by The Editors on June 3, 2016

GR4R_2016_FLIER-2

Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Aaron Homoki, Ben Raybourn, Lizzie Armanto, and a great crew of skateboard legends are heading down South on June 19, 2016 for a celebration of the life of Ray Underhill with an 80s themed Get Rad For Ray at the Kennesaw Skateboard Park in Kennesaw, Georgia.

A Wilmington, North Carolina native, Underhill was a member of the infamous Bones Brigade squad of the 1980s, a teammate of Hawk’s, and known for his smooth skating style. But his friends remember him best for his kindness, wit, and dedication—his true enduring legacies. . . “Ray was a great friend,” said Hawk. “We miss him every day, so we’re coming to Kennesaw to remember him the best way we know—to skate in his honor while helping others!”

Ray died in 2008 after a long battle with Chordoma, a rare form of spinal cancer. Funds raised by the event will go to the Ray Underhill Foundation. Just posting this reminds us of how much we enjoyed every minute we spent with Ray. For the official word from the Tony Hawk Foundation, please follow the jump.

Brooklyn, New York’s BAMcinematek has lined up one seriously deepcollections of skateboard filmmaking as they present Skateboarding Is Not A Crime. The ultimate in counterculture coolness, “skating” has made an irresistibly sexy subject for movies thanks to its rebel-athlete superstars, SoCal slacker fashion, and jaw-dropping jumps, ollies, tricks, and stunts.

Right. That said, this collection of skateboarding film includes the classics from every era featuring The Devil’s Toy from 1966, Scott Dittrich’s Freestylin‘, Spike Jonze’s Yeah Right, and Hollywood classics like Thrashin’ and Gleaming The Cube. Guerrero To Receive TWS Legend Award

by The Editors on February 26, 2013

Tommyguerrero Tws13Legend

Transworld Skateboarding has named Bones Brigade legend Tommy Guerrero the winner of the 2013 Legend Award and will bestow it on him during the 15th Annual Transworld Skateboarding Awards in Hollywood, California tomorrow night (Wednesday, February 27, 2013).

As a top shelf member of the Bones Brigade during the height of the ’80s boom, Tommy basically became the face of “streetstyle” at a time when that very concept was about to turn skateboarding on its head. Born and raised in San Francisco, Tommy put the city’s now infamous hills and unique terrain on the map for skateboarding. His part in Powell Peralta’s 1985 video Future Primitive was not only revolutionary, but hugely influential to the sport of skateboarding. As the first official “street pro” in skateboarding, Tommy’s free-flowing improvisational style and creative use of the San Francisco concrete, set the stage for modern street skating.

by The Editors on January 23, 2012

While much of the press is focused on Stacy Peralta’s Sundance Film Festival premier of Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, the filmmaker also has his hands in another film as producer of the Vans Warped Tour documentary No Room For Rockstars.

With more than 300 hours of film shot during the 2010 tour, No Room For Rock Stars documents the true stories of modern era rock and roll from every possible angle. A historical retrospective or concert film this is not.

No Room For Rockstars open in select theaters nation wide on March 1, 2012 and will hit the iTunes store on April 2, 2012. Follow the jump for the official word and a slew of photos from the Slamdance premiere. [click to continue…]
