2012 NSSA Interscholastic State Championships

Nssa Champs LogoOn March 9, 2012 the NSSA State Championships kick off the NSSA’s seven event Championship schedule with a three-day tournament featuring top college, high school, and middle school teams being held on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach, California.

The NSSA’s version of March Madness is sure to be packed with hype, talented athletes and passionate team rivalries as the battle for State titles guarantees excitement and team spirit. Adding to the fervor, the competitors will be performing in surfing’s most prominent stadium at the pier‚s famous south side sandbars. Competition will commence on March 9th with the College Championships. Saturday, March 10th will begin with the High School Championships and then continue with remaining College preliminary rounds. The third and final day of the State Championships on March 11th will feature the Middle School Championships and finish off with all the State Championship finals.

(Huntington Beach, Ca ˆ March 7, 2012) ˆ March Madness will stretch beyond the basketball court when the Interscholastic State Championships presented by Nike kicks off the most intense and exciting four-month period in U.S. surfing. The State Championships is the first of seven events on the 2012 NSSA Championship schedule. The 3-day tournament featuring the west coast‚s top College, High School and Middle School teams will be held on the south side of Huntington Beach Pier March 9-11,

The NSSA’s version of March Madness is sure to be packed with hype, talented athletes and passionate team rivalries as the battle for State titles guarantees excitement and team spirit. The competition will also include individual divisions which will determine State Champion titles in College Mens, Womens and Longboard, High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Mens, Womens and Longboard and Middle School Boys, Girls and Longboard. The 2012 Interscholastic State Championships serves as the Regional qualifier for College, High School and Middle School teams to earn a bid to the 2012 National Interscholastic Championships June 14-17 at Salt Creek in Dana Point, California.

The reigning 2011 State Champions, San Diego State, San Clemente High School and Shorecliffs Middle School have dominated the top of the podium for three consecutive years. In individual competition, numerous State Champions are returning to defend titles and/or add more victories to their resume. On the College side, SDSU‚s Doug Van Mierlo won the College Mens State title in 2010. Erika Cook won the College Womens in 2009 for Saddleback but is now on the CSULB team. USC‚s Kaleigh Gilchrist won the High School Womens State title in 2009 for Newport Harbor and won the National High School Champinoships in 2010. Saddleback‚s Shaw Kobayashi was also a High School champion winning the State title in 2009 for San Clemente. UCLA freshman Taylor Pitz dominated the High School Womens State category for two years straight in 2010 and 2011 where she attended Laguna Beach High School and also claimed the National High School Women‚s title in 2011. 2011 National College Men‚s Champion Brent Reilly will be returning to action competing for Mira Costa. In the Longboard category, 2-time National Champion Kevin Osborne will aiming for his first State title in the Collegiate division competing for the UC Santa Barbara team.

In the High School division, San Clemente High School’s Breyden Taylor won the High School Junior Varsity State title in 2010 and the National High School Men‚s Varsity title in 2011. Tia Blanco won the State Girls crown for Shorecliffs Middle School in 2011 and will be competing on San Clemente‚s Varsity squad this year. Also competing for San Clemente are Josh Giddings and Casey Powell who claimed the Junior Varsity Men‚s State title and Junior Varsity State Longboard title respectively in 2011. Carlsbad High School‚s longboard surfer David Arganda won the State title in 2009 and will be attempting to add another victory to the list.

Team line ups for College surfing by ranking order are as follows: San Diego State Black, Saddleback, Mira Costa Red, UC Santa Barbara Gold, UC San Diego „A‰, UCLA, Point Loma „A‰, Cal State San Marcos „A‰, University of San Diego, San Diego State Red, Cal State Long Beach „A‰, USC, UC Santa Barbara Blue, Mira Costa White, UC San Diego „B‰, Cal State San Marcos „B‰, Point Loma „B‰, Cal State Long Beach „B‰.

Team line ups for High School Varsity surfing by ranking order are as follows: San Clemente, Edison, Newport Harbor, Huntington Beach, Mira Costa, Marina, San Dieguito, Carlsbad.

The Junior Varsity Championships will feature four schools. In ranking order the schools competing are: Huntington Beach, Edison, Marina, Newport Harbor.

The Middle School Championships at both the State and National level has been dominated by Shorecliffs who are seeking their seventh consecutive State title. The NSSA Interscholastic State Championships is proud to have support from Nike, Huntington Surf and Sport, Java Point, Surfing Magazine, Sex Wax, Vitaminwater and the Sugar Shack.

The NSSA Interscholastic State Championships presented by Nike is the first of seven events in the 2012 NSSA Championship Series. The 2012 Championship Series events include the State Championships at Huntington Beach Pier, the Hawaii Regional Championships at Kewalo Basin, Oahu, HI March 13-18; the East Coast Regional Championships at New Smyrna Beach Inlet, FL April 12-15; the NSSA Jr. Championships at Huntington Beach Pier, CA April 21; the West Coast Regional Championships at Huntington Beach Pier, CA May 17-20; the NSSA National Interscholastic Championships at Salt Creek June 14-17 and Huntington Beach Pier, CA June 26-July 3.
