Kelly Slater (and Hamster) On Natural High

by The Editors on May 30, 2019

Kelly Slater talks about how nothing good comes from using drugs and alcohol. Oddly, the hamster perched lightly on his right shoulder doesn’t say a whole lot. It, like us, must be in total agreement with everything Mr. Slater says.

Kelly Slater Likes Beer Money

by The Editors on February 1, 2018

Health-minded, recently vegan, seemingly ageless, best-surfer-of-all-time Kelly Slater is reportedly appearing in an advertisement for a major label beer brand that will run during the 2018 Super Bowl (a previously popular televised event where beer ads are separated by footage of large men repeatedly crashing into each other while trying to move a ball across a lawn).

We’re speculating that he’s appearing in the ad (which also includes sporting stars that we didn’t recognize) as part of a sales play to get said beer company to sponsor events produced by a privately owned entertainment company specializing in event and online streamed content production (mostly surfing sport) that Mr. Slater is involved with.  But we have no knowledge of any such deals. What we did find entertaining was Mr. Slater rationalizing his appearance in the ad when questioned about it on Surfer.com.

I think everyone knows I don’t drink a lot, but I don’t mind a beer here and there, especially after a long day of surfing.. . . When somebody stands for something, people expect everything to perfectly align in that direction at all times. But I once drank a beer in a barrel in Tahiti in a heat. So I think people do understand that I have a beer from time to time. It’s just something culturally that goes along with the celebration of a win or competition or a long day doing something. Obviously anything done in excess is not a good thing, but I think a beer goes along with celebration.

And there it is. Kelly likes beer just enough to be in a commercial.

Kelly Slater: Ouch, My Foot Is Broken

by The Editors on July 16, 2017

Man down, man down! Seems things aren’t all grand at the piss beer open in South Africa.
We were sad to see that the Great One had a little trouble in the barrel. Apparently,
these things happen to the best of them.

You ever folded your entire foot backwards? If you try it sometime, this is what it might look like. I pulled into a barrel this morning and the whitewash bounced the board back into my foot as I hit the closeout, taking all the pressure into the metatarsals. Kinda like smashing my foot with a big hammer as hard as I can. Sorta feels like I’m giving birth out of my foot right now! I’m guessing surgery and 6 week holiday is in order. Not looking forward to 30 hour flight home before surgery though. Ouch! It sucks but so many people deal with such horrible things around this world everyday that a broken foot is pretty minor in the scheme of things. Sometimes a bad thing is a good thing. I’ll make the best of my time off. #ThatsGonnaLeaveAMark #INeedElephantTranquilizers

Kelly Slater’s New $7.8 Million Haleiwa Home

by The Editors on May 15, 2017

Kelly Slater reportedly just snapped up another house on the North Shore. This $7.8 million gem is located in Haliewa, according to a story in the Pacific Business News.

The 7-bedroom, 5-bathroom estate is located at 61-785 Papailoa Road, and includes one building and pool situated on 23,889-square feet of land. The ocean-front land was last purchased in 2000 for $1.85 million, and the property was built in 2001.

It’s not in Lemoore, California, but it looks like a very nice place to stay every now and again. Click here for all the photos.

Kelly Slater Wins Number 55

by The Editors on August 23, 2016

Kelly Slater celebrates winning the Billabong Pro Tahiti for the fifth time in his career and earns the A.I. Award.

Kelly Slater remains an inspiration to all middle-aged men. He proved that he’s old, but he can still whoop the best kids in the world at Teahupo’o. In this case the kid was 2 John Florence.

“When I look back that will for sure be one of the best wins I have ever had,” said Slater. “To have John John [Florence] in the Final is a dream for me. It is no secret that I am towards the tail-end of my career. John John and Gabriel [Medina] are on their way up and those guys are just monsters. John John is all of our favorite surfers, so I want to see how many heats I can get with him before I am done and to have him out here where he and Gabriel are the favorites. This is a really special time for me. I am stoked.”

The surf world is still undecided on Slater’s early round”perfect heat,” and while we tend to line up with those who believed his second wave was a 9.49 or so, there is still no doubt that Slater remains the King of Teahupo’o. Kelly Slater Wins 2016 Volcom Pipe Pro

by The Editors on February 3, 2016

We didn’t watch much of the 2016 Volcom Pipe Pro held January 27 – February 2, 2016, but we were lucky enough to catch the most stacked finals we think we’ve ever seen at Pipeline yesterday (February 2, 2016): Kelly Slater, JOB, Bruce Irons, and Makai McNamara.

