Dave McCoy’s Mammoth Stories

by The Editors on January 9, 2014

Sixty years ago Dave McCoy got a permit to operate a ski area on Mammoth Mountain. Now, the 98-year-old icon tells a bit of the founding story. This edit is all skiing, but for Dave, we’ll run it anyway.

Mammoth Mountain was such a great place to grow up going to each winter. I remember the excitement as kids when we knew Warren Miller would be showing his latest film -and narrating it in person!

Dave McCoy is one heck of a man. As real a person as you’ll ever meet. I worked for him as a bright eyed 18y/o kid, who he took skiing i suppose, to know a bit more about who was working at the mountain.Back then he would stand in line in the cafeteria & pay for his food. A lot of the employees didn’t even know who he was. Little did I know then, forty years ago, what a great influence his character would have on me. Fabulous place he built with some of the best skiing anywhere, even though it has lost some of its charm & ruggedness to the hype & bs of others. I’ve side stepped up that ramp to chair 1 (in video) many times. Think it was there til mid 80’s?. Thanks again Dave.
