The Bra Boys Go Reality TV Route

by The Editors on March 24, 2010

Sunny Abberton has the Bra Boys family industry running in the reality TV direction if reports on News.com.au are to be trusted.

HAVING conquered the big screen with their super successful self-titled documentary, the Bra Boys are now on the cusp of consolidating an offer for a reality-TV series. . . Word on the beach is the show will be a “fly-on-the-wall” look at the lives of the notorious Maroubra siblings, and may even see pin-up of the surfing gang Koby Abberton return to school.

Sunny and Koby are apparently looking for a way to show their “more humorous side.” This should be good.

O’Neill Goes Greening With Mishka

by The Editors on March 23, 2010

Mzi.Tghahcbw.170X170-75O’Neill is rolling out their latest green, eco-marketing project called ECO’Neill (get it?) with help from “soulful roots-reggae artist and waterman, Mishka.”

Mishka will be giving audiences a preview of the collection during his album tour starting this week, and will be contributing to the creative process and design of upcoming ECO’Neill styles. Later this year, he will be featured in related advertising, POP, mobile marketing and social media efforts from O’Neill to support the introduction of ECO’Neill t-shirts, tanks, beanies and boardshorts hitting stores next Spring.

The ECO’Neill line will feature “100 percent organic” T-shirts and boardshorts made from “recycled plastic bottles.” Because when we buy throw-away logo T-shirts that use our bodies as billboards we’re confident knowing organic cotton farmers are getting paid.

Stab Yanks Magazine Off Newsstands

by The Editors on March 22, 2010

Smith FanningStories of Stab Magazine and racism are fast becoming cliché. In the most recent episode Mick Fanning’s lawyers asked Stab to pull their January/February issue off newsstands due to a few culturally problematic quotes from the current world champ.

The issue features a Charlie Smith story titled Tales of a Fucking Jew in which Fanning is reportedly quoted making similarly anti-semitic comments directed at Smith (pictured left) in December 2009 at a Rip Curl party celebrating Mick’s 2010 ASP world title win.

According to a story in The Australian Stab publisher Sam McIntosh has complied with the request and the issue is no longer available.

He said Stab had acceded to a request from Fanning’s lawyers to pull the issue from newsstands, but not for legal reasons. . . He said the decision was motivated by a desire to maintain good relations with the surfer and only after Fanning had expressed contrition. . . He denied the assertion that as Fanning’s sponsor, Rip Curl, was also an advertiser with the magazine, this had influenced the withdrawal of the issue.

Times are tough enough for print magazines without pulling newsstand issues and being forced into refunding all those advertising dollars. Sounds like some bad decisions all around.

Shetler & Morrissey Win Ultimate Boarder

by The Editors on March 21, 2010

Cochamp-Jc

From the placings in the Ultimate Boarder events it appeared to be a six way tie between Chad Shetler, Mike Morrissey, Kristian Philips, Bryce Young, and Aaron Astorga but after some tie-breaking and taking “highest placing” into account the win was split between last year’s winner Chad Shetler and Mike Morrisey. They both scored a first, a thirteenth, and a twenty-second in the three events and ended up splitting the $30,000 prize purse.

“It’s an honor to share the stage with Mike and compete alongside these other highly talented athletes,” said Chad Shetler. “I was humbled to win the event last year and it means a lot being able to repeat my performance.”

Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins, the only girl in the contest, finished in 23rd place a head of 25 guys. Not back. Click here for a snow photo gallery or follow the jump for more info and complete results. . .

Parko’s Theatre of Pain

by The Editors on March 19, 2010

Parko Pain

Stab Mag goes through all the gory details that lead to Joel Parkinson losing the 2010 ASP World Title to Mick Fanning. And it all started one day in Bali. Watch the air reverse that injured the tour leader over and over and over in still photos, video, and slow-mo video. Oddly, if he had bailed it Parko may very well have the World Champ. Ah, hindsight. . .

Ashley & Bleiler Spice Things Up

by The Editors on March 18, 2010

Gretchen BAnastasia-Ashley-Picture-1Anastasia Ashley and Gretchen Bleiler will be helping two “adventure-seeking guys. . . perform an itinerary of tasks designed to K.O. the B.O. with Old Spice,” according to a post on WalletPop.

The guys, chosens as part of Old Spice’s Fresh Collection Intern Challenge, will split up and spend four days with either Ashley in Fiji or Bleiler in Zermatt, Switzerland. There they will do silly stunts to promote Old Spice like this:

Don traditional Swiss lederhosen and tear up the mountain while snowboarding some of the world’s best snow. Attach 10 Velcro-padded sticks of Old Spice Matterhorn to the Lederhosen suspenders and hand out to 5 other skiers and snowboarders on the mountain – while yelling out “You smell like Matterhorn!!” – at the same time. Use your helmet cam (provided by Old Spice) to capture video of you in action – and reaction shots.

In Fiji Ashley will apparently hook the boy up with a lesson on how to blow a conch shell. We’ll just leave it at that.

Sharks Seen Circling Missing Man’s Body

by The Editors on March 11, 2010

StoryA missing California man, Sam Zhoum, 35 of the San Francisco Bay Area, who rented a surfboard and paddled out at Laniakea on the North Shore of Oahu only to disappear in three to six foot surf was encouraged to take a surf lesson by a surf shop employee but declined, according to a story on KHON 2 TV. Now, the story has gotten even worse.

Around 7:30 Wednesday morning a fire search helicopter made a gruesome discovery about a mile and a half from Laniakea. . . “They saw a body off shore Papailoa Point about a quarter mile off, and they also saw sharks, three large Tiger Sharks exhibiting aggressive behavior and shortly after they were no longer able to see the body,” said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig.

The man, reportedly from the San Francisco Bay area was in his 30s.

[Update 2:25 PM: “This morning, a resident walking on Papailoa Point Beach found a pair of ragged black shorts. Police identified the shorts as belonging to Zhoum.” Hawaii News Now. Sounds like one of those tigers must have coughed them up.

Swami’s Surf Contest Clears First Hurdle

by The Editors on March 11, 2010

082909 23The city council in Encinitas, California has decided that it will open the world famous Swami’s for a potential contest even though the locals are all bitter on the idea, according to story in the San Deigo Union-Tribune.

The council voted 3-2 to allow world-renowned surfer Linda Benson to seek a city permit to hold her four-day women’s longboarding championship at Swami’s in October, as the Parks and Recreation Commission recommended. . . Mayor Dan Dalager, Councilman James Bond and Vice Mayor Maggie Houlihan said the city’s permit process will determine whether Benson’s contest can work at that beach. . . “That’s what the process is about,” Dalager said. “It may not get through the process, or it may.”

Maybe this will finally open the door for a Rip Curl Search event in the future. . .
