more proof that there is some kind of parallel universe out there.

Collin Murray, Mike McGraw, Brian Callan, and Scott Petrichko are Bean Snowboards: Boston’s snowboard micro-brewery. And, according to a story in the Boston Herald, they are “proudly spreading the word that their boards are ‘Made in Boston.'”
By hosting numerous demo days and rail jams at Blue Hills, which is only a few miles from downtown Boston, Bean is trying to build a local riding community that takes pride in a homegrown board, commented Callan. . . . It’s a business model that has worked well for some small West Coast board companies, but might be tough to duplicate in New England, where brands like Burton, Ride and Rome dominate. “The East Coast is more of a commoditized market,” Murray said.
As long as they’re having fun, right?

Snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler and skateboarder Ryan Sheckler have joined retired soccer player Mia Hamm, basketballer Steve Nash and others on the Mission Skincare team according to a story in the Detroit Free Press.
The athletes have all signed on as advisers to Mission Skincare, along with Serena Williams, Carmelo Anthony and golfer Sergio Garcia. They’re involved in development, testing and marketing products that suit their needs, and the brand has committed to make charitable donations to the athletes’ pet causes. . . . “I loved the idea of working with people who really wanted my feedback, from me traveling around the world, being outdoors — usually in zero-degree weather,” says Bleiler. She says she influenced the size, texture and taste of the Sweet Vanilla Lip Balmer, as well as the anti-sting element of the sunscreen.

Tomorrow night (March 7, 2009) on FOX TV former pro snowboarder and The Bachelorette winner/loser Jesse Csincsak will be helping John Walsh and America’s Most Wanted in the search for the person responsible for murdering snowboarder Benjamin Bradley in Wyoming sometime in June 2006. The key to “cracking this case” may be a one-of-a-kind Never Summer snowboard Ben was carrying when he disappeared.
Ben’s board is black with an eagle grasping lightning bolts in its talons. The eagle’s wings read “Never” on the left and “Summer” on the right. On the second banner that runs parallel to the eagle’s wings is the word “Denver,” and the bottom of the snowboard reads “Legacy.”
We’re not sure what Csincsak is going to add to the show, but apparently these are the kinds of jobs you get after you become a reality TV star.

According to a story in the Summit Daily News a 30-year-old snowboard instructor died on Aspen’s Buttermilk Mountain after running into a tree. Chris Polke, was reportedly off-duty, but wearing his uniform.
The accident happened shortly after noon, and the man, whose name has not been released by authorities, reportedly was administered CPR by ski patrollers before being taken to an ambulance and transported to Aspen Valley Hospital. . . “Chris absolutely lived for snowboarding,” said Mark Wilkinson, Buttermilk snowboard coordinator for the Ski Schools of Aspen. “His love for the sport was infectious and he was universally loved by everyone who worked with him. He was an all-around mountain guy and was always on the last lift up the mountain at the end of the day. He will be dearly

Over the past few days we’ve been getting repeated reports of Active’s plans to close several of their 29 Southern California retail locations. The company is closing its Chula Vista store this week.
Active President Shane Wallace hinted at this in a January profile in Women’s Wear Daily saying that he wouldn’t rule out store closings, if needed. “We’ll do what makes sense for our business,” he said.
