Car Plows Into Crowd Near Vans’ SXSW Venue

by The Editors on March 13, 2014

14austin-TJH3-superJumboLast night an possibly drunk driver fleeing police crashed his car into a crowd of people in Austin, Texas directly in front of The Mohawk, home this week to the SXSW House of Vans At The Mohawk. It was just after 12:30 AM (March 13, 2014) and fans were cued up outside for a Tyler, The Creator live show.

Two people where killed and 23 people were injured, according to a story in the New York Times.

The Austin police chief, Art Acevedo, told reporters that officers on the lookout for drunken drivers had tried to pull the motorist over about 12:30 a.m. at a service station near the clubs and other venues that were hosting events related to the annual cultural and technology festival. . . But the driver suddenly sped off, Chief Acevedo said, heading the wrong way down Ninth Street, a one-way street in downtown Austin, before turning onto Red River Street, where he rammed through a police barricade and struck several vehicles, including a moped and a taxi, in addition to hitting the pedestrians. A police officer stationed at the barricade narrowly avoided injury.

Stance’s Erica Yary was nearby when the accident happened. “Witnessed the worst thing I’ve ever seen tonight,” Yary said in an Instagram post. “If you pray, please pray for the deceased and the families of those injured and killed tonight. I don’t why this person plowed through dozens of people, but they destroyed many lives tonight. I’m so lucky my coworkers/friends and I were at a safe distance.”

The as-yet-unnamed driver of the car attempted to flee on foot but was caught and tasered. According to the Times, the driver will likely be charged with “capital murder charges.”

According to sources no Vans employees were injured in the accident, but our thoughts are with those injured and the family and friends of the two people who were killed.

by The Editors on October 21, 2013

The 2014 collection will include an exclusive 20th Anniversary capsule, complete with V-66 boot, jacket and socks. And finally, Vans will release, “Twenty Years: Off the Wall, On the Snow”, a definitive retrospective film on Vans Snow by respected snowboarding filmmaker Mike Hatchett of Standard Films. . . . Transforming what were then glorified duck boots into functional designs, Vans set out to deliver comfortable, performance-driven snow boots that optimized the mountain experience but still looked and felt like your favorite skate shoes.

Vans Shuts Orlando Skatepark Ahead Of Dozers

by The Editors on January 25, 2012

Vans Orlando Park Thank You 1The Vans Skatepark in Orlando, Florida celebrated one last Steve Van Doren grill and Tony Trujillo and Omar Hassan skate session on Friday, January 20, 2012, before the bull dozers roll in and remove the entire mall, according to a post on the Vans site.

After 10 magical years in our skatepark in Orlando we are sad to have to say goodbye. The mall that we occupied for the past decade is being leveled to the ground to build…another mall. . . All of the wooden ramps were broken down over the weekend with the wood and Skatelite being divvied up between The Skatepark of Tampa, a number of local area skateparks as well as being being driven up to our House of Vans in Brooklyn for a facelift and resurfacing.

We’re glad Vans stuck with it as long as they did and they found good homes for the ramps.

Vans Triple Crown Of Surfing: Flat To Fat

by The Editors on November 28, 2011

Pancho64

After weeks of flat and mostly small surf for the first jewel of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, surfers got a faste of North Shore juice as the $250,000 Vans World Cup of Surfing kicked off its first day of competition yesterday (November 27, 2011) at Sunset Beach in 10 to 12 foot surf. Pancho Sullivan explains:

“Every time you think you’ve got this wave figured out, it humbles you,” said Sullivan, 38. “It takes a lot of time and dedication to the break and your equipment, to surf well here. The adrenaline you get as you come towards the inside bowl, the wave is warbling and you just have no idea what it’s going to do. I think that’s why we all surf: that excitement of the unknown. Sunset delivers that on all levels. It is a tough wave.

Today, Sunny Garcia will face off against women’s ASP World Champion and Vans Triple Crown wildcard Carissa Moore. For the official word, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Vans Teases The Tablets With OTW TV

by The Editors on October 4, 2011

Vans Otw IpadWhile we still don’t believe we’ve ever seen anyone under 45 using an iPad in the wild (fie to you obnoxious moms using iPads to snap photos of your kids at the beach), apparently Vans has. Why else would they put the time and effort into creating their new Off the Wall TV iPad app? Here’s what they say about it:

Off the Wall TV iPad app, delivers Vans’ offthewall.tv video network of exclusive, original action sports, music, art and street culture programming to millions of iPad users around the world. . . [users are] now able to enjoy offthewall.tv anywhere with the easy to use app.

The app (which is free in the iTunes store) features all the content from the offthewall.tv website. So, the next time you’re over at you aunt’s house, grab her iPad and load this thing up. It’s probably pretty cool. Not that we’d know.
