Surfing
The Newport Beach, California City Council voted unanimously last night (May 10, 2011) to approve a zoning change that would allow iconic 50-year-old surf shop The Frog House to remain in its current location, according to a story in the Daily Pilot.
By unanimously approving a zoning change for the store’s West Newport property, the council caused cheers from the crowd. . . “I’m stoked,” shop owner T.K. Brimer said after the vote. “The city has treated us very well at every step.”
Dealing with City Hall is never easy. It is good see things working out well this time.

From the looks of the waves today (and the promise of a swell) the Billabong Pro Rio will probably start on May 11, 2011 at 4 AM PST (7 AM EST) on the first day of the waiting period. Kelly Slater is ready for Rio, apparently:
“I have a lot of good memories from competing in Rio,” Slater said. “The last year that I was here was the year Peterson Rosa won, and if he didn’t win I wouldn’t have won the World Title that year. I was here once or twice in the 90’s and I’ve had good times. One year we had good waves and good barrels and I have a lot of good friends here and it’s been a long time since I’ve been back.”

Mark Occhilupo joins snowboarder Louie “Tiny Dancer” Vito as the second third boardrider (we forgot Layne Beachley) to appear on a version of Dancing With The Stars. Occy’s first go didn’t go so well. As one judge said:
“You’re not just a goofy-footed surfer, you’re a really goofy footed dancer . . .I’ll be clear––it was the worst routine we’ve had in 11 series. You had no concept of partnering Jade, you were out of time, your steps were wrong. It was just truly awful. . . stick to surfing.”
While it obviously takes serious sack to get out and dance on TV, we’ll just put it this way after round one: Snowboarders: 1, Surfers 0.

Learning to read has never been so rad, thanks to Lisa Pliscou and illustrator Tom Dunne’s new book Dude: Fun with Dude and Betty published by Harper Collins. Publisher’s Weekly says:
Pliscou mimes the sincere voice and meticulous punctuation of an easy reader (“See Dude surf. Whoa! Look at Dude surf. Surf, Dude, surf”). Her humor arises from unexpected vocabulary (“Stokaboka!”), paired with earnest illustrations of Dude hanging 10, wiping out, and visiting a taco stand for a “bodacious burrito”—things Dick and Jane never dreamed of.
The book is aimed at kids four to eight, but it looks like Dude would be good on any coffee table. Click here to buy it.

Tanner Gudauskas had a great run at Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro at Trestles this week, however, it all ended by six hundredths of a point in his final match up with Brazilian Miguel Pupo on Saturday, May 7, 2011.
“Miguel ripped and it makes it exciting when it’s a close Final,” Gudauskas said. “Congratulations to him, it’s been a fun week. . . This week has just been classic,” Gudauskas said. “It has been a blur. I am just coming off of an ankle injury and wasn’t expecting anything and I just started making heats and then I was in the final.”

It’s hardly news to say that Kolohe Andino, 17, is doing well at the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro at Trestles. He was built for this wave, especially when the sets are rolling through in their rglassy, rampy two-to-four foot range. And that’s exactly what rolled through when he edged Dusty Payne 17.50 to 17.03 in Heat 4 of the Round of 24 on Thursday, May 5, 2011.
“Before the heat my nerves were running wild,” Andino said. “I had to step aside and focus because I was pretty nervous. Once the heat starts I start to get a little more comfortable, but actually after I got that 7, I was still nervous because I knew Dusty (Payne) could get a bomb and rip it. I just want to give credit to Dusty (Payne) he’s one of my favorite surfers and it’s a bummer we came up against each other and I probably had the best heat of my life.”
Andino was not alone. Brazil’s Gabriel Medina, 17, rolled on with his big-name wrecking by snubbing Patrick Gudauskas with a 9.5 and the highest score of the day. Sally Fitzgibbons‘ short winning streak ended in the semi-finlas of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic at Dee Why, New South Wales, Australia today (Friday, May 6, 2011) when she fell to Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich. She also got bumped back down to number two on the ASP World Rankings list after Carissa Moore was able to defeat Mulanovich in the finals. Sally says she’s trying not to ignore all that.
“I’m trying to not think about the World Title too much, I know that there are a lot of girls within range, so I’m just going to keep my head down and have fun.”
Moore on the other hand was pretty fired up about her performance.
“I’m really, really happy, I’ve been fired up ever since the last two events with Sally (Fitzgibbons) and I’m just super excited I was able to come out on top this time,” Moore said. . . “I was really excited to make another final and it was refreshing to have a Sofia as an opponent,” Moore said. “She was leading for most of the heat and I was kind of nervous out there.”

Organizers of the Nike 6.0 Lower Pro announced today that for the first time ever, the event will be carried live on Time Warner Cable in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Hawaii.
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro and ASP 5-Star Oakley Pro Junior will be shown in their in entirety from May 3rd through 7th through a live feed to Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s SURF Channel 250 and 1250HD in Hawaii from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm PST each day. From May 3rd to May 6th Oceanic Time Warner Cable will replay each day’s action after the live portion ends, and it will loop until competition resumes the following day. After the contest finishes on May 7th, Oceanic will replay the entire five-day event on a loop until May 13th. . . Additionally, the Oceanic Time Warner Cable live feed will be transported to Time Warner Cable’s Los Angeles, San Diego and Desert Cities markets.
And that’s great news for people who still have cable, because the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro webcast has been almost unwatchable thanks to incessant stalling and/or dropped connections every 10 seconds.

Bobby Martinez kicked down his ASP elite power and garnered the day’s highest score, Kelly Slater was a no-show, and Dane Reynolds got back into the competition mood by surfing in his first heat since having knee surgery. And it all went down in surprisingly fun looking one-three foot surf on day one of the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro.
“Nothing’s easy these days, there are all kinds of good surfers,” Martinez said. “That one 9 was just a good wave. I think I did four turns or something. I really just lined up nice.”
Reynolds, freshly into a new six-year contract with Quiksilver allegedly worth $23 million, squeezed by a hard-charging Conner Coffin with less than a point to secure an advance into the next round behind Kekoa Bacalso. Reynolds’ knee didn’t appear to hold him back, but he did mention that he would like take some precautions. “I think I’m going to have to go ice it up,” he said as he exited the water following his heat.
