Surfers in Puerto Rico for the Rip Curl Pro Search paddled out today in memory of Andy Irons and have postponed the event until Friday morning “to give the ASP professional surfers the space they needed to clear their heads, get their arms around each other and just take it all in,” according to Neil Ridgway, Rip Curl Global Marketing & Advertising Chairman.
Kelly Slater had this to say about the day:
“We had a nice paddle out for Andy,’ Slater said. “It was a huge a group of people that got together – a couple hundred people paddled out. Obviously everyone is very somber and it’s just devastating news for everyone.”
“Everyone had their own connection with Andy on so many different levels,” Slater said. “He was a classic guy. Although he and I butted heads a lot a few years ago, I have so many good memories of Andy and we have become pretty good friends since. Generally, we just sit around and don’t even talk about surfing. We just have dinner and talk.”
“We’re just baffled that he’s gone.”

Reports of Andy Iron’s untimely death began circulating via text message and phone calls a little after 1 PM today (Tuesday, November 2, 2010). The 32-year-old three-time ASP World Surfing champion reportedly succumbed to fever during a layover in Dallas, Texas on his way home to Hawaii. He was found in his room by Grand Hyatt Hotel employees at 9:44 AM, according to the Associated Press.
Irons was in Puerto Rico to compete in the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico but reportedly was ill on arrival and was too sick to surf his round one heat 8 against Luke Stedman and Owen Wright.

Brixton will be celebrating the release of the Brixton x Deus Motorcycles collaboration Thursday, November 11th, Thalia Surf Shop in Laguna Beach, California.
The night will kick off at 7pm here at the shop for giveaways, raffles, and vintage bikes on display along with all of the Brixton x Deus hats and apparel. At 9pm we’ll then be moving the party down the street to Laguna’s oldest bar in town, The Marine Room [21+], where we’ll be hosting the rest of the night with live music by Becky Lee & Drunkfoot, Yuma Territorial Prison Guard, and Thalia Surf’s own DJ Burnout.
Retro fashion greasers rejoice.

Mary Mills interviews Derek Hynd for Liquid Salt Mag and asks the finless innovator who he thinks is “shaping the path for surfing today.” His response:
Can’t say anyone is as individuals. The corporation shapes surfing. The corporation pays for performance. The corporation pushes the message. The corporation wins over those who buy the line. Any one who surfs for themselves, rides boards from their own space, distances themselves from as much bullshit as is possible is doing a beautiful job.

By edging Melanie Bartels in the quarter finals of the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico, Stephanie Gilmore clinched her fourth consecutive ASP Women’s World Title today (November 1, 2010) and becomes the first surfer ever to win a world title for every year on tour. And by edging Carissa Moore in the final Stephie added another win to season.
“I’m really at a loss for words right now,” Gilmore said. “Mel (Bartels) is one of the most dangerous surfers in the world and has had my number on several occasions. Even on that last wave there, I was certain she’d got the score. I was blown away when they called it out and I’m rapt right now.” . . . “I guess I haven’t really been thinking about that,” Gilmore said. “But to hold a record that Layne (Beachley) or even Kelly (Slater) never got is pretty special. I never thought I would even win two, consecutive titles so to win four is a massive achievement for me.”
With the men’s round three heats off for the day, Kelly Slater will have to wait to test his title-grabbing hopes. Follow the jump for the rest of the women’s event details.

For those, like us, who are completely consumed with news of the battle between Kelly Slater and Jordy Smith for the 2010 ASP World Title here’s where we stand after the second day of the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico. Both Kelly and Jordy advanced on Saturday into round three and didn’t have to surf today (October 31, 2010). Tomorrow (if the contest runs) Kelly Slater will face local wildcard ripper Dylan Graves (who took out Ace Buchan today) in what may be one of the most important heats of the year. Following that, Jordy Smith faces Nike 6.0 Trestles champ Gabe Kling. Tough heats. If Jordy loses and Kelly wins it’s pretty much number 10 time.

According to a story from the Associated Press, videographer Sebastian Carvallo was showing surf videos to other guests at Macaroni Surf Resort when the 7.7 earthquake hit. Two minutes later he heard a distant roar.
The Chilean surfer grabbed his computer and his camera, rounded up the other guests and rushed to the highest spot they could find: the third floor of the thatch-roofed beach resort. . . From that vantage point overlooking the lagoon, Carvallo and the others had a terrifying front-row seat Monday night as three towering waves of a tsunami struck, shaking the building so violently they thought it would collapse.
They are lucky to have survived. So many others did not.

ASP world number two Jordy Smith isn’t letting a little ankle injury keep him out of the hunt for his first world title as the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico waiting period opens tomorrow. But he has a pretty big wall to climb to get around Kelly Slater. Here’s the logic Jordy is facing:
For Slater to clinch his historic 10th ASP Crown at the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico, the following scenarios must occur:
– If Slater finishes Equal 3rd or better, he clinches the 2010 ASP World Title.
– If Slater finishes Equal 5th or Equal 9th, Smith must win the event to send the ASP World Title Race to Hawaii.
– If Slater finishes Equal 13th or Equal 25th, Smith must finish Equal 3rd or better to send the ASP World Title Race to Hawaii.
– Essentially, if Smith fails to finish higher than Equal 5th, Slater claims the 2010 ASP World Title.
Jordy Smith (ZAF), 22, current ASP World No. 2, is the only surfer standing in the Floridian’s way, but the prodigious natural-footer is guarded when discussing his aspirations in Puerto Rico.
