Pro-Tec Pool Party: Observe And Report

by The Editors on May 17, 2009

We spent most of the day at the 2009 Pro-Tec Pool Party at The Vans Skatepark at The Block in The City of Orange, California and when we think back there was so much mind blowing skateboarding that it all became a bit of a blur that went a little like this (click here for some photos):

Grind, snake, grind, mumble, mumble, Tony Alva, yeah, Tony Alva, Chris Miller, Bucky Lasek, near-miss, near-miss, Captain and Casey dressed a pool boys, Red in a mirror-shaded speedo, loud, loud, loud, Steve Van Doren flipping burgers, Steve Alba stretching, huge air, Dave Duncan on the mic and we can’t understand a word, Steve Luther staring Conversations, a girl skating in a skirt, winks from Rob Brink, Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins all grown up, Doug Paladini shaking hands, T-Mag, Bryce Kanights, Joel Gomez, Daily Habit Director Jen Goodman, Chris Overholser on the move, Geoff Rowley lurking, Jamey Stone on a cane, Christian Hosoi and his over 30 fans, that Pedro Barros kid wrecks this place, Dave Carnie’s weird beard, Ashton Maxfield sans glasses, consultant Mike Chantry, proud dad Dennis Jenson, Mark Waters and Bob Schmeltzer, the evasively ethereal Vans_66, Bob Burnquist and his roller bag, a Hi-Def backstage tour, Carleton Curtis, Dan Maiman, and John Stouffer, Danny Kass wandering the mall in bright colors, Desiree Astorga on a curb, Rockstar on ice, kids running the park, and reports of Mos Def.

We do know a couple things: one, no one skates the combi with more power and style than Chris Miller, and two, with the way Bucky Lasek rolls this place he will keep winning The Pool Party until he doesn’t want to win it anymore.

Poolpartyflyer

For the past four years the Pro-Tec Pool party has snuck up on us so steathily that we’ve missed it every time. This year we’re planning on sneaking back a little. We’re going to the Vans park on May 16, 2009 to catch all that tile cracking action in person. If that plan fails, at least we have a back-up: watch the whole thing in HD on Fuel TV.

Upland Skatepark Finally Re-Opens

by The Editors on March 28, 2017

The Upland Skatepark, which has been closed since November 2016 thanks to what the City of Upland calls “crime and safety issues,” finally reopened in mid March 2017, according to a story in the Daily Bulletin.

Professional skateboarder Steve Alba, a Rancho Cucamonga resident who helped design the 15-year-old park, had been a vocal advocate for its immediate reopening on behalf of the skate park patrons. “I’m just very happy that they opened it finally,” Alba said by phone. “I commend the city and the Police Department for helping clean the park out. They’ve done a great job.”

Pro-Tec Helmets even kicked in 20 helmets to be used at the park on an honor system. It’s good to see a great park back in action.

The Leines Brothers Have Nothing To Prove

by The Editors on September 5, 2014

When Celtek founders Bjorn and Erik Leines decided to make a snowboard movie they wanted to do something different.

Instead of rider parts you’ll uncover what riding is like in two distinctive locations; Minnesota / The Midwest and UT / The Rocky Mountains. Nothing to Prove will show you what it’s like to ride with your friends and support them whether they are doing a mellow powder turn or airing over a 5 story roof-to-roof gap. Hi-Fives, hangouts, hospital visits and sessions all have one thing in common..community. It was only natural that Erik and Bjorn called on the CELTEK team to ride with and be featured throughout this movie.

The movie will be released online in pieces during September, but will also be on tour compete. For all the details, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

by The Editors on February 7, 2013

Vans UsopenThose who thought the US Open of Surfing would simply drift on into oblivion following Nike Inc.’s withdrawal from Huntington Beach, California are sorely mistaken. Vans announced today (February 7, 2013) that it has signed a three-year partnership with IMC to be the title sponsor of the world’s largest surfing event.

“Vans and IMG have been partners for the better part of two decades. Being able to continue this relationship via such an iconic platform, in our own backyard, is simply a perfect fit,” says Doug Palladini, Vans’ Vice President of Marketing. “We are really looking forward to bringing the entire surf and skate industry back to the US Open, leading by working with all of our peers, and inspiring a whole new generation of action sports fans. As we continue to grow our role in surfing, the US Open and the City of Huntington Beach afford us one of youth culture’s most powerful events to share our spirit of Off the Wall with millions of people. ”

Looks like the US Open of Surfing is in good hands. The event runs July 20 – 28, 2013 in Huntington Beach, California. For the official word from Vans, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
