Ride Snowboards‘ neighborhood went downhill a little since last year at the SIA Snow Show. What had been a ghetto convenience store in 2010 became an “adult boutique” for 2011.
Condoms, lube, and other items crowded a display case at the front of the booth, while around the back were a couple strategically placed “private viewing booths” that offered “Live Shows” on the hour. Here’s a little piece of one of them. . .

While we were knee deep in the snowboard industry at the SIA Show in Denver the skate world was gathered in Jamie Thomas‘ back yard at Blackbox Distribution in Carlsbad, California.

Laguna Beach, California’s 210 AR4T Space is hosting an artist reception for their new show Cinema 15, curated by Ben Brough, on Thursday, February 3, 2011.
In a world full of action, adventure, horror and romance, the bizarre and sci-fi, we welcome you to the exit the normal and enter the act of fifteen artists who see cinema. . . . A dynamic new show featuring 15+ original works by 15 leading contemporary artists, a mixed bag of styles flow together to create a production of monumental proportions. The movie making process itself inspired Brough’s 15-head concept. “The creation of movies are made by a group coming together to form a whole production for our viewing pleasure,” he says. “Cinema 15 brings that group involvement together with a cast of emerging and established artists.”
The show features work by Steve Olson, Christian Jacobs, Gomez Bueno, Phillip Dvorak, Alex Weinstein, Thaddeus Strode, Craig “Skibs” Barker, Carl E. Smith, Jamie Heinrich, Ben Brough, Tyler Warren, Bad Otis Link, Sean Fahlen, Nick Simich, David Lloyd. In other words, this is going to be good. We haven’t seen Bad Otis in years!
The opening reception is on Thursday, February 3, 2011 from 6 to 9 PM. 210 AR4T Space is located at 210 North Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach, California.

Yep. Looks like you can’t stop the man in black. Shaun White proved once again that he is the greatest halfpipe rider in the history of snowboarding no matter what he wears. We were hoping for something a little more dramatic, but White looks good in black.
Scotty Lago jawed his way into second place with Louie Vito dancing into third.
We heard Kazu-san was underscored. On Twitter former X Games announcer Todd Richards said: “Come on? Kazu gets the shaft.”

Kelly Clark, who hasn’t won an X Games gold medal for years, did everything she had to do last night to win (including a monstrous backside 10 in her final run). As it’s been so going so far this year, no one else even had a chance.
“It’s been an incredible night. To have a victory lap like that and set it down at the X Games is amazing,” Clark said. “I’ve been working on that for a long time and I couldn’t think of a better place for it to come together.”
Local favorite Gretchen Bleiler slammed on her first run and then sat on her next two, seemingly never able to get that first one out of her head. Kaitlyn Farrington was second, Elena Hight was third, follow the jump for results.

Yesterday, January 28, 2011, while Skullcandy founder Rick Alden was busy bringing together some of the most authentic, pioneers in snowboarding (Chuck Barfoot, Terry Kidwell, and Kelly Jo Kelly) for a poster signing at the company’s SIA Snow Show booth, other execs were filing a Form S-1 with the SEC.
What had been simply rumor and speculation was now official: Skullcandy is going public.
When we tweeted the news, Alden seemed surprised that the word was out. “Who told you that,” he asked. We just shrugged.
According to a story on Reuters Alden and his crew plan to raise $125 million in an initial public offering.
The underwriters are being led by Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley. The shares are expected to trade on the Nasdaq under the symbol “SKUL.

Last night, Friday, January 28, 2010 Nike Snowboarding presented the Shoe Shine Show at the Summit Music Hall. It was a blend of music, art, and snowboard boots. Artists were commissioned to create original pieces inspired by musicians using Nike boots as their canvas.
The evening began with a set by artist/musician Matt Donahue and finished up late-night with the crowd surging to the techno beats of Diplo.

We didn’t get inside Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium in time to hear Mike Ranquet’s 2011 Transworld Riders’ Poll Legend Award speech or to see him pelted in a hailstorm of brightly colored silicone marital aids (but we heard it was epic and that his speech was littered with “moments of genius.”)

In its annual review of the top 100 Most Powerful Athletes, Businessweek has named Shaun White as number two right behind football player Payton Manning and just ahead of Tiger Woods. Why did they put him on the list:
With his fiery red locks and dorky attempts to look cool, Shaun White is the lovable face of both snowboarding and skateboarding. He dominated the halfpipe at the Olympics this year, proving once again that he is the world’s best snowboarder and an attractive athlete to brands that want to appeal to youth.
They estimate his annual earnings to be around $8.8 million. When compared to other athletes’ annual pay and sponsorship deals Mr. White seems like a bit of a novelty player on the Businessweek list, but that what snowboarding is to many people and what’s good for Shaun is good for snowboarding, right?
