Between The Lines With John Milius

by The Editors on March 9, 2009

Art.Milius.JpgApocalyspe Now screenwriter and Big Wednesday screenwriter and director John Milius narrates Scott Bass and Ty Ponder’s Vietnam/surf doco Between The Lines (which comes out on DVD on April 15, 2009) CNN spoke to Milius about movies, writing great lines, and most importantly surfing.

“One of the most poignant things of the film is how many California surfers went to Vietnam, and how many didn’t come back,” said Milius, 64, who learned to surf while growing up in Southern California. . . “One of the reasons I put surfing in ‘Apocalypse Now’ was because I always thought Vietnam was a California war.”

Said as only a Californian can.

Surfers Win Against Florida Dredging Plan

by The Editors on March 8, 2009

09Surf.Xlarge1.JpgA group of surfers, backed by the Surfrider Foundation, has stopped plans by the Town of Palm Beach, Florida that would have dredged sand for “beach nourishment” and potentially ruined the surf break at Reach 8, according to a story in the New York Times.

Like other critics of beach nourishment, the surfers and their allies argued that unless replacement sand is well matched to the beach, which is hard to do, the sand causes problems, interfering with nesting sea turtles and small animals like sand fleas that form the bottom of beach and marine food webs.

Can you imagine Palm Beach with sand that doesn’t match? Us neither. Congrats on the win.

Boardsport Source: How Not To Blog

by The Editors on March 8, 2009

BssportsWe were rolling through our online search this afternoon when we ran across a headline that looked awfully familiar on Boardsport Source, a European action sports business site. The headline said, More Fake Vans Seized. It was familiar because it was a story we ran a couple days ago titled More Fake Vans Seized In Manila.

Someone at Boardsport Source lifted the headline and the entire story from our site and posted it on theirs without even a link, a mention, or an attribution to our site or the website that originally posted the news story. Guess Boardsport Source doesn’t really understand the world of blogging. Hopefully, this will help them out: In blogging it it totally cool to quote a story, and attribute that content with links back to the original poster, but nothing is shadier that ripping off content with no links back.

Bleiler And Sheckler Lotion Up

by The Editors on March 8, 2009

Mission 2Snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler and skateboarder Ryan Sheckler have joined retired soccer player Mia Hamm, basketballer Steve Nash and others on the Mission Skincare team according to a story in the Detroit Free Press.

The athletes have all signed on as advisers to Mission Skincare, along with Serena Williams, Carmelo Anthony and golfer Sergio Garcia. They’re involved in development, testing and marketing products that suit their needs, and the brand has committed to make charitable donations to the athletes’ pet causes. . . . “I loved the idea of working with people who really wanted my feedback, from me traveling around the world, being outdoors — usually in zero-degree weather,” says Bleiler. She says she influenced the size, texture and taste of the Sweet Vanilla Lip Balmer, as well as the anti-sting element of the sunscreen.

Sweet Vanilla? Yummy. Ryan says he’s rockin’ Lip Balmer™ SPF 15, “so I can combat chapped lips.”

Take the money while you can this one won’t be around for long.

Meronek Unloads Big Heap Deck Data

by The Editors on March 8, 2009

Spot DataRob Meronek, the technical mind behind the Skatepark of Tampa website and online store, has just released a serious data drop on the SPoT site titled: A Detailed Analysis of Board Company Sales Over Six Years, according to his blog post on Clubmumble.

If you’re a skateboard bid’niss man, a numbers geek, or plain old skate nerd, you might find it interesting. If not, well, refer back to the post where Bob introduced me as a new member on the site – ha. This one is a listing of all the top selling board companies and a look at how they’ve performed over the last six years along with my notes/banter on each.

This is the sort of data people pay good money for, but Rob was nice enough to share it with the world for free.

Spare Change Opening At The Hibbleton Gallery

by The Editors on March 7, 2009

Sparechange 65

After all of these years of creating very public art and design Andy Jenkins (pictured right with Russ Pope) still gets nervous when people see his new work for the first time. “I get really self-conscious about my work,” he says. “Especially when my family says anything. If they walk into the studio and they don’t say anything and they’re I just looking over my shoulder I go, Ah, man, forget it. They have to say just the right think or I’ll throw the piece away.”
