Post Olympic News Lister Time

by The Editors on February 14, 2022

It’s newsies time. Obviously, this list is overloaded with Olympic content since that’s what snowboarding is up to right now. And Shaun White is the biggest news from Chinaland. Shaun, and the terrible judging. But, oddly, few outlets wrote about that. Censorship? Probably not, but you know the journalists who are visiting China and hope to stay and/or return to the country don’t want to upset the PRC media watchers. Click the link for the list. And get going. This is enough to make it look like you’re working for the rest of the afternoon!

White, Clark, Anderson On Olympic Charge

by The Editors on February 6, 2017

Last weekend, Mammoth Mountain, California hosted the first top on the 2017 US Grand Prix Snowboard Tour. It was the first qualifier for the 2018 PyeongChang, South Korea Winter Olympics (yes, it’s that time already). Shaun White and Kelly Clark braved high winds (just check out those flags) and weather delays to win the halfpipe. Shaun seemed pretty happy after his worst X Games performance ever.

“I’m feeling great,” he said.  “I got out here and the weather wasn’t good—we were waiting, waiting, waiting and it was tough to sit around thinking about what you want to do. I didn’t have the nicest contest at X (Games) so I was excited to come here and be the normal me—put some runs down.”

In Slopestyle (yes, it’s also in the Olympics) Red Gerard and Jamie Anderson came out on top. For all the details from the USSA, please follow the jump.

#JunkFoodKills Championship Results

by The Editors on December 15, 2014

Chaz Win Dt

Breckenridge Resort has always been the kick off spot for a new season of competitive snowboarding and while the junk food merchants of death have co-opted the event in their every pressing drive to obesify America, the snowboarders have continued to use Breckenridge in December to show the world that they haven’t slacked off during the summer, and that they’re hungrier than ever to be the best in the world.

Jamie Anderson, Kelly Clark, and Chas Guldemond (pictured above) won their events and reminded the young bucks (and the world) that they’re not ready to step aside just yet. So congrats to them and to anyone who could sit through the Quiznos, Doritos, video game and caffeinated sugar water ads long enough to watch the whole contest.

For the complete results from the first stop of the #JunkFoodKills mouse dissolving, caffeinated, carbonated high fructose corn syrup winter tour please follow the jump. [click to continue…]

2014 US Open Of Snowboarding Recap

by The Editors on March 10, 2014

Some spectators even stopped by at one point during the contest.

It’s Monday morning. Time to review all the snow shredding we missed over the weekend. Namely, the Burton Mini US Open of Snowboarding from Vail, Colorado. Apparently some amazing aerial stunts went down.

Mark McMorris was scored correctly (unlike in Sochi) and he won the slopestyle and showed absolutely no bitterness toward the Olympic games at all. . . .

“To end my season at an event by snowboarders for snowboarders with back-to-back wins is really cool,” said McMorris. “There’s no bobsled team or figure skating team at the Open – it’s just a bunch of snowboarders who all share the same love for riding. And it’s really cool for me to end my season at such a legendary event.”

Jamie Anderson followed her Olympic gold medal up with a another win in Vail.

“I love this event,” said Anderson. “I love that Burton has created a stage for us to really show what snowboarders are capable of. To have it open to all riders to get involved in is definitely huge and something that I wish more events incorporated. I love the Rockies and Vail, and being here supporting the Open is so fun.”

In the u-jumpy jump Kelly Clark continued her domination of US Open halfpiping with her 7th win.

“The US Open means a ton to me,” said Clark. “I grew up nine miles away from the US Open. It really holds a near and dear place in my heart. If I could pick a contest to win, it would be this one. I’m really happy I was able to put down my run today.”

Taylor Gold won the mens event (Shaun White was busy playing late night talk shows with his rock band Bad Things).

“Coming into the event, I wasn’t really putting a lot of expectations on myself,” said Gold. “It was a relief to have the Olympic cycle over with. Just having fun here was my main goal, so walking away with this is beyond anything I expected.”

