Heading into the final day of the 2017 ISA World Surfing Games in Biarritz, France, the ISA has announced that the host country Team France has made history and won their first-ever Team World Championship in the competition.
Team France got off to a spectacular start with Pauline Ado and Johanne Defay finishing with Gold and Silver in the Women’s Division earlier this week, and now Jeremy Flores and Joan Duru have advanced to the Men’s Semifinals on Sunday. With these results, no other team is in a position to reach France’s point totals.
We were saddened to learn this weekend that John Severson, the founder of Surfer Magazine, Wind Surf Magazine, and inventor of so much that we now take for granted in action sports died peacefully in his sleep at home on Maui on Friday May 26, 2017, according to a Drew Kampion story on Surfline.com. He was 83.
Before John Severson, there was really no surf art, no surf magazines, no real surf films, no surfwear industry, no pro surfing, no Surfrider Foundation, no surf culture as we know it. In a very large sense, he made it all happen by synthesizing the sport of surfing into various expressions of his art. “I always daydreamed real big,” Severson admits. “I was the guy who stood up there and just nailed them over the fence and pitched no-hitters and ran for touchdowns — I could just daydream the biggest dreams.”
We have Severson to personally thank for creating the style of photo driven magazines that made us love media in the first place. He will be missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Kelly Slater reportedly just snapped up another house on the North Shore. This $7.8 million gem is located in Haliewa, according to a story in the Pacific Business News.
The 7-bedroom, 5-bathroom estate is located at 61-785 Papailoa Road, and includes one building and pool situated on 23,889-square feet of land. The ocean-front land was last purchased in 2000 for $1.85 million, and the property was built in 2001.
Five Orange County, California and three Austrailian surfers are suing Rip Curl after the 8 were allegedly left to fend for themselves after the charter surf boat they were on (the Quest 1, formerly known as the Indies Trader II) began sinking during the night of July 18, 2015, according to a story in the Orange County Register.
The eight men are now suing surf giant Rip Curl, which organized the excursion, alleging the company knew the vessel was in disrepair and failed to provide any aid or assistance after they were rescued. The lawsuit, filed last month, also names Rip Curl executives and the boat’s operators, PT Neptune Adventures, which is described in the suit as a “shell” company set up by Rip Curl to “avoid liability and circumvent regulatory compliance” for the Quest 1.

The Newport Beach Film Festival will be hosting the world premiere of Opper Films’ Secrets of Desert Point, a film that documents the discovery, evolution and exploitation of a legendary surf break in remote Indonesia almost 40 years ago. Here’s the pitch:
In the early eighties, while sailing off remote Lombok Island in Indonesia, young California surfer Bill Heick and his friends (dubbed the “Golden Beards”) stumbled across the perfect wave…a pristine barreling left reeling endlessly and empty over a shallow, live-coral reef. As treacherous as it was beautiful, it was later dubbed “Desert Point” for its dry forbidding nature. In the years that followed, a pioneer crew of hardcore surfers set up a makeshift beach outpost and kept their treasure off the surf-media map for almost a decade. Their mission: to surf uncrowded Desert Point at the highest level possible…no matter the cost. . . But Paradise, they quickly found, came at a price.
