Haggling over the Mavericks big wave contest is continuing even though there was no contest this year, according to a story in the San Jose Mercury News.
Sponsor Barracuda Networks decided to pull out of the event even though they had reportedly agreed to a three-year deal.
“Barracuda Networks has decided to redirect our efforts and attention to other projects. We wish everyone involved in the event in the future the very best,” company Executive Vice President Michael Perone said in a statement. Barracuda had agreed to a three-year sponsorship deal for the contest with the surfers, but no contracts were signed. Surfable winter waves never materialized this year, so the contest was called off.
Jay Moriarity’s family has also requested that his name be removed from the contest going forward.
Everybody seems to be making money off Jay’s name,” said Doug Moriarity, Jay’s father. “It sounds like it’s just becoming a big business again — Barracuda was saying the surfers can’t run it, they don’t have the experience.”
What would you expect from a company named after a “voracious, opportunistic predator that relies on surprise and short bursts of speed to overtake their prey.” Sounds like it’s time to screw the prize money and take the whole thing back underground.

ASP women’s world tour number 9, Jacqueline Silva of Brazil was involved in a head-on collision at 7 AM this morning (April 19, 2011) on her way to the Rip Curl Pro Bell’s Beach event, according to a story on ASP World Tour site. The Geelong Advertiser reports the following:
It’s believed Silva was driving towards Torquay from Geelong when a car travelling in the other direction swerved into her path causing a head-on crash. . . Police believe the driver of the other vehicle, a 42-year-old Torquay man, suffered “some kind of medical condition and blacked out”.
Apparently the crash happened on the Surf Coast Highway in front of the Torquay Police department. Silva was taken to Geelong Hospital where she will reportedly be under observation for 12 hours. So far it appears that Silva is planning on making her round 1 heat against Carissa Moore. We wish her a speedy recovery.

How stacked is that line up?
The event, which will commence at Seaside Reef on April 22-23, 2011, will also include a Super Hero’s themed charity golf tournament at The Crossing at Carlsbad on Monday, April 18, 2011. . . “The Rob Machado Seaside Pro Junior presented by Hurley and Reef is the only Pro Junior event in San Diego and represents the third of eight events on the men’s ASP North America Pro Junior Series,” said ASP Regional Media Officer, Bobby Shadley. “The surfers competing on the regional series are looking to finish within the top four on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series ratings in order to earn a berth on to the ASP World Junior Tour for 2011.”

After what seemed like a horrendously long break the ASP Elite Tour is back on with the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.
The waiting period begins Tuesday, April 19, 2011 (this afternoon PST) and according to Coastalwatch there appears to be a new three to four foot swell arriving Wednesday (Tuesday afternoon PST). With waves building through Friday.
Ke11y Slater is apparently on the hunt for a little more than a record fifth Bells title. “If I wasn’t hungry to win an 11th ASP World Title, then I wouldn’t be here,” Slater said during a press conference.

Radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant is reportedly making its way out into the Pacific Ocean and could be headed to a surf spot near you, according to a story on The Intel Hub. This model created by ASR Limited on April 5, 2011 shows just how it might move on out.
Record levels of Japan nuclear radiation have been found in the Pacific Ocean off the Fukushima, Japan Coast. The radiation is expected carried toward the US by fast-moving currents.
Or, maybe the gigantic floating island of plastic out in the middle of the ocean can suck some of it up for us. That would be good, huh?

Western Australia’s West Suits was forced to “call in administrators” when a rough economy got in the way of continued sales growth according to a story in The West.
The O’Connor-based business, which generated about $6 million in total sales last year, has secured debts owed to National Australia Bank of about $1 million. . . Up to a further $1 million is also owed to several trade creditors, and an unnamed private investor is understood to have advanced the company several million dollars.
According to the story, administrator Dino Travaglini, from Perth firm Moore Stephens says “it would be business as usual while he sourced a buyer for the company.”
Being the little guy has never been easy.

Former pro skateboarder Chad Shetler won his third consecutive Ultimate Boarder Championship on Saturday, April 9, 2011 by finishing fourth in the skateboarding event. Snowboarders Trevor Jacob and Shayne Pospisil finished second and third. Shelter was able to win the event without placing top three in any of the event.
“ I am incredibly stoked to have come out on top, especially since this was the toughest year of competition yet in terms of the high caliber of athletes and the rough elements,” said Shetler. . . “Overall it was a pretty amazing week, and getting to miss work to go snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding, is definitely something you can’t beat,” added Shetler who has a full time job in the marketing department at LOST, an action sports company based in Orange County.
Other finishers of note included Tosh Townend in 5th, Aaron Astorga in 11th, Chas Guldemond in 12th, and Kalani David in 16th. Follow the jump for full results. [click to continue…]

Writer Chas Smith apparently nosed around on theinertia.com a.k.a. “The Planet’s Largest Network of Thinking Surfers” and has a few thoughts on surfers who like to think they are thinking, according to story on Stab Mag.
Thinking surfers have shitty haircuts and wear lousy clothes. Thinking surfers are dogmatic about pointless contrivance. Thinking surfers can and do write endlessly about minutia. Thinking surfers are zealots. Thinking surfers are Leninists. Thinking surfers are out of touch. Thinking surfers are old both mentally and physically. . . Thinking surfers are the exact sorts of people that flourish underneath the fluorescent lighting and prepared bedside meal deliveries and incontinence and visiting hours of nursing homes. They are the exact sorts of people that flourish when nobody, except for people exactly like them, is listening. How fun! How the best kind!

On what was probably the worst day to go surfing this spring competitors in the Ultimate Boarder Championships weather the storm at Cardiff, California’s Seaside Reef to complete stage two of the boardsports triathlon.
Surfer Nathan Zoller won the solo surf event, but his 27th place in snow relegated him to 9th place over all. With a 10th place finish snowboarder Shayne Pospisil cemented his lead in the overall competition. Go snow!
Todd Richards, who did not surf, is currently in last position in the overall. Stage three continues on Saturday with skateboarding in the Seaside Reef parking lot. Event starts at 10 AM. Bring chairs. Follow the jump for full results. [click to continue…]