We watch about 10 minutes of the event and feel kind of badly about it. If you also missed it, go ahead and click here to watch all the replays. For the official word from Burton and the complete final results, please follow the jump. [click to continue…]

You’ll note that Louie Vito, Gretchen Bleiler, and Scotty Lago are not on the list. Here’s what the USSA coach has to say about those who made the team:

“We saw some amazing performances by these riders with a blend of veterans and newcomers landing next-level runs,” said USSA Head Slope and Halfpipe Coach Mike Jankowski. “To have nine of 11 spots come down to the final weekend of qualifying shows the true depth of U.S. Snowboarding.

Yeah, either that or the fact that 60 percent of the qualifying events were held on the “final weekend.” For the official word from the USSA follow the jump.

Shaun White Didn’t Win Pipe, Sat Out Slope

by The Editors on December 16, 2013

Greg Bretz Mens Snowboard Pipe Finals Ion Mountain Championships-1-3

This weekend officially kicked of the competitive snowboarding “I-want-to-go-to the-Olympics” season with the flame retardant, mouse dissolving, caffeinated, carbonated high fructose corn syrup event at Breckenridge, Colorado December 12-15, 2013.

It was the weekend of Shaun White’s nemeses. Thanks to an ankle injury in the halfpipe final (again) Shaun White finished second behind a hard charging Greg Bretz (pictured above). Then White decided to sit out the slope style event which was taken by Olympic Gold Medal favorite Mark McMorris. It would appear Shaun is already plotting out a dramatic Olympic storyline.

On the women’s side Torah Bright edged Kelly Clark in the pipe (Elena Hight didn’t land a run, sadly and Hannah Teter didn’t make the final finishing 16th in qualifying). Jamie Anderson did her usual by dominating the Slopestyle. For the complete, easy to read results, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

by The Editors on May 23, 2013

octagon_logoEvery surfer needs someone whose looking out for them and Sebastian Zietz just went with about as big a someone as a surfer can get by signing with Octagon. There he will join other athletes like Michael Phelps, Apolo Anto Ono, Alana Blanchard, Mitchie Brusco, and Jamie Anderson just to name a few.

“Seabass is one of the top young surfers in the sport who carries movie-star charisma that is fresh and appealing to fans and sponsors,” said Amen Teter, Octagon’s Action Sports Director. “The sky is the limit for Seabass. He has the talent to compete and win big events on the ASP World Tour and a personality to match. We are excited about the opportunities to expand his profile.”

White & Clark Finish Burton Dream Halfpipe

by The Editors on March 3, 2013

Halfpipe judging is always suspect, but never more so when an amagingly talented new kid goes up against a well established halfpipe juggernaut like Shaun White. That’s what happened, apparently, in the second run of the 31st Burton US Open Snowboarding Championship at Vail, Colorado on Saturday, March 2, 2013 when just crowed World Snowboard Tour Halfpipe Champion Ayumu Hirano, 14, went up against White in the second run. White ended up 8.18 points ahead of Hirano even though many people agree that Hirano’s run was one of the best they’ve seen. White, however, had his say in the second run.

Coming off of his 6th consecutive X Games win, Shaun White put together an unbeatable second run at the US Open with a top score of 95.58, earning him his fifth US Open men’s half pipe victory – in addition to his two US Open men’s slope style titles. His winning trick combination included a backside air, frontside 1080 double cork stale fish grab, Cab 1080 double cork melon grab, frontside 540 stale fish grab, backside 1260 double McTwist mute grab, to a frontside 1260 double cork stale fish grab. Shaun also claimed the top five highest trick scores of the day. . . “It was incredible to get my fifth US Open half pipe title in Vail, and hands down, this is the best pipe of the year,” said Shaun White. “I’m pretty happy to end my season with a win at the US Open.”

Hirano’s second run included a Method Air, Frontside 1080 Tail Grab, Cab 1080 Nose Grab , Frontside 900 Tail Grab, Backside 540 Mute Grab, Frontside 1080 Double Cork Indy Grab. So the truth is, while the judges may have been a little off (or a lot) on the numbers, they were not off on the placing order.

For the women, Kelly Clark won her sixth US Open title over For the official word from Burton and video of Hirano’s second place run follow the jump. [click to continue…]
