Last month we mentioned that along with being one of the best surfers of all time Tom Curren can also sing. . . well. Here’s the proof in the video for Summerland Road. Though we are kind of wondering where his duet partner is. She pretty much makes the song and yet is conspicuously missing from the video. Hmmmm?

According to a story on All Things D Google’s YouTube is about ready to “pull the plug” on 60 percent of its channel programming deals, you remember, all that money that was given to channels like Network A, Tony Hawk’s Ride Channel, Red Bull Media House etc. . .
This week, Google’s video site will start offering new contracts to some of the channel programmers/creators it signed up in the last year. But not all of them: YouTube figures it will end up re-investing in up to 40 percent of its original channels by the time the renewal process is done. . . YouTube will handle renewals in batches, starting with the first set of channels that launched in January of this year.
If we go by Adage.com’s weekly ranking of the YouTube Channels and guess that Google is going to save save their top performing channels and lose the bottom, then it would appear that number 17 ranked Ride Channel might just make the cut. But then, we have no idea how Google with sort this out. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Whenever we hear that a former pro surfer has a “new album” coming out we automatically begin cringing. With the exception of Donovan Frankenreiter (and we admit to cringing a little at the start) the road most surfing troubadours walk is not paved with critical acclaim or booming success.
Into this milieu drops three-time world surfing champion Tom Curren (right). His debut EP Summerland Road goes on sale October 16, 2012.
Still one of the most well known, beloved and legendary of professional surfers, Curren has a mystique that was enhanced by his musical aspirations and abilities. During his years on competitive surf circuit, Curren always found opportunities to create and perform music, developing bands with names such as Skipping Urchins and Plankten. His sound reveals musical influences ranging from jazz to African music to acoustic guitar melodies, reflections of a world-traveling competitor. His diverse repertoire made such an impression on Jackson Browne that he asked Curren to join his touring band last year.
If the bluesy smooth title track is any indication, the Summerland Road EP is set to push him right in there on the successful side (a positive mention in Vanity Fair can’t hurt). For the official word follow the jump. [click to continue…]
