Re-ranking The Power Ranker

by The Editors on June 1, 2009

Stab Lewis

Australia’s Stab magazine interviewed two of what they called Postsurf.com’s Lewis Samuels‘ “favorite targets” about how it feels to be berated in the Power Rankings. Here’s a little of what Phil Macdonald and Drew Courtney had to say:
Phil Macdonald:

Why would I care what some twerp, who just wants to be controversial, has to say? I’d love for him to say some of the shit he writes to my face. I wouldn’t hit him. I might word him up, but then again I don’t really care. Why would I invest energy into hating some dork, two-faced prick who writes shit for the sake of being controversial?

Drew Courtney:

It doesn’t bother me one little bit. But I heard a few of the Hawaiian guys are hunting around for him. I would love for him to show his face at one of the contests, instead of just watch ‘em on the web cast. I’d love to meet him face to face. It wouldn’t go real good.

Turns out Lewis did meet Drew face to face: or did he not? Click here to see how it went.

Street Dreams Or Skate Nightmares?

by The Editors on May 28, 2009

Guess we’re going to have to wait until June 12, 2009 to see how this whole Street Dreams thing plays out, though it is kind of funny to see a bunch of skate celebs playing themselves in a “fictionalized” Flashdance world of skaters trying to make it while still staying true to their art. Until then, here is another trailer.

Source Interlink vs. The Tax Man

by The Editors on May 27, 2009

Source-InterlinkjpgSurfer, Skateboarder, and Snowboarder magazines’ parent company Source Interlink’s plans to reorganize under Chapter 11 bankruptcy have run afoul of the IRS according to a story on Foliomag.com.

The Internal Revenue Service has filed an objection to Source Interlink’s plan of reorganization, claiming the magazine publisher and distributor owes more than $10 million in unpaid taxes. . . The objection, filed last week in Delaware’s U.S. Bankruptcy Court, said Source’s reorganization plan cannot be confirmed because it does not ensure adequate payment of the IRS’ tax claims. The IRS said Source and its affiliates have not filed a “staggering” number of federal tax returns.

What does it mean when you can’t even get your bankruptcy plans confirmed?

Pipeline Books Getting Unloaded

by The Editors on May 27, 2009

Ep Cover.JpgJust got a tweet from @americandiction with a rather strange offer from the San Diego, California based CasaGrande Press.

Looking to sell 1,800 copies of a surf book about pipeline at 90% off, anyone interested in an opportunity buy? http://www.experiencepipeline.com/

Apparently Quinn Haber’s “coin-toss book” Experience Pipeline isn’t moving as well as the publishers would like. At 90% off the whole run would be about $2,500. Any takers?

Before making an offer it would probably be a good idea to watch this video . . .

Our favorite Quinn quote: “I wrote this book and I’ve been reading it for about two years now and I still come across new plots, new endings, new situations. . . ” Really?

The Skateboard Reformation

by The Editors on May 27, 2009

Former vert skateboarder Pete Davidson apparently believes that the skateboarding industry should put away childish things and grow up. Not that we disagree with him, but has he seen the Dew Tour and the X Games? How much cleaner/blander does he want it?

Guess we’ll have to read Reforming A Counter Culture: The Flaws and Fallacies of the Skateboarding Industry and How to Fix Them to find out.

Surf Print Loves Them Some Nike

by The Editors on May 27, 2009

Hurley is pretty excited about the coverage they got recently from “the print mags.”

Because as much media we now consume in this ever-exploding digital age, a cover shot still trumps it all. . . There’s something about the permanence of a cover. How it will sit on coffee tables and stocked in library shelves for decades to come. How — no matter what happens — it can never be deleted, “crash” or be taken back. . . .The Hurley team still knows the value of a good cover shot, which is why they worked extra hard this spring and hit the jackpot: gracing the front page of the four major American surf magazines in one month.

Gee, wonder how that could all happen in one month?

Another Zen And The Art Of Surfing Book

by The Editors on May 21, 2009

20090520 21Surfer1 Gallery.JpgJaimal Yogis, the 29-year-old author of Saltwater Buddha: A Surfer’s Quest to Find Zen on the Sea had planned to write his book on his girlfriend’s father’s 30-foot sailboat docked in Sausalito, California, but he ran into a little sewage problem according to a story in the Marin Independent Journal.

I thought that would be romantic and somehow Zen-like. But after a few months, the holding tank, no matter how many times I emptied it, reeked of sewage. And the little bed, the one tucked into the bow, the one I compared to ‘being in the womb,’ was right next to the holding tank; so, obviously, it no longer lulled me to sleep. It just smelled. I guess even the prettiest things eventually end up stinking.”

Hopefully, that is not the case with his book, something that Surf Nation author Alex Wade says has “cult classic stamped all over it.” We haven’t read Saltwater Buddha yet, but are looking forward to Yogis summer book tour. For all the dates click here.

Bonnier Buys Even More Magazines

by The Editors on May 19, 2009

Bonnier-Corp-LogoBonnier Corporation, the parent company of Transworld Media has reportedly just picked up five print magazines from Hachette Filipacchi Media, according to a story on Media Post. The titles include: American Photo, Popular Photography, Boating, Flying and Sound & Vision.

In 2008, according to the Publisher’s Information Bureau, American Photo saw ad pages declined 9.4%, Boating 25%, Flying 5% and Sound & Vision 14% (Popular Photography was flat in 2008 compared to 2007). So far in 2009, according to MIN Online, ad pages have fallen 49% at Boating, 17% at Flying and 32% at Sound & Vision, and 15.5% at Popular Photography. (No figures were available for American Photo.)

It seems to fly in the face of all logic, but they must have some kind of plan, right? Maybe someone should remind them that it’s very difficult to build a navy out of sinking ships no matter how many you buy. . .
