Clay Marzo Changing Views On Aspergers

by The Editors on August 30, 2008

MarzoAs the star of Quiksilver’s new film Just Add Water, Clay Marzo is bringing more attention to a form of autism called Aspergers. It’s also opening eyes to just what is possible for others with the condition.

More than a movie about a rising young star, however, it details Clay’s aptitude and unique personality, and his life with Asperger’s syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder that can make school and social situations challenging but also allows him to hyperfocus and exhibit exceptional talent in a specific arena.

Clay’s mother Jill Marzo wasn’t sure the movie at first:

“I was really nervous,” she admits. “I didn’t want to expose it. I worried that people would treat him differently or that he would be embarrassed by it.” Instead, the film and an extensive article in Surfer Magazine yielded e-mails from others inspired by Clay’s unique pursuit of his passion. That, she says, made the journey worthwhile.

Quiksilver Worth Less Than Its Debt?

by The Editors on August 29, 2008

Quik LogoThe Orange County Business Journal has picked up the story about Quiksilver finding a buyer for Rossignol. Not much new in this story other than two interesting numbers:

Shares of Quiksilver were down nearly 4% near the close of trading Friday with a market value of $990 million.

And this one:

After fees, Quiksilver is expected to see about $100 million in proceeds from the sale, according to Kummetz. . . That stands to have a small impact on the company’s projected debt of $1.1 billion at the end of its fiscal year in October, the analyst said.

So, in layman’s terms: by the end of October Quiksilver will have more debt than market value to the tune of $110 million. We’re not analysts, but that doesn’t sound good.

Lennox Head Still Says No To Rip Curl

by The Editors on August 29, 2008

LennoxwebIn 2010 Rip Curl would like to hold a WCT surf event in Lennox Head, Australia where “the consistent right-hand point break is world renowned for quality, big wave,” according to a story on goldcoast.com.au.

Local surfer Ed Standfield established the North East Surfers Alliance early this year in a bid to ban corporate surfing events being hosted at Lennox Head. “We are being made out as grumpy old men who want the beach for ourselves but that isn’t the case,” he said. . . . “We have had over 700 signatures from local businesses and residents who do not want surf company Rip Curl to hold an international surfing event here in 2010. . . “Where they want to have the surf competition, at the point, is a nature reserve,” said Mr Standfield.

Looks like the local townsfolk don’t really care about a $2 million surf contest in their backyard. We can’t say we blame them.

by The Editors on August 29, 2008

Pam AndersonPamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s 12-year-old son Brandon Thomas (who seems like a really cool kid) got a little surf lesson at Bondi Beach yesterday while his mom is in Australia doing promo for her new show Pam: Girl On The Loose.

Must be nice to go surfing while your mom is out selling her wares.

It’s All Downhill at Maryhill

by The Editors on August 29, 2008

MerryhillIt’s a part of skateboarding that most of the industry and corporate media ignores, yet each year more and more people are joining the best downhill skateboarders in the world at the Columbia River Gorge on the world famous Maryhill Loops Road for the Merryhill Festival of Speed.

Since Wednesday, more than 200 athletes from more than 10 countries have been screaming down the 2.2-mile road, which is owned by the nearby Maryhill Museum of Art and only open for special events. . . . Those who are here are some of the top competitors in the world, such as Siegrist, a three-time world champ; and Canada’s Scott “Scoot” Smith and Kevin “K-Rimes” Reimer, who both have three-to-one odds to win the downhill skateboard race.

The Merryhill Museum, with its view of the Columbia River, is one of the most beautiful places on the planet and while the event also features inline skating and “gravity bikes” we won’t let that keep us from being stoked on the work that John Ozman and the Volcanic Promotions crew do on the whole event.

For daily coverage of the event check out Silverfish Longboarding.

Sal Masekela Is Just Incredible

by The Editors on August 28, 2008

Sal-1The Daily 10 host Debbie Matenopoulos was recently profiled in The Times of South Africa and in the interview she was asked what she thinks about her co-host Sal Masekela. Here’s what she had to say:

. . . he is one of the most incredible, soft-spoken guys she has met, qualities which come from the days when he toured with his father, Hugh Masekela, for whom she has tremendous respect. “We have a lot of fun and he’s talented,” said Matenopoulos.

Can’t say we’d argue with her over much of anything, especially Sal.

Oakley Athletes Rank #3 In Medal Count

by The Editors on August 28, 2008

Oakley LogoEach time there are an Olympics, Oakley sends out the press release saying exactly how many of the medals were won by their sponsored athletes. In Beijing it was 88. If Oakley would have been a country they would have lined up right behind the the USA and China, and just ahead of Russia who won 72 medals.

We couldn’t be more proud of the countless athletes from around the world that chose to use Oakley sunglasses as a critical piece of their performance equipment,” said Scott Bowers, senior vice president of global marketing and brand development, Oakley. “We developed High Definition Optics (HDO) to meet the demands of our athletes and there is no greater compliment than to see them earn their place among the world’s greatest.”

Actually, Scott, they weren’t “countless” as the same press release says “more than 600,” but either way, it was great coverage for the O.

Chomp-Chomp Number 18

by The Editors on August 28, 2008

This is getting really old, it’s starting to feel like logging pitbull bites in the Barrio. But Alexander Zgura, 26, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida was bitten (twice) by a shark as he sat “dangling his toes in the murky ocean.”

Zgura reportedly suffered two bites, with numerous lacerations, between his knee and ankle, but declined being transported to the nearest medical center, saying he would go by private vehicle.
