For actress AnnaSophia Robb to play Bethany Hamilton post shark attack in the new bio-pic Soul Surfer she had to lose her left arm. In the movies they do that with a little cover up, according to a story on Radaronline.com.
Robb wears a green sleeve over her arm that will be digitally erased for the final product to reflect Hamilton’s disability. . . Robb 16, and Lorraine Nicholson, 19, both clad in bikinis, knocked out sets of crunches in between takes.
This movie may turn out better than we thought.

According to ActionWatch December 2009 comps in core shops were up over October and November, but closed out the quarter 13 percent down, according to a post on Transworld Business.
This number gives the fourth quarter first prize in lowest sales declines of the year for the shops on the panel, but by a very small margin,” said Cary Allington. “Also, Q4 2009 had the “easiest” comparison of the year since that quarter was so bad in 2008, so we were actually expecting (or at least hoping) for an even smaller comparative sales decline.”
So that means it’s not getting worse, worse. It’s getting better worse. And that’s good.

When Australian surfer Ashley Ramage heard his son Damon yell, “Dad!” while the two were out sufing at Archie’s Beach (near Bundaberg, Queensland) he knew something was up, according to a story in the News Mail.
“The way he said it, I just new something was wrong,” Mr Ramage said. . . “I turned around to look at him and saw this big grey shape and a fin come out of the water at me.” . . Mr Ramage said what he believes was a silky shark smashed into the back of his surfboard. . . “I was pretty lucky to get a warning. Damon yelling gave me enough time to lift my feet out of the water,” he said.
Luckily, neither surfer was injured in the attack. One more reminder that it’s always good to have a wingman.

In a filing today with the SEC among the list of purposes for Quiksilver’s next shareholders meeting (March 26, 2010) was item number three (directly following a proposal to increase the number of authorized shares of common stock by 100 million):
3. To consider and vote upon a proposal to approve the grant of 3,000,000 shares of our restricted common stock to Kelly Slater as part of his sponsorship agreement;
Getting Kelly Slater to buy-in on the future of the company is a pretty good idea, actually. Few things are more motivating than the idea that you could make $20 million (or more) in the next couple years if Quik’s stock ever climbs up out of the dumps. Nice thinking.

Like vultures feeding on the pop music dead it seems the super-groups just keep coming. This time it’s Midnight Oil’s Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey and bass player Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes who are kicking off a psycho ’surf rock band’ called The Break, according to a story on Beatcave.
The foursome releases its debut album, Church Of The Open Sky, on April 16th via the Bombora label. . . The band’s official website already features a new song, “Cylinders,” which they describe as having “maximum surf and twang, sturm and drang.” The song is actually the first single and will be available Feb. 9 via iTunes. . . With 15 tracks, each named after legendary surf breaks, the music is definitely exciting, a nice blend of surf-guitar rock, but with a modern twist – maybe even a hint of the Oils in there as well.
Sounds a little like Devo’s p-twang band The Wipeouters to us, but it’s all good.

Seems everyone just got back from a SIMA Surf Summit, but that’s not stopping anyone from getting back on track. This year’s Surf Summit, scheduled for May 12-15, 2010, will be for both surf manufacturers and retailers (if there are any left).
This year the annual Surf Summit conference will be taken to the next level by unifying the SIMA and BRA conferences into one event that will truly encompass and showcase the entire surf industry. With a larger manufacturer and retailer presence and a stronger representation of the industry’s top leaders, Surf Summit 13 will be a more complete union of the tribe. . . “Surf Summit can only be made better by including the Board Retailers Association members and staff,” said Doug Palladini, SIMA President and VP of Marketing for Vans. “I’m really pleased that the BRA leadership agrees in all the mutually beneficial gains that can be generated by combining our forces for this important leadership event going forward.”

Gregory Gladstone, 38, was found floating by his board near the Newport Pier in Newport Beach, California on Saturday January 23, 2010 and was later pronounced dead at Hoag Hospital. Officials still don’t know exactly what happened, according to the OC Register.
Lifeguards were alerted to an unattended surfboard and a possible missing surfer at about 9:50 a.m., said Jennifer Schulz, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Fire Department. Lifeguards originally reported the victim unconscious after they found him floating near the surfboard.
The coroners office said an autopsy will be done. According to the story Gladstone was a “longtime Newport surfer” who had two young children.
