After Tiago Pires defeated Josh Kerr in the opening heat of today’s foreshortened running of the 2011 Quiksilver Pro France we lost focus. We were saddened to see John John Florence out by .12 of a point to Alejo Muniz, but the rest of the heats really move us one way or another. We still don’t understand why organizers when with 35 minutes heats in the first place, but turns out it didn’t really matter as the wind blew things out by noon anyway.

We’ll admit it. Along with the rest of the Americas we slept through the first 10 heats of the Quiksilver Pro France last night. We tried to stay awake, but that damn Ken Burns/ Peter Coyote joint Prohibition knocked us out like a bottle of bad ‘shine. While we were snoozing, however, things got done. All the majors (except Joel Parkinson) made it out of their first round heats. Dane Reynolds lost to Owen Wright in Round 1, surprising no one.
When Round two kicked off, Parko lost to Morocco’s super grom Ramzi Boukhiam, Jeremy Flores slipped by Marc Lacomare in the French Revolution heat, and surprise of all surprises ol’ Neckbeard smoked Adriano de Souza in Round 2 Heat 3 to stay in the game.
We feared Reynolds would be out of the contest on day one, but he started blasting airs and immediately reminded everyone that he still is a force to be reckoned when he actually shows up. Hopefully nothing happens between now and Round three, because, regardless of the heckling, we do enjoy watching Dane rip the big water folds.

Not to beat any dead horses, but four-time ASP World Surfing Champion Stephanie Gilmore is also in the ESPN The Magazine Body Issue naked. And while we hate to play favorites, Stephie wins this round. But now we’re done. We promise. . .Then on second thought, Stephie better not stay out in the sun too long or she’s likely to get a rosy hodge.

While we still don’t believe we’ve ever seen anyone under 45 using an iPad in the wild (fie to you obnoxious moms using iPads to snap photos of your kids at the beach), apparently Vans has. Why else would they put the time and effort into creating their new Off the Wall TV iPad app? Here’s what they say about it:
Off the Wall TV iPad app, delivers Vans’ offthewall.tv video network of exclusive, original action sports, music, art and street culture programming to millions of iPad users around the world. . . [users are] now able to enjoy offthewall.tv anywhere with the easy to use app.
The app (which is free in the iTunes store) features all the content from the offthewall.tv website. So, the next time you’re over at you aunt’s house, grab her iPad and load this thing up. It’s probably pretty cool. Not that we’d know.

The 2011 Quiksilver Pro France got off to a lay day start earlier today thanks to little to know contestable waves, but that doesn’t mean Dane Reynolds is off the hook just yet. No. Officials say there should be waves arriving soon.
“As expected, we don’t have much on offer this morning and have called a lay day today,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge said. “We’re expecting an increase over the next several days and will reassess conditions for a possible start tomorrow morning.”
Lucky for Reynolds he gets to face Owen Wright in Round 1, Heat 5. How’s that for a welcome back? But we’re guessing the “nude beaches and wine” will make up for that. Follow the jump for the full Round 1 heat match-ups. [click to continue…]

Dane Reynolds may have dropped out of every event on the 2011 ASP World Tour, but that doesn’t mean he has stopped surfing entirely. As evidenced by this new “sperm whale” edit shot by Michael Kew last week in Ventura County, California surfing’s $23 million man can and does still ride waves.

For the past week surfers in San Diego have been treated to waves that light-up at night thanks to Lingulodinium polyedrum aka red tide. Loghan Call and Jonathan Keena from Mansbestmedia.com have done an amazing job of capturing the glow with this edit. It’s still nothing close to paddling out and seeing if for yourself, but it will help you understand (be sure to click it fullscreen).

Surfer Magazine has created an amazingly beautiful infographic overview of stats leading into the ASP Dream Tour’s stop in France. Here’s what they’re saying:

Longtime surf scribe Drew Kampion has written an apparently commissioned biography of O’Neill wetsuit founder Jack O’Neill titled (not suprisingly) Jack O’Neill: It’s Always Warm on the Inside. The book is being published in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the iconic Santa Cruz brand.
