Glen E. Friedman Wins Vs. Mr. Brainwash

by The Editors on June 13, 2011

Friedmanvsbrain

Legendary skateboard and music photographer Glen E. Friedman won a summary judgement last week in his copyright infringement lawsuit against Mr. Brainwash a.k.a. Thierry Guetta (star of the Banksy film Exit Through The Gift Shop), according to a story on The Hollywood Reporter. Friedman had sued Guetta because the “street artist” used Friedman’s iconic photo of Run D.M.C., (seen above in original and Mr. Brainwash version via Boing Boing) without permission. The judge seemed pretty logical on this one:

“To permit one artist the right to use without consequence the original creative and copyrighted work of another artist simply because that artist wished to create an alternative work would eviscerate any protection by the Copyright Act,” concludes Judge Pregerson. “Without such protection, artists would lack the ability to control the reproduction and public display of their work and, by extension, to justly benefit from their original creative work.”

Word. Now, all that is reportedly left is for the courts to decide how much Glen can recoup in damages. We’re guessing it will be quite a lot.

Blackbird Blackbird’s Skateboarding Views

by The Editors on June 7, 2011

For the video for their song Pure, San Francisco, California based Blackbird Blackbird brought in director Eli Stonberg who created some amazingly different views of skateboarding in the rain: sometimes 10 views at once, according to a story on Mashable.com.

“I wanted to create an anatomical study of a skateboarder’s motions,” says Stonberg. “When a skater attempts a trick, we usually think of their front foot doing most of the work. It slides and kicks violently to make the board spin or ollie. I was interested in what the other body parts were doing at that same moment.”

What Stonberg created is both beautiful and oddly instructive. Check it out.

Nixon & Beastie Boys Going Public (Radio)

by The Editors on June 2, 2011

Nxn Beaties All

Nixon has teamed up with the Beastie Boys for a new limited edition line of Swatches watches with some of the proceeds going to benefit WKCR-FM, Columbia University’s non-commercial student-run radio station.

Four watches were created for the collection and are available in red, white, green and blue. The watches come in a maritime themed package, which is unlike anything the Nixon line has ever seen before, and feature an image of Mike D along with a special message from him on both the watchband and case. As lifelong lovers of everything skate, snow and surf, not to mention style icons in their own right, it is fitting for Nixon to have MCA, Ad Rock and Mike D create a unique interpretation of Nixon’s Time Teller watch. Due to the limited nature of this collection, once these watches are sold out, they are gone forever.

Beastie Boys, nautical flavor, and a cause all mixed into one? Now that’s marketing. Follow the jump for more watchy details. [click to continue…]

Henry Rollins On Skateboarding & Kids Today

by The Editors on February 17, 2011

Rollinspromo07-00795The Hydrilla’s Cullen Poythress interviews Henry Rollins on the topics of skateboarding, punk rock, the Internet, and kids today. For those old enough to have seen Black Flag play in the summer of 1982, or those young enough to wonder, this is a great interview. Read it and smile.

The youth have been satiated. They have ipads, ipods, iphones, and everything is a point and a click away. The format that used to raise the parents’ ire, it being music or whatever, it’s all kind of okay now. The Internet gives you a great deal of access and a great deal of privacy. You can view your online porn and you can make your own porn with your girlfriend and post it to the delight of all your class mates. There’s not a lot of people saying, “No”, at this point.

Can’t really argue with anything but the privacy thing. Click the link and read the rest.

The Sounds Of Mammoth Opening Weekend

by The Editors on November 8, 2010

Thesounds Mam

With two feet of fresh snow in the last 24 hours it looks like Mammoth Mountain is going to have a real winter opening when they fire up the lifts for the first time this year on Thursday, November 11, 2010. But the mountain doesn’t want everyone to just come up for opening day. No, they’d like us all to stay all weekend. And to make it more enticing they’ve hooked up Maja Ivarsson and The Sounds to play Canyon Lodge on Saturday night (following the premiere of the Unbound Terrain Park movie Another Day In Paradise).

Follow the jump for all the details.

Things Get Cosmic At The Creek

by The Editors on October 28, 2010

Cosmiccreek 2010Billabong is rallying most their brands in support of their 10th annual retro-surfing contest at Dana Point, California’s Salt Creek (how did Nixon get out of this one?) held October 30 – 31, 2010.

Cosmic Creek features a surfing contest with all manner of strange categories including Space Cadets, Groove Masters, Rocket Men, and Rolling Stones and a Saturday night performance by Billabong’s spooky troubador Donavon Frankensteiner at Laguna’s hip club Seven Degrees. They’re encouraging everyone to dress appropriately for the night-before-Halloween bash.

Oh, wait. Our mistake. It’s actually Donavon Frankenreiter who will be performing. Sorry for the confusion.

For more information click the link directly below this or follow the jump to view Donavon’s latest music video Glow made up entirely of still photos shot by master lensman Brian Bielmann.
