Friction Goes High Tech With FaceTime

by The Editors on December 22, 2011

Friction LogoNew Smyrna Beach, Florida’s Friction surf and skate shop is using Apple FaceTime technology to “bridge the gap” between online and brick and mortar shopping. Every day, between 12 – 7 PM EST, customers with an Apple device can speak directly with sales people on the floor.

“I’d been implementing social media and in-store / online connections for about a year at my other store before opening Friction,” Friction partner and executive buyer Evan Rebadow says. “To me this is the evolution of a concept where small boutique stores like ours can compete online by offering personal interaction. It’s one thing to read about a surf board on a static website, it’s something completely different to be able to dial us up on your iPhone from anywhere you have service and talk to us one on one about what kind of surf you’re going to be riding it in and how it performs for your skill level.

Seems like a phone call would be just as effective, but then that wouldn’t have caught our attention. Follow the jump for the official word. [click to continue…]

While the ASP Elite surfers were battling away at Bells for the Rip Curl Pro, the juniors were in Cardiff, California for the Rob Machado Seaside Pro Junior. When the contest was done on Saturday, April 23, 2011 it was Evan Geiselman and Lakey Peterson who took the top spots a the 4-Star event.

“It was kind of a sluggish final for me and I think for the rest of the competitors and I was pretty tired out there, but I’m so happy to get a win and get some momentum going,” Geiselman said. “I’m not having the best year like last year so I’m so excited. I just want to thank my Mom for helping me out lately. She flew out here before the event and has been doing everything for me.”

Comically Small Waves At DNA Energy Pro Junior

by The Editors on April 2, 2011

Evan-Geiselman-Dna-Day-2 Edited-1

The photos from the ASP 1-Star DNA Energy Pro Junior event at the shark bite capital of the world New Smyrna Beach Inlet, Florida have been cracking us up on a daily basis. But they’re also reminding us of two other things: how hard core Florida surfers are and how lucky we are to have waves most of the year.

Seriously, look at this photo again. Either Evan Geiselman has grow 7 feet since we saw him last or that wave he’s on is about 10 inch tall. “Challenging conditions” for sure. [click to continue…]

Brett Simpson Snags 2nd US Open Title

by The Editors on August 9, 2010

Img 9227

If the entire ASP World Tour were held in Huntington Beach, California there is a very good chance that Brett Simpson could be the number one surfer in the world rather than down at 26 on the world rankings. Over the past two years he’s beaten nearly every one of the ASP’s top five surfers at the US Open. This year he downed a nine-time world champion and the current ASP number 1 in consecutive heats to take his second US Open of Surfing victory and a check for $100,000.

“It’s amazing to beat those guys,” Simpson said. “I guess this is my best chance to compete against those guys and I know the wave really well and I just go out there and stay confident. I know which waves score the best and that’s all you can do against those guys. . .“Jordy (Smith) has been getting quick starts, so I tried to go out there and get a decent start,” Simpson said. “I got a five, and it was a low scoring heat, but all the waves I caught I maximized. Jordy had that one wave, where if he pulled that air it could have been a different ballgame. That’s the risk you take to be rewarded and with the level these days, that’s where it’s at. I kind of stayed conservative and built my scores, but either way, a win is a win.”

After 2009’s epic surf it was sad to see the Huntington Pier return to it’s normal wave size for the finals. Jordy and Brett spent much of the heat just sitting on a flat sea hoping for a wave that would save them. Brett scored a 13.97, and all Jordy could muster was 8.33. But the crowd did not appear to care as they changed into the water to mob each surfer as they tried to get back up the beach. The final was not even close to spectacular, but it did put a cap on an amazing week of surfing at the 2010 US Open of Surfing.

Carissa Moore Wins 2010 US Open of Surfing

by The Editors on August 7, 2010

Carissa Moore 002

Today, mixed somewhere into a Southern California day filled with all manner of flying boards, Hawaii’s Carissa Moore confidently paddled out at the Huntington Beach Pier and put the vice to current ASP World Tour number two Sally Fitzgibbons. With several paddle battles to start the heat, Moore didn’t let up until the US Open of Surfing’s Woman’s Final horn blew and she had won the largest women’s prize purse in the history of surfing.

“I was pretty nervous because I only had two 4 point scores,” Moore said. “Sally (Fitzgibbons) is gnarly and is a great competitor and I knew when that last set came, if I didn’t get on it Sally would have gotten the score easily. I’m just so on top of the world right now, I’m so psyched. . . . “It is really amazing to win this event,” Moore said. “I just can’t even believe it right now. It just seems really surreal. That Final went by so fast and I wish I could have done some more surfing, but I’m just really stoked.”

Surf Contest In Sharky Waters

by The Editors on March 9, 2009

Landshark 800.Jpg

Last week the Volusia Couinty Council approved a surf contest for April at New Smyrna Beach, Florida’s shark infested waters. The sponsor? Jacksonville, Florida’s Landshark Lager.

Organizers say the Land Shark Spring Surfari Pro could attrack 2,000 visitors to the Ponce de Leon Inlet.

We’re not sure if this is funny, or dumb. According to the Orlando Sentinel April is peak shark bit month with “26 bites during the past decade that month.” Nice marketing hook.
