Vans, The North Face Help VF Kick Ass

by The Editors on April 27, 2012

VfcorpVF Corp, the parent company of Vans, The North Face, and Reef announced “record first quarter revenues and earnings thanks in part to their acquisition of Timberland and Smartwool, but also because their outdoor group (the only part of the company we really even care about) did really, really, well.

Global revenues of The North Face® brand increased 14% during the quarter, with double-digit growth in both the Americas and internationally. Momentum continued in The North Face® brand’s direct-to-consumer business, where revenues grew more than 20% in the quarter. The Vans® brand achieved another quarter of very healthy growth, with global revenues rising 25% and strong increases in both its Americas and international businesses. The Vans direct-to-consumer business demonstrated solid results, with revenues rising by 18%.

Boom. As usual, Reef did not get so much as a mention in the quarterly numbers, and only showed up in the list of companies VF owns. That must be so motivating for the people at Reef. For the official word follow the jump. If you’re interested in the hard numbers click here. [click to continue…]

Suitors Bidding On Collective Brands

by The Editors on April 25, 2012

Logo CbiCollective Brands, the owner of zombie brands Airwalk, Vision Streetwear, and (sadly) Sims is reportedly up for sale, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.

The team, private-equity firm Golden Gate Capital and bootmaker Wolverine World Wide Inc., are competing in the last stretch of a months-long auction for Collective Brands, owner of Payless ShoeSource as well as brands including Keds, Stride Rite and Sperry Top-Sider, according to people familiar with the matter. . . The pair is dueling for the deal against South Korean conglomerate E-Land Group, these people said.

E-Land recently made a run at buying the LA Dogers. We’re not sure what any of this means other than maybe, just maybe, this deal will finally let the Airwalk, Vision, and Sims brands die in peace.

Snowboarder Bandit Hits Palm Springs

by The Editors on April 25, 2012

Snowbdr BndtSounds like the Snowboarder Bandit was running a little low on cash after a wild weekend two in Coachella and decided he needed to pick up a little more spending money at the BBVA Compass branch at (get this) 420 S. Palm Canyon Drive, according to a story on MyDesert.com.

He walked into the bank branch, presented a clerk with a note saying he had a gun and left with an undisclosed amount of money, Amormino said. . . FBI Special Agent Chris Gicking, who said it’s believed to be the first time the suspect has ventured out of Orange County to commit a heist.

The more we see this guy, the more familiar he looks. In this photo, he’s not even trying to hide. Free money must be a hard habit to break either that or he just wanted to “go to 11.”

Billabong’s Code Red Teahupoo Online

by The Editors on April 25, 2012

Laurie Towner and Dylan Longbottom charged Teahupoo on the historic swell of August 27, 2011. Thanks to Network_A, Billabong’s entire Code Red (documenting the boys crazy day) is now online in it’s entirely.

The Billabong Pro Tahiti event on surfing’s World Tour was placed on hold due to a massive swell bearing down on the famed big-wave spot, Teahupoo. With forecasts calling for unprecedented surf, some of the greatest surfers in the world descended on the island to be in the water, despite a “Code Red” called by the Tahitian Coast Guard, which sought to keep everyone on shore.

We’ve watched all the footage we can from that day and it never seems to get old. How’s that spit?

Fabian Alomar Waits For Lightning

by The Editors on April 24, 2012

The premiere of the Danny Way movie Waiting for Lightning is already in the distant past, but we just saw this Red Carpet Interview video from The Skateboard Mag on SkateDaily.com and we have to say that Fabian Alomar a.k.a. Frank Hurts is the best on-camera interviewer in action sports and it’s no wonder he’s working in Hollywood. He is that good.

In this clip he interviews: Danny Way, Colin McKay, Rob Dyrdek, Ryan Sheckler, Jason Lee, Ken Block, WFL director Jake Rosenberg, Christian Hosoi, Peter Smolik, and Brandon Turner. Not a bad list.
