While we were hanging out at the Converse Coastal Carnage bowl it appears some pretty amazing surfing went down at the US Open of Surfing today if Dane Reynolds Round of 48, Heat 8 score of 17.43 was any indication.
“It was fun out there,” Reynolds said. “I kind of just sat off to the left of everyone and took it easy. I didn’t really get any waves in the beginning and Kolohe got an 8 in the beginning for a small wave, so I knew if you were to get a set wave, anything you did was going to be a good score. That 9.33 was really important, I was looking pretty bad in the beginning and that definitely turned the heat for me.”
Proving it’s not all MMA and rally car driving at FUEL TV these days, the action cable network announced today that they will run live coverage of the surf, skate, and BMX finals from the NIke US Open of Surfing on Sunday August 7, 2011 beginning at 1:30 PM PST.
“The 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing is surfing’s biggest and most-watched event,” says Scott Paridon, FUEL TV’s VP of Production and Development. “It’s an honor to be the primary television partner and provide astonishing coverage of the various competitions throughout the entire weekend.”

The 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing just released the line up for the music portion of the enormous summer bash in Huntington Beach August 4-6, 2011 and it looks damn good.
This year’s musical line-up is a representation of today’s youth culture featuring headlining sets by psych-pop rockers MGMT, platinum-selling rockers Jimmy Eat World and Swedish electro/rock sensations The Sounds. The series will also include sets by the most buzzed about names emerging on the music scene this year: Surfer Blood and Dead Country.
Sure, Jimmy Eat World and MGMT are great and all, but we’re looking most forward to seeing Surfer Blood on Saturday, August 6, 2011. Follow the jump for more details. [click to continue…]
To promote the launch of his new KA-One shoe from ConverseKenny Anderson kickflipped into a nose manual in LA and didn’t stop until he got to Las Vegas, or at least that’s the hook to the film LA to Vegas.
We can say this: Kenny spent like a year on his front wheels for this one (even ding some skateboard towing behind a bus to show how tough he is). Watch and you’ll see what we mean. . . For more info on how Converse is launching this shoe follow the jump. [click to continue…]
In the last minutes of Ben Hatchell’s jam heat at the 2010 Converse Costal Carnage he stepped off and felt his knee twist the wrong way. At first he couldn’t even get out of the bowl. Someone had to reach down and pull him out.
After walking it off he dropped right back in again. On his way toward the cradle announcer Brian Shaefer mentioned that he would give Hatchell $100 for a front blunt in the over-vert section of the bowl and as soon as he’d said it Ben was up in the cradle on his back trucks and popping right back in frontside. Like it was nothing. But that’s how he rolled the entire day.
From the stands it was pretty obvious that while Ben Raybourne, Tom Remillard, Ryan Reyes, David Loy, and Jaws were throwing down some of the fastest lines, no one really came close to Hatchell. Later, up in the VIP with an ice pack wrapped to his knee we asked him if he was okay. Counting his $100 bills he looked up and said, “I hope so.”
