More Good Reviews For Surfwise

by The Editors on May 30, 2008

66137 AaThe Seattle Post-Intelligencer gives the Paskowitz surf documentary Surfwise a thumbs up.

In another time and place, Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz might have been acclaimed a great Jewish mystic. Twentieth-century America dismissed him as an irresponsible parent. Doug Pray’s funny and thought-provoking documentary reassesses the life of this nomadic surfer, who packed his wife and nine kids into a 24-foot camper for a lifetime odyssey that made them the most well-known family in surfing history.

We still haven’t seen this.

UK O’Neill Distributor Fires Director

by The Editors on May 30, 2008

After some “accounting irregularities” were discovered Darren Spurling, the managing director of Blacks Leisure‘s Sandcity division (sole distributor of O’Neill clothing in the UK) was fired.

Spurling had been suspended since March, when Blacks announced that Sandcity’s profits had been overstated by £1m in the last financial year and a further £1m since then. He leaves without a payoff. It is understood that the police are not involved. “There’s no suggestion of fraud and no cash left the business,” said a spokesman.

MTV NBC AST ASAP

by The Editors on May 30, 2008

653-Mediumthumb-Mtv MedIt’s like someone spilled the Scrabble tiles, but what is means is that MTV is going jump in and try to feast on the carrion of the NBC AST Dew Tour. Action sports TV never looks so, well packaged.

As part of the MTV Networks/NBC Universal alliance around the AST, MTV and MTV2 will provide lifestyle programming, targeted cross-promotion, multi- platform content and distribution, consumer products licensing and merchandising to the joint venture. NBC Sports will continue to produce extensive competition coverage of the AST tours and provide live network broadcasts and on-air promotion around AST competitions.

Ramp that celebrity shit up. We need some viewers. Though no one has said it better than Kilwag at Skate and Annoy. Follow the jump for the whole press release.

Shaun White Snowboarding Dropping

by The Editors on May 29, 2008

White

We all knew it was on the way, but gamers are getting sneak peaks at the new Ubisoft video game Shaun White Snowboarding. It’s supposed to launch in time for holiday 2008. The blogs aren’t all stoked, however. Kotaku said:

Ubisoft’s Shaun White seems to have plenty going for it, but nothing that made me think “Wow, this is incredibly different.” The game, heading to the Playstation 3, Wii and Xbox 360, uses the Assassin’s Creed engine and features an open mountain for gamers to explore.

For those of us who snowboard, it sounds pretty good. Especially since Shaun wrote the games entire script himself. Click the link for a video tease of the game.

Powdr Hits Mt. Bachelor Reset Button

by The Editors on May 22, 2008

We’ve never been impressed with the on-hill facilities at Oregon’s Mt. Bachelor resort and it looks like we’re not alone. Powdr Corp. the company that owns Bachelor recently fired Matt Janney, GM; Carly Carmichael, director of marketing; Mark Perry, the food and beverage director; and Ernie Pool, director of operations.

The mountain needs to find more creative ways to handle recurrent issues with maintenance and weather-related shutdowns and communicate those challenges with the public, said Herwig Demschar, chief operating officer for Park City, Utah-based Powdr Corp., which owns Mt. Bachelor.

We’re certain of one thing: Mt. Bachelor can’t get worse.

Bows, Arrows And. . . Skateboards

by The Editors on May 22, 2008

257-Skate-ShopOnly in Greenville, Tennessee. Seriously. Sherry and Michael Melton have opened a bow-hunting and skateboard shop in their hometown called Flipside.

According to Melton, the shop will sell brand-name skateboards such as Baker, Flip, Alien Workshop, and Plan B, and parts such as decks, trucks, wheels and bearings. . . . Flipside will also sell archery equipment . . . Explaining the store’s name, Mrs. Melton said the dictionary definition of flipside is “an opposite” so she decided that archery was an opposite of skating. The shop will sell various archery items and tree stands used by hunters.

This may be the best shop in the world for people who like wounding deer with arrows and then skating a bowl.

The Ultimate 3D IMAX Movie

by The Editors on May 21, 2008

Ultimatewaveposter01 250Px
Kelly Slater will be featured in a new 3D IMAX film from The Stephen Low Corporation and Quiksilver. Titled, The Ultimate Wave” features a tried and true format for certain:

Ultimate Wave is directed by award-winning giant-screen filmmaker Stephen Low and features eight-time world champion Kelly Slater at the helm of a surf expedition, exploring the globe to find and ride the ultimate wave. An accomplished athlete, surf explorer and devout student of the natural world Slater’s fascination and engagement with the ocean will provide audiences with a remarkable portal into the world of the wave.

Looks like this may make hunting down an IMAX theater worthwhile. The film is set to launch in the fall of 2009.

Da Hui Fights For Fashion

by The Editors on May 16, 2008

15Surfing.2-1Da Hui in the Fashion & Style section of the New York Times. Read the story of Fast Eddy and da boys, one more time. This time from a fashion industry angle.

With annual sales of roughly $2 million, the privately held Da Hui is a flyspeck in comparison with mass-market behemoths like Billabong or Quiksilver. But the appeal of the label — now sold at surf shops in 19 states and 12 countries — is that its black boardshorts and no-frills logos both bypass the sport’s floral sartorial clichés and also, for those in the know, summon up a hard-core, roots surfer image of riders like those Da Hui underwrites.
