Yesterday, January 28, 2011, while Skullcandy founder Rick Alden was busy bringing together some of the most authentic, pioneers in snowboarding (Chuck Barfoot, Terry Kidwell, and Kelly Jo Kelly) for a poster signing at the company’s SIA Snow Show booth, other execs were filing a Form S-1 with the SEC.
What had been simply rumor and speculation was now official: Skullcandy is going public.
When we tweeted the news, Alden seemed surprised that the word was out. “Who told you that,” he asked. We just shrugged.
According to a story on Reuters Alden and his crew plan to raise $125 million in an initial public offering.
The underwriters are being led by Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley. The shares are expected to trade on the Nasdaq under the symbol “SKUL.

It’s the middle of summer, but the Snow Industries of America wants everyone to know that the show’s move to Denver, Colorado (yee haw) is the best thing ever and they’ve got video proof from the likes of Joel Gomez, Dave Roseberger, Andrew Marriner, Rick Alden (and some guys we don’t know from some ski companies) in this six minute “come to cowtown” video.

We had these Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket Earbuds laying around the office for a couple months thinking they would be a perfect back-up for when our Apple buds took a second tour through the washing machine.
Skullycandy CEO Rick Alden told us they were amazing, but we didn’t really listen. When we finally plugged them a couple weeks ago we immediately felt like complete and total idiots for having waited so long.
These are simply the best earbuds we have ever used on any device. They fit our ears right out of the box, but if they didn’t Skullcandy was nice enough to include four more sets of buds virtually guaranteeing a perfect fit. The design of the 11 mm speaker and bud blocks out just the right amount of annoying outside sounds without making us completely oblivious to oncoming traffic, and the sound stays solid from listening to podcast at night to rocking out on a crowded train.
We recommend doing what we wish we had done months ago: Throw your Apple earbuds directly in the trash and go grab a pair of Full Metal Jackets. They are available online for $69.95 and for those who live by their iPhone or iPod they are worth every penny.
The biggest party of SIA09 was the Skullcandy Snoop Dogg show in Rain at The Palms Hotel and Casino last night (Thursday January 29, 2009). Rick Alden and his crew handed out twice as many tickets as there were room for in the club. This resulted in a line 400 people deep for two hours and near rioting at the entrance of Rain.
After hanging around The Palms for half an hour getting more bummed by the minute we finally got an extra special Sessions miracle (Thanks, Larry and Jessica) and the next thing we knew we were sitting next to Session owner Joel Gomez on the couch of his VIP suite looking down on a crowd of over 2,000 people.
Mix Master Mike got the party started and then around 1:30 AM Snoop Dogg came on and with reminded everyone why he sells so much music.
The New York-based private equity firm of Goode Partners LLC has announced that they are taking a minority investment in Rick Alden’s Skullycandy action electronics company.
We are thrilled to be part of the Skullcandy team and growth plan. Rick Alden and Jeremy Andrus have assembled a truly dynamic and knowledgeable team to accelerate the Skullcandy® brand worldwide. They have clearly leveraged their experience and knowledge of the global action sport marketplace to position the Skullcandy and 2XL brands for mainstream success”, said David Oddi, Partner of Goode Partners.
And, not surprisingly, Rick Alden is excited about getting more money. Why wouldn’t he be?
We’ve been meaning to check in with Rick Alden for a tour of SkullCandy’s, Utah headquarters for a while now, but KarmaloopTV beat us to it so we don’t have to. And that’s the kind of work we like best.
