by The Editors on November 13, 2011

Jamie PierreThe 2011-12 snowboarding season has only just begun and already someone has died. Jamie Pierre, the professional skier who once set the world record for biggest cliff drop (255 feet), died today around 3 PM (Sunday, November 13, 2011) when an avalanche that he triggered near Utah’s Snowbird Resort swept him off a cliff, according to a story in the Deseret News.

According to a police statement, Pierre was killed Sunday after the slide swept him over a cliff in the South Chute area.

Pierre reportedly died from injuries he sustained during the fall and he was not buried in the slide. Snowbird resort is not scheduled to open until next week. Our thoughts are with Pierre’s family and friends.

Jamie was a good man and full of life . we used to ride together and i was his team manager for a couple years for a clothing company . he was wild and you had to watch yourself when you rode with him because you never knew when he would get a wild hair . he was insane and opened the door as far as what is possible with dropping big cliffs . i remember the last time he was in tahoe and we were having beers and loving life . he had those eyes that were bursting with excitement and life . one of the wildest dudes ever . i never met his family but all the love in the world goes out to them . jamie , you will be missed bro !

I had the pleasure of getting a “tour” of Snowbird from Jamie about 12yrs ago on a big dump. He was riding a board for the first time that year (and it was almost springtime)….to say the least, he shredded and hucked himself off of everything in sight…truly impressive. I had great views as I went around most of what he went over or through…on one occasion he talked me into a chute, as I rolled in i asked if there was anything bad in it, he replied “nah…(pause long enough for me to get going past the point of stopping)….I just wouldn’t turn if I were you!”

THoughts are out to his family and friends…
