After weeks of rumors and speculation surrounding the health of Burton Snowboards founder Jake Burton Carpenter, Burton PR has finally today (June 24, 2015) released an official health update. It’s good news considering what Jake and his family have been through over the past two months.

Right after the 2015 Burton US Open in March, Jake Burton, Founder & Chairman of Burton Snowboards, was diagnosed with a type of Guillan-Barre Syndrome called Miller Fisher Syndrome. Miller Fisher is an extremely rare disorder that results in the body’s own immune system attacking the nerves. Jake had a very severe case that caused temporary paralysis of his entire body, so he was put on full life support in the ICU for nearly two months at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire.

He is now out of the hospital and making progress toward full and complete recovery. For the official word from Burton, please follow the jump.

Burton Opens New Las Vegas Outlet Store

by The Editors on May 15, 2015

La-Tr-Lvn-Las-Vegas-Shopping-Premium-Outlets-2-001

Forget about paying full price for your new Burton Snowboard gear next fall. This summer (while you’re partying in a urine filled Las Vegas pool) make a run to the Las Vegas Premium Outlet Stores and hit up Burton’s newest company outlet store. It opened yesterday (Thursday, May 14, 2015).

Other new stores now open include AG Adriano Goldschmied, AllSaints, American Eagle Outfitters, Bally, Canali, Catimini, CH Carolina Herrera, Citizen, Clarins, Dunhill, Furla, Helmut Lang, John Varvatos, Pandora, Rag & Bone, Under Armour, Vera Bradley and Vilebrequin.

Hit ’em up. We’re guessing there will be a lot of their new camping gear on sale this summer (if they have any employees left to sell it to you). Not surprisingly, there’s also a new Cheesecake Factory in the same mall. It’s Las Vegas’ fourth.

Kelly Slater Joins Burton At Pottery Barn

by The Editors on January 30, 2015

Pbteen-Kelly-Slater-LineBurton Snowboards employee Kelly Slater has decided that he’d like to get in on a little interior design money from Pottery Barn Teen just like Burton has for the past few years. Here’s what he’s doing, according to Furniture Today.

The line of furniture, bedding, lighting, wall art, and “decorative accessories” will be reportedly made with sustainable materials and recycles fabrics like Forest Stewardship Council certified wood and rugs made with recycled fabrics and bedding using 100% organic cotton.

“I’m really excited to be working with PBteen on this project,” said Slater. “While they’re not part of the endemic surf market, I’m honored that PBteen has seen me as someone who can help a broader audience understand the need to use recycled, repurposed and organic materials. . . “Global conservation is a focal point of the capsule collection and it falls right in line with the change and direction I’m working towards, on a professional and personal basis. In collaborating with PBteen, we are creating a subtle and natural feel with this collection — something that has an authentic appeal for teens and their parents alike.”

As we’ve said before if your mom’s going kit out your room to impress her friends it might as well be cool stuff. And if the Kelly Slater product is as nice as the Burton stuff is it’s going to be nice for your room. Now go clean up and make space for Kelly’s stuff.

Burton’s Zach Aller Wins Burton Rail Days

Burton Snowboards and Mini threw a massive street rail contest in Tokyo last weekend. It was the 4th annual Burton Rail Days and more than 5,000 people reportedly came out to see the action going down.

In the end, it was Zach Aller (CAN) who took home $15,000 with a first place finish. Aller’s first run of frontside board slide, backside 180 to board slide on the transfer, and 50-50 on the ledge to wall ride was good enough to get the win. In second place was Jaeger Bailey (USA) with a 50-50, 270 to board slide, and 50-50 on the ledge. And finally, Yuma Abe (JPN) took third-place honors with a wall ride 540. Zach Aller not only came away with his first Burton Rail Days title, but also had one of the more impressive stories of the week. After a last-minute opening in the competition, Aller was contacted with an invitation, just hours before he jumped on a plane to Tokyo to compete.

Burton Pulls Product From SIA Show

by The Editors on November 3, 2014

Burton LogoIt appears we’re not the only ones who have grown tired of the SIA Trade Show in Denver. Burton Snowboards announced today that, aside from a booth for Anon accessories and two others for Riglet Parks and the Chill Program they will not be showing any product inside the 2015 SIA Show at the Denver Convention Center this January. Rather than sit in with the rest of the snowboard companies and be under the thumb of the convention center and SIA, Burton has opted to do their own fully immersive, 24-hour-a-day brand “activation” at Denver’s huge night club City Hall.

From January 28th-31st, Burton will transform City Hall into an authentic brand experience where retailers can enjoy three days of winter 2016 collection showings, around-the-clock hospitality, entertainment and more. . . “At Burton, we’re always challenging ourselves to look at things differently, to take a new approach, to innovate – whether it’s with our products, marketing or activations,” said Sasha Dietschi-Cooper, SVP of North American Sales. “So this year at SIA, we’re going to service our retail partners in a whole new way with an elevated presence in Denver. From ramping up the scope of product and brand stories we can show to increasing the flexibility of when dealers can view the line, our intention is to better service and inspire our retailers.”

Burton Goes In-House For New CEO

by The Editors on May 14, 2014

Burton-Ceo-MikereesIt’s been four years since Laurent Potdevin resigned as CEO of Burton Snowboards. And since then, Jake and Donna Carpenter have been running the business themselves while they conducted a search for a new CEO. That search has apparently ended as the company announced today the promotion of COO Mike Rees to the position of CEO of Burton Snowboards.

“Four years ago when I got my old job back as Burton’s CEO, my goal was to get the company headed in the right direction, build up our leadership team and establish a clear plan for the long-term future of the brand,” said Jake. “Looking back, we’ve accomplished these goals and have a solid foundation in place. Now it’s time to turn over the day-to-day tasks of running Burton to a new CEO. Our entire Board of Directors, our Executive Team, Donna and myself trust that Mike is the right person for the job. He has the experience, skills and leadership qualities to take our vision and run with it. And I’ll still be around, giving product feedback, testing new gear, working with the creative crew and advising Mike.”

Rees obviously knows the business and that’s good. For the official word from Burton, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Burton’s Asia Made US Olympic Uniforms

by The Editors on December 9, 2013

2014-Burton-Olympic-Uniform-Nyc-Launch-Event-1

It didn’t take long after Burton Snowboards announced their designs for the 2014 Olympic snowboard uniforms for the company to be forced into responding to stories about how the uniforms were “not made in the United States of America,” according to a story on Fox News. The jackets are apparently made in Japan and here’s the rest:

“The fabric of the competition fleece was woven in Italy, and the technical and waterproof corduroy pant fabric was developed in Taiwan and sewn in Vietnam,” the [Burton] statement continued. “Next, we turned to our longstanding, trusted vendors in China to produce several of the accessories.”

Burton was quick to point out that most of the snowboards ridden by the Burton athletes in the 2013 Sochi Olympics will be handmade in Burlington, Vermont. So if you think you’re going to be riding the same board Shaun White rides in the Olympics, think again. The one you ride will likely be made by one of Burton’s “longstanding, trusted vendors” offshore. Not that this should surprise anyone. . . at all.