At first we were wondering why 2 John Florence wasn’t in the mix, too, but Makai’s first wave (and his complete commitment to the task) made us realize we could get by without Mr. Blue Moon in a Pipeline final. Oh, and Kelly Slater’s surfing was pretty near perfect, which is always good to see.

For the official word from Volcom (including results) please follow the jump.

Kelly Slater’s Central Valley Cesspool

by The Editors on December 22, 2015

We know this is late, but now that the backwash has settled and all the details have been leaked on Kelly Slater’s epically perfect Lemoore, California wave pool (thanks, Swellnet and Reddit) the big question becomes: would you surf in Kelly’s foamy, brown water?

We’d definitely stop each time we made a run up I-5 and get thrown over the falls a couple times even if it was in a pond filled with industrial farming run off because the wave is just that beautiful.

Kelly Slater Calls Out SeaWorld

by The Editors on June 9, 2015

Sea-World-Of-HurtTomorrow, June 10, 2015 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater will call out SeaWorld during the company’s online annual meeting by submitting a question on behalf of PETA. Here’s the question that he is submitting:

My name is Kelly Slater, and I’m here on behalf of PETA. The veil has been lifted on SeaWorld. All the ads in the world won’t change what the public now knows to be true: that the company imprisons highly intelligent, emotionally complex, social animals in tiny, barren concrete tanks, which leads to aggression and disease. SeaWorld is experiencing declining attendance and revenue, and dozens of companies, including Southwest Airlines, Panama Jack, and Mattel, have recently ended partnerships with SeaWorld. As a professional surfer, I’m lucky and privileged to be able to spend the majority of my time in the ocean—it’s the place where I feel most at home, and thus, I feel an obligation to protect that which I have a voice in influencing. Please, tell us, when will SeaWorld allow the animals it holds captive to return to their home—the ocean—by retiring them to a seaside sanctuary? And wouldn’t this at least be viewed, if nothing else, as a public relations win for you? By righting the wrongs you have committed in the name of corporate profit for so many years, you may actually be able to recoup some of the respect that has been lost in the eyes of the public and work toward an end to the problem of animal suffering. Thank you.

We couldn’t say it better ourselves.

Kelly Slater To Surf Oakley Lowers Pro

by The Editors on April 17, 2015

Slater-Ellis1

From April 28 – May 2, 2015 The Oakley Lowers Pro will post up at California’s Trestles and bring with them some of the best surfers in the world (even though it’s not a major content production event) thanks to six wildcard positions. One of them will be Kelly Slater.

“Lowers is a special wave and it’s been a pivotal place for me in my career,” said Kelly Slater, 11-time World Champion. “The wave is a great canvas for experimentation, in both equipment and approach, and I’m looking forward to surfing it with just a couple of guys out at the Oakley Lowers Pro. Hope we get some swell for it.”

It also means a little more star power for a privately owned entertainment company specializing in event and online streaming content production. The other five wildcard surfers include Nate Yeomans, Kanoa Igarashi, Jack Robinson, Parker Coffin, and Evan Geiselman. Not a bad way to get to see all these guys surf. Kelly Slater Joins Burton At Pottery Barn

by The Editors on January 30, 2015

Pbteen-Kelly-Slater-LineBurton Snowboards employee Kelly Slater has decided that he’d like to get in on a little interior design money from Pottery Barn Teen just like Burton has for the past few years. Here’s what he’s doing, according to Furniture Today.

The line of furniture, bedding, lighting, wall art, and “decorative accessories” will be reportedly made with sustainable materials and recycles fabrics like Forest Stewardship Council certified wood and rugs made with recycled fabrics and bedding using 100% organic cotton.

“I’m really excited to be working with PBteen on this project,” said Slater. “While they’re not part of the endemic surf market, I’m honored that PBteen has seen me as someone who can help a broader audience understand the need to use recycled, repurposed and organic materials. . . “Global conservation is a focal point of the capsule collection and it falls right in line with the change and direction I’m working towards, on a professional and personal basis. In collaborating with PBteen, we are creating a subtle and natural feel with this collection — something that has an authentic appeal for teens and their parents alike.”

As we’ve said before if your mom’s going kit out your room to impress her friends it might as well be cool stuff. And if the Kelly Slater product is as nice as the Burton stuff is it’s going to be nice for your room. Now go clean up and make space for Kelly’s stuff.
