There’s nothing like trying to ram a pair of shades into a small pocket. Worry no more thanks to Spy’s new John John Florence Fold. Here’s what Spy says:

We don’t know who is really to blame for the global, viral spread of Anastasia Ashley’s butt cheeks Supergirl warm up routine, but we do have questions. Are these just the antics of a serious surfer girl who doesn’t care? Is this the calculated creation of a marketing wizard who knows exactly how to twerk it? Is obese America this hard up for toned ass? Occasionally, there are no answers.

The streets of downtown Huntington Beach, California got a little out of control Sunday night (July 28, 2013) after the conclusion of the Vans US Open of Surfing. It seems some suburban SoCal kids were upset at a row of porta potties and they released some of their middle class rage by knocking them over.
According to a story in the LA Times eight people were arrested in a “riot” which reportedly started when someone threw a ketchup bottle into the street from an upstairs restaurant.
Eight people were arrested and several officers were injured Sunday night. Police in riot gear used tear gas and nonlethal rounds to disperse the crowd, which tipped over portable toilets and smashed storefront windows.
While “windows” plural is reportedly a bit of a stretch there was some damage to a few newspaper racks, signs, and at least one car window. It’s hard to really “riot” when you’ve got one hand on your cellphone and you’re trying to get it all on instagram.

After a week of marginal surf the 2013 Vans US Open of Surfing wrapped up with Alejo Muniz and Kolohe Andino (two of the lightest guys on tour) battling it out for the title. But Muniz got the upper hand early in the tiny surf and took it 16.23 to Andino’s 14.54.
“I’m so happy, I can’t believe it,” Muniz said. “Today marks the four-year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing and I’d like to dedicate this win to him. This is the biggest win of my career and it’s the biggest crowd I’ve ever surfed in front of. I knew I had to get scores and the waves were dying a little bit with the high tide and the ocean really cooperated with me today.”

After wading through a week of less the spectacular surf the Vans US Open of Surfing got a little boost this morning (Friday 26, 2013) with the occasional four footer. Kelly Slater is already out in the round of 24 (thanks Michel Bourez) but Jadson Andre and Julian Wilson are still in there. More action is on the way. Last September man about the surf Dan Malloy (and friends Kanoa Zimmerman and Kellen Keene) rode his bicycle down the California coast to check things out at a slower pace, catch some surf, and of course, create another Malloy multimedia masterpiece.
In this instance the creation is a book titled Fast Is Slow and a short film called Moving Pictures. Dan is spending August 2013 touring California with the book and film and you can check all three of them out if you’re in the area. Wetsuit developers SAMS (Shark Attack Mitigation Systems) have created some wetsuits that mess with sharks heads, but not in a bad way, according to a story in the Daily Mail. Apparently, sharks use their sense of smell to find prey, however, they use their eyes just before they chomp down.
The Diverter wetsuit has navy and white stripes that are seen on some poisonous animals and fish to make the shark think they diver is dangerous. . . The designers have also created matching surfboard stickers. . . According to SAMS, years of anecdotal evidence suggests that a stripe pattern acts as a deterrent or repellent to sharks.
Not looking like something that sharks want to eat is always a good thing.

SurfAid, the organization that is dedicated to improving the health, well-being and self-reliance of people living in isolated surf zones is holding their second annual SurfAid Cup at Malibu, California on Saturday, September 7, 2013 and there’s still time for you to round up a team and complete. The catch? All you have to do is help raise at least $5,000 and you’re in surfing the Bu with a pack of friends (and your favorite pro surfer, maybe even Joel Tudor pictured above).
Teams aim to raise at least $5,000 for SurfAid and, in order of their fundraising total, each team picks a pro/legend surfer to join them, for a total of five surfers per team. The teams then compete in one-hour heats, with four teams battling out the final. An Expression Session will also be held at Malibu on Friday 6th September as a warm-up for the competitors. . . ASP world tour surfers Travis Logie and Courtney Conlogue and former world longboard champions Joel Tudor and Jen Smith have confirmed they will compete this year.

Seems there is always someone who believes that what the world really needs right now is an action sports theme park. This time around it’s Josh Kearney, a 34-year-old Australian. According to a story on Vegas Inc,. Kearney wants to create a park “right off the Las Vegas strip” that will features motocross, wakeboarding, surfing, and snowboarding.
“Vegas Extreme will stand as a new model for amusement parks around the world,” Kearney said. “Its focus is on an exploding generation of sporting events and recreation that push the boundaries of human movement.” . . .The amusement park would include a white sand beach for sunbathing and cabanas fashioned out of repurposed shipping containers. A 7-acre lake would offer jet skiing, whitewater rafting and wakeboarding. A cable system would allow up to 10 riders to zip around the lake at once. . . During winter, the lake could be drained and filled with snow. The resulting “ski bowl” could be used for snowboarding.
So what’s left before this year’s version of the Gotcha Glacier or New Jersey’s Xanadu becomes a reality? Well, $50 million for one, and then Kearney will also need a piece of property to build it on. In other words, this isn’t even a project yet. But we wish Kearney the best anyway. Would be cool if one of these finally got built somewhere in North America.

After all that hoopla about the “sexist” Roxy Pro edit and the “butch lesbo” facebook response, reportedly from Quiksilver’s Chad Wells, event organizers have now cancelled the Roxy Pro Biarritz for a complete lack of waves.
“It’s been a challenging week surf wise, but the world’s best female surfers have still enjoyed themselves in the beautiful town of Biarritz,” Jessi Miley-Dyer, ASP Women’s World Tour Manager, said. “While we’re disappointed that the swell never manifested for this year’s event, we’re very pleased to announce that Roxy have committed to rescheduling the event to run in conjunction with the Quiksilver Pro France men’s event in late September. This will allow the 2013 ASP Women’s World Title race as well as the requalification campaigns of the world’s best female surfers to continue in the best possible fashion.”
The Roxy Pro will now be held in with the men’s Quiksilver Pro France in Hossegor, which is scheduled for September 24 – 30, 2013. For the official word from the ASP, follow the jump
